That's all for tonight folks, we hope you enjoyed the game. Stay tuned on Goal for reaction, editorials and analysis!

Spain will be disappointed to drop two points from a winning position after battling back. They showed resilience after a difficult week, battling back twice from behind before taking the lead. David de Gea will look back at his error with regret, while there was nothing he could do about the other two strikes from Ronaldo. Two of the titans of the tournament have put forward a fine show. Now let's see what the rest of the elite have in store for us.

Cristiano Ronaldo Portugal Spain 2018

WHAT A GAME! The contest ends all square, but it had almost everything. Cristiano Ronaldo will take the headlines and rightfully so. He was sensational this evening, notching his 51st career hat-trick. His goals initially put his side in front in the first half, scoring a penalty and then a drive from outside of the box. Spain rallied twice through Diego Costa before Nacho put them ahead with a stunning strike. However, in the dying minutes of the match Ronaldo delivered for his team, scoring a sublime effort from a free-kick to snatch a vital point. It could be crucial for both teams come the end of the group stage.

FULL-TIME: PORTUGAL 3-3 SPAIN

90+4 mins: Isco has space on the right flank, but his cross is blocked by Guerreiro. Both teams look jaded out there.

90+3 mins: Ronaldo is on the deck and is stretching out his legs. It appears to be a cramp issue for the Portugal captain.

90+2 mins: BLOCK! Quaresma collects on the left and surges into the box past two challenges. He is just about to pull the trigger, but the tackle comes from Pique to stop the strike. A crucial challenge.

90 mins: Ronaldo has scored his 51st career hat-trick (club and country), and his treble was also the 51st hat-trick scored in World Cup history.

89 mins: What a game! There's still time left for a winner. Ronaldo couldn't notch a fourth goal, could he?

88 mins: GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!! RONALDO!!!!! 3-3!! IT'S BRILLIANT!!!! Ronaldo completes his hat-trick with a sensational effort from the free-kick. It appeared to close to go over the wall, but he found a way. He lifted his effort over top of the leaping figures of Ramos and Pique. The ball had enough curl and dip to find the top corner, leaving De Gea with no chance. What a performance from the Portugal captain.

86 mins: Silva's tiring legs are replaced by Vazquez late in the game for Spain. Pique fouls Ronaldo on the edge of the box. The referee awards a free-kick to Portugal, which Ronaldo will take.

85 mins: Spain search for the goal to kill off the game. Aspas and Thiago combine in the final third, but the former's pass just evades the run of David Silva in the box.

83 mins: Frustration gets the better of Ronaldo as he throws the ball to Alba for a Spain throw-in with too much velocity. It was not appreciated by the full-back.

82 mins: Aspas breaks into space in the final third, but he scuffs his left-footed strike straight at Patricio

80 mins: Andre Silva comes on for Guedes in attack. Can the AC Milan man conjure a goal for his team here?

79 mins: Soares sends the ball over the top for the run of Ronaldo. It's a foot race between him and De Gea to the ball, although Pique and Ramos close in. The ball deflects off the keeper from Ronaldo's boot, but Quaresma controls with his hand as he tries to capitalise on the rebound.

77 mins: Aspas comes on to replace a tiring Costa. Spain need fresh legs in attack to see out the win.

Nacho, Portugal - Spain, World Cup 06152018

76 mins: OVER! Quaresma tries an effort out of nothing from the edge of the box. He catches the ball on the outside of his right boot, but it sails comfortably over the bar.

75 mins: Thiago turns away from Moutinho in the middle of the park and slides a pass into the feet of Costa. Spain attempt to build down the left as Alba comes forward in support, but Portugal are able to see off the threat.

74 mins: Spain are controlling the pace of the game and are keeping the Portugal attack from open play at arm's length.

72 mins: Moutinho lifts a dangerous delivery towards the back post and Fonte climbs to head at goal. He cannot quite get the direction, although Ronaldo tries to keep the attack alive. However, Spain are able to see off the threat.

71 mins: WIDE! Alba surges down the left and cuts the ball back for Costa in the middle. He does not make clean contact on his left foot, pulling his strike wide of the post.

70 mins: Iniesta does not quite have the legs that he used to. Thiago replaces him in the middle of the park.

69 mins: More changes for both teams coming up. Bernardo Silva is withdrawn for Quaresma as Santos looks for width in the closing stages.

