The next, best Star-Spangled hope for F1 has arrived.
The United States has long been short on quality Formula 1 drivers, with Mario Andretti the last driver with American citizenship to take home a grand prix victory, coming in 1978. Safe to say, it's been a long time.
Logan Sargeant hopes to break the streak in the coming months and years. Joining Williams in late 2022, Sargeant made his Formula 1 debut in 2023 for the storied F1 team, and represents the United States' best — and only — opportunity to put some respect on U.S. drivers in the pinnacle of motorsport.

Who is Logan Sargeant?
Logan Sargeant grew up racing in South Florida, before his family moved to Lugano, Switzerland, when he was 12 years old. The move came to help support Logan and his brother Dalton's racing desires.
Logan Sargeant had extensive racing experience prior to joining the Williams Driving Academy in 2021. He raced in the Formula 4 UAE championship, the Formula 4 British championship, Formula 3 and Formula 2 circuits.
Sargeant was without a super license, which is required to be an F1 driver, as he lacked the necessary points when Williams selected him to be one of their two drivers in November 2022. He finished the last race of the F2 season in fifth, securing the requisite points needed for a super license, earning his spot with Williams in the process.
Unlike some of his contemporaries on the track, Sargeant doesn't have a Formula 3 or 2 championship. In total, he had three F3 race wins and two F2 race wins. He did finish fourth in the F2 world championship in 2022..
By his own admission, he does not watch Netflix's F1 hit "Drive to Survive."

How old is Logan Sargeant?
Born on New Year's Eve in 2000, Sargeant is one of the youngest drivers on the grid at 22 years old, with only McLaren's Oscar Piastri younger than him.

Where is Logan Sargeant from?
Sargeant was born in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., which is roughly a half hour north along the coast of Miami. When he was 12, his family moved to Switzerland.
On the racing side, Fort Lauderdale is also the home of IndyCar great Hélio Castroneves, the winner of the Indy 500 in 2001, 2002, 2009 and 2021. He's also a four-time runner-up for the IndyCar driver's championship in 2002, 2008, 2013 and 2014.
Anthony Rizzo (MLB), Scottie Pippen (NBA), Chris Evert (tennis), and Joey and Nick Bosa (NFL) were also born in Fort Lauderdale.

The last American F1 grand prix winner is none other than the great Mario Andretti. Andretti won the 1978 F1 driver's championship for Lotus.
Andretti still holds the last race win in his championship-winning season, at the 1978 Dutch Grand Prix.
Alexander Rossi is the last American driver to race in F1, driving for Caterham F1 and Marrusia F1, most recently in 2015.
History of American Formula 1 drivers
While not American-born, Mario Andretti holds American citizenship, by proxy making him the greatest American F1 driver in the circuit's history. Most drivers to race in F1 under the American flag raced during the birth of Formula 1, which was founded in 1950.
Andretti won the 1978 F1 driver's championship for Lotus. He's also the last American to win a grand prix, coming in 1978 at the Dutch Grand Prix.
