Sunday marks the final day of major golf in 2023 with the Open Championship coming to a close.

The majors calendar began with two familiar champions in Jon Rahm and Brooks Koepka, only for Wyndham Clark to come in and capture his first major victory at the U.S. Open. Is Brian Harman set to follow up Clark's win with another underdog success story?

Harman is a longtime PGA Tour golfer, but serious contention in majors has been rare for the 36-year-old. After avoiding mistakes better than anyone else on the course over the first three days at Royal Liverpool, he has a chance at a career-defining moment on Sunday.

Here's a closer look at Harman's history in majors, from a close call at the U.S. Open to recent struggles.

Has Brian Harman won a major?

Harman has not won a major, so he has the chance to become this year's second first-time major champion.

Harman competed in 28 majors before this year's Open Championship, the first being the 2012 U.S. Open. To this point, he only has two top-10 finishes to show for his efforts. That's poised to change on Sunday in Hoylake, England, whether or not he holds on for the win.

What is Brian Harman's best finish in a major?

Harman's best finish in a major came at the 2017 U.S. Open, when he finished tied for second behind Brooks Koepka. Harman held the 54-hole lead in the tournament, but Koepka ultimately won by four strokes.

The second-highest finish of Harman's major career came at the Open Championship last year, when he finished sixth. Harman is in line for a third consecutive top-20 finish at the Open Championship.

While Harman has risen into the top 30 of the Official World Golf Ranking, he hasn't played like someone who was on the verge of a breakthrough on one of the sport's biggest stages. He didn't make the cut at the Masters or the PGA Championship in the spring and finished 43rd at the U.S. Open in June.

Nevertheless, Harman has been the steadiest player on the course through 54 holes at the Open Championship, to the point that even a mistake or two might not cost him the Claret Jug on Sunday.

Harman posted three top-20 finishes in 2021 and gained momentum at the end of 2022 with a top-six finish at the Open Championship, but he missed the cut at both the Masters and the PGA Championship this year.

Despite not having any PGA Tour wins since 2017 and a mixed track record in majors, Harman came out of the gate looking dominant at Royal Liverpool and has sustained his play into the weekend. A win on Sunday would be the undisputed highlight of his under-the-radar career.