68 mins: Bruno Fernandes makes way for Portugal, as Santos puts Joao Mario into the mix, as they're in need of a goal.

66 mins: Bernardo Silva surges forward into the right inside channel before he loses his footing at the vital moment. Better from Portugal, although they need to up the ante.

65 mins: Nacho's goal was Spain's first from outside the box in a World Cup game since 2010.

63 mins: Ramos clears the danger for Spain from the set-piece and Isco brings the ball into the Portugal half before being fouled. Momentum has completely shifted towards La Roja in the second half.

62 mins: Bruno Fernandes has space to lift a cross into the box, but he fails to pick out Bernardo Silva or Guedes, much to the frustration of the two attackers. Portugal still have a corner.

61 mins: Guerreiro takes the free-kick, but he fails to beat the first man with his delivery. Portugal need someone other than Ronaldo to come to the fore here.

Diego Costa Spain Portugal World Cup 2018

60 mins: Nacho pulls back Ronaldo on the charge and the Portugal captain insists that the full-back should be booked. It's only a free-kick for Santos' men.

58 mins: GOALLLLLLLL!!!! SPAIN TAKE THE LEAD!!! NACHO SCORES A STUNNER 3-2!!!!! Hierro's men have completed the turnaround as Portugal fail to clear their lines on the edge of the box. Nacho seizes on the loose ball and drills an effort at goal on the half-volley. He catches it crisply and it flies towards the target, striking the inside of the post before nestling into the bottom corner. What a comeback from Spain in the second half.

56 mins: Costa has scored with his first two shots on target at the World Cup.

55 mins: GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!! COSTA EQUALISES AGAIN 2-2!!! Spain are back on level terms for the second time in the match as Costa strikes from close range. David Silva's neat free-kick picked out the run of Busquets at the back post and he headed the ball across the face of goal. Costa was the first man react to turn it home into the net. Game on.

53 mins: Iniesta is tripped by Moutinho in the middle of the park. The quick feet of Iniesta got the better of the Monaco midfielder on that occasion.

52 mins: Spain build with patience in the Portugal half to wait for their moment to break forward, but the backline holds firm for Santos' men to see off the threat.

50 mins: WIDE! Bruno Fernandes attempts to put De Gea under pressure to start the half with a strike from distance, but his effort goes harmlessly past the post.

49 mins: Guerreiro make a move forward down the left to latch on to Carvalho's offload, but he cannot pick out Guedes in the box as Ramos makes the interception.

47 mins: Spain have kept a clean sheet in just two of their 15 opening games at a World Cup tournament (in 1990 and 2006).

46 mins: The second half is underway!

The two teams are making their way back out on to the pitch ahead of the start of the second half. Will we see more goals in this game?

Spain were in control of the match when Ronaldo notched his second goal. Andres Iniesta and Isco both had opportunities, but could not force their side in front. You cannot account for individual errors at the World Cup. Unfortunately for De Gea, he joins a list of high-profile players to stumble on the big stage. For his sake, Spain have to rally once again in the second half to get back into the game.

What a half of football. The games earlier in the day had brief moments of drama, but nothing quite on this scale. Cristiano Ronaldo has come out firing to start the tournament. He drew the foul from his club team-mate Nacho to win a penalty, which he then converted to hand his team a dream start to the match. Spain responded to the adversity with a fine strike from Diego Costa to open his World Cup account. However, a horrendous error from David de Gea handed Portugal the lead once again, with Ronaldo notching his second.

HALF-TIME: PORTUGAL 2-1 SPAIN

45 mins: There will be one minute of added time.

44 mins: GOALLLLLLLLLLL!!!!! RONALDO SCORES 2-1!!!! A HORROR SHOW FOR DE GEA!!! Portugal regain the lead on the stroke of half-time as Ronaldo's strike squirms through the legs of De Gea into the net. It was a shot out of nothing from the edge of the box after Guedes teed up his captain for the strike. His effort was a low and hit with power, but it should have been a comfortable save for the Manchester United keeper. De Gea allowed it through him and Portugal have the lead.

42 mins: SAVE! Silva flicks the ball into the path of Isco on the edge of the box. He carves out space for a left-footed strike, but Patricio gets his body behind it to make the save.

41 mins: Portugal are doing their utmost to slow the tempo of the game, which suits their style rather than the brisk pace that Spain have been operating at during the last 20 minutes.

39 mins: OVER! David Silva whips a corner into the box from the left flank and Busquets rises highest to head at goal. However, his effort sails harmlessly over the bar.

37 mins: This is Spain at their free-flowing best. They've got the ball on a string and are manoeuvring the Portugal defence around with ease. The European champions will be desperate for the half-time whistle to arrive.

35 mins: WIDE! Spain open up the Portugal defence with delightful one-touch passing on the edge of the box. Alba's cutback for Iniesta allows the midfielder to strike towards goal, but his effort just creeps past the post.

Diego Costa celebrating Spain Portugal

34 mins: It is all Spain at the moment as they are encamped in the Portugal half, exerting huge pressure on their backline. This is a massive test for Santos' men to hold their composure.

32 mins: Costa's goal was his first shot on target at a World Cup tournament.

31 mins: Spain have come storming back into the contest after their sluggish start. Hierro will be delighted with their response

29 mins: BLOCK! David Silva takes the free-kick, but he drills his left-footed strike into the wall, allowing Portugal to clear the danger.

28 mins: Yellow card! Fernandes trips Isco on the edge of the box and he goes into the book. Spain have a free-kick in a threatening position.

26 mins: OFF THE BAR!! Spain come within inches of the lead as Isco launches a volley from the edge of the box. His effort beats Patricio all ends up, but strikes the underside of the bar and bounces clear. Isco pleads with the referee for VAR, but the technology would have provided the immediate answer for the official. Replays show that the ball did not cross the line.

24 mins: GOALLLLLLLLL!!!! COSTA EQUALISES FOR SPAIN 1-1!!! Spain are back on level terms as Costa controls a long ball forward before firing a precise effort past Patricio into the bottom corner. Busquets launches a long ball forward to Costa, the forward then does it all himself as he fends off a challenge from Pepe before seeing off Fonte with ease. With his right foot he drills an effort into the bottom corner to notch the equaliser. A brilliant strike.

22 mins: CHANCE! Fonte clears the delivery from the corner and Portugal break with speed on the counter. Bernardo Silva releases Ronaldo, who lays it into the path of Guedes through the middle. However, the forward takes an awful first touch and allows Ramos to make the closing challenge. Ronaldo is not happy with his team-mate for spurning the opening.

21 mins: WIDE! Iniesta surges down the left flank and breaks into the box past Soares. He cuts the ball back for David Silva to strike, but his effort is diverted behind for a corner.

19 mins: BLOCK! Ronaldo takes the set-piece and hammers his effort straight into the wall before the referee awards a free-kick to Hierro's men.

The referenced media source is missing and needs to be re-embedded.

17 mins: Busquets catches Guedes late with a boot on the edge of the box. He goes into the book and hands Portugal an opening from the resulting free-kick. Ronaldo releases Guedes through the middle, with only Ramos to beat. However, the forward fails to make the most of the opening, driving a strike straight into the defender's legs.

16 mins: Isco has space down the left to send a cross to the back post, but Nacho is unable to keep the attack alive, failing to beat the first man with his low delivery. It allows Portugal to break on the counter.

15 mins: Alba raids into space down the left and lifts a cross into the box, but it's a simple one for Patricio to gather. Spain are trying to find their quality in the final third.

14 mins: Ronaldo's goal was Portugal's quickest in a World Cup game since 1966, when Jose Augusto scored after 1:35 against Hungary.

12 mins: Isco tries to weave his way forward through the Portugal defence. Pepe stops his progress, although he concedes a corner.

10 mins: OVER! Alba's cross finds its way to Costa in the middle and he knocks the ball towards David Silva on the edge of the box. The Manchester City midfielder pulls the trigger on a right-footed shot, only to blast his effort over the bar

9 mins: Spain are attempting to get their foot on the ball to establish a rhythm. They need to build their confidence this evening.

7 mins: It's a nightmare start for Spain. From the early stages of the contest, it does look as if the drama preceeding the game has had an effect on the players. Can they produce a response to the adversity?

5 mins: Nacho got squared up by Ronaldo and looked in trouble from the off. The forward drew the contact from his Real Madrid team-mate. He is off and running in the World Cup, notching only his fourth goal in the history of the tournament.

4 mins: GOALLLLLLLLLL!!!! 1-0 PORTUGAL!!! Ronaldo keeps his composure against De Gea, lifting his effort into the net. The Portugal skipper sends De Gea the wrong way with a fine finish from 12 yards. What a start for the European champions.

3 mins: PENALTY TO PORTUGAL! Nacho brings down Ronaldo on the charge and the referee does not hesitate to point to the spot.

2 mins: Portugal probe through the middle of the line, but Guedes' low pass towards the run of Ronaldo is cut out by Ramos.

Ronaldo takes possession for the first time and receives an ovation from the fans inside the Fisht Olympic Stadium.

1 min: We're underway in Sochi.

HERE WE GO!

5 mins till KO: The players are out on the pitch. It's time for the anthems.

None of Spain’s last 14 games at the World Cup have ended in a draw (W10 L4). They’ve lost three of their last six group games (W3), after winning each of their previous seven.

Iran's win over Morocco puts a little bit of pressure on both of these sides this evening. Both will be determined to start with a victory, which could leave the other in a spot of bother in their two remaining Group B matches.

10 mins till KO: A couple of pre-match stats for you ahead of the game.

Portugal and Spain’s only previous World Cup encounter was in 2010. Spain won 1-0 in the round of 16 thanks to a David Villa goal.

Portugal will attempt to become the fourth nation to win back-to-back European Championship and World Cup tournaments after West Germany (Euro 1972, World Cup 1974), France (World Cup 1998, Euro 2000) and Spain (Euro 2008, World Cup 2010, Euro 2012).

15 mins till KO: Santos has not provided a surprise with his line-up, with the only debate over who would partner Ronaldo in attack. Guedes has been given the nod over Andre Silva after scoring a brace in his side's final warm-up fixture against Algeria last week. The only other change from that game sees Fonte replace Bruno Alves in the heart of the defence.

Hierro has kept matters simple after a whirlwind 48 hours for his team. In Spain's final warm-up match they defeated Tunisia 1-0 with Aspas netting the decisive goal. From the team that started that contest, Hierro makes three changes. Costa leads the line through the middle, while Koke and Nacho are preferred to Thiago and Odriozola.

20 mins till KO: Here's a reminder of the team news.

Portugal (4-4-2): Rui Patricio; Cedric Soares, Pepe, Jose Fonte, Raphael Guerreiro; Bernardo Silva, Joao Moutinho, William Carvalho, Bruno Fernandes; Cristiano Ronaldo, Goncalo Guedes.

Portugal subs: Bruno Alves, Manuel Fernandes, Andre Silva, Joao Mario, Anthony Lopes, Ruben Dias, Ricardo Pereira, Gelson Martins, Mario Rui, Ricardo Quaresma, Beto, Adrian Silva.

Spain (4-2-3-1): David de Gea; Nacho, Gerard Pique, Sergio Ramos, Jordi Alba; Sergio Busquets, Koke; David Silva, Isco, Andres Iniesta; Diego Costa.

Spain subs: Daniel Carvajal, Saul Niguez, Rodrigo Moreno, Thiago Alcantara, Lucas Vazquez, Alvaro Odriozola, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Cesar Azpilicueta, Nacho Monreal, Iago Aspas, Marco Asensio, Jose Reina

25 mins till KO: Portugal were the surprise tale of Euro 2016 as Fernando Santos' men produced an enthralling run to the final before defeating France to win the competition. The team will now aim to join an elite group of sides to hold both the European and World crowns at the same time.

Cristiano Ronaldo remains the talisman of Portugal and he will be desperate for one last surge in what is likely to be his final World Cup. The 33-year-old remains at the peak of his powers, despite a slow start to the 2017-18 season with Real Madrid. He took a backseat in Madrid's Champions League triumph, but he will be the central figure if Santos' team are to advance into the latter stages of the tournament.

30 mins till KO: Fernando Hierro has stepped into the breach to take Spain onwards in the competition. He does not have a great deal of managerial experience outside of one season with Real Oviedo in the Segunda Division. Hierro has an abundance of talent at his disposal, but the pressure is on to maxmise the potential of the squad after their failure in the 2014 World Cup.

35 mins till KO: Spain have produced the drama of the tournament thus far by sacking manager Julen Lopetegui just two days before their opening match. The Spanish Football Federation made the decision after Lopetegui announced that he was to leave his role at the end of the World Cup to join Real Madrid.

45 mins till KO: Hello and welcome to Goal's LIVE commentary of the Group B World Cup clash between Portugal and Spain.
