Fantasy Baseball Rankings: Biggest risers
Taylor Walls, Tanner Bibee, Bryce Miller, Johan Oviedo, Matt Strahm, and Patrick Wisdom all saw the biggest rises in the rankings compared to their opening day rankings. Let’s take a look and see how these players have fared so far in 2023, and what to expect moving forward.
Taylor Walls, 2B/3B/SS, Tampa Bay Rays
Initial Rank: 750 Updated ROS Ranking: 222
Walls was initially ranked No. 750 and a complete afterthought heading into most fantasy drafts. He is off to a terrific start in 2023, slashing .288/.390/.545 with four home runs, 10 RBIs, 18 runs, and five stolen bases over 21 games. The 26-year-old’s hard-hit percentage is 35.3, up from 28.7 percent last season, and his wOBA of .403 is dramatically up from last season's .252. Walls hit in the middle of the order for one of the most explosive offenses in the league and should remain in the top 300 as long he continues to rake.
Patrick Wisdom, 3B/OF, Chicago Cubs
Initial Rank: 475 Updated ROS Ranking: 99
Wisdom has legit power and was a boom-or-bust option in 2022. He smashed 25 homers but hit .207 and struck out 34.3 percent of the time last season. Now, his .578 xSLG is in the 93rd percentile, and he's tied for second in the majors with 11 home runs. Overall, he's slashing .238/.325/.624 with a .949 OPS over 114 plate appearances. Wisdom was a late-round flier, at best, heading into fantasy drafts, and he's now cracked the top 100 in our latest refreshed rankings. Wisdom is well on his way to surpassing his career-high 28 home runs and should be a mainstay in the rankings as he continues to mash in 2023.
Other Key Risers:
Tanner Bibee, SP, Guardians (Initial Rank: 731, Updated ROS Ranking: 218)
Bryce Miller, SP, Mariners (750, 259)
Johan Oviedo, SP, Pirates (709, 249)
Matt Strahm, SP, Phillies (592, 203)
James Outman, OF, Dodgers (483, 161)
Fantasy Baseball Rankings: Biggest fallers
Andres Munoz, Josh Bell, Javier Baez, Triston McKenzie, Jose Abreu, Brady Singer, Oscar Gonzalez, Jake McCarthy, and MJ Melendez all saw the biggest decreases compared to their rankings before opening day. Let’s take a look and see how these players have fared so far in 2023 and what to expect moving forward.
Brady Singer, SP, Kansas City Royals
Initial Rank: 179 Updated ROS Ranking: 287
Singer is off to a terrible start, posting an 8.49 ERA, 1.52 WHIP, and 29:9 K:BB ratio across 29.2 innings. The 26-year-old righty posted a 3.23 ERA, 1.14 WHIP with a 23-percent strikeout rate last year. Singer is giving up too much hard contact, shown by his hard-hit percentage being in the top one percentile. It increased almost 20 points from 40.9 percent in '22 to 60.6 percent in '23. With an xERA of 7.11, he has allowed 22 earned runs over his past four starts. Singer continues to dip in the rankings and could fall out of the top 300 if he doesn't turn things around in May.
Javier Baez, SS, Detroit Tigers
Initial Rank: 160 Updated ROS Ranking: 285
Baez has been largely disappointing for fantasy owners since last season and is off to a slow start in 2023. He is slashing .237/.292/.320 with a home run, 12 RBIs, 12 runs, and two stolen bases across 106 plate appearances. The 30-year-old has seen his wOBA drop from .344 in '21, to .291 in '22, and .275 in '23. His HR/FB rate is at a woeful 3.8 percent, and his xSLG is in the 12th percentile. Baez has lived off high BAIPs throughout his career and continues to struggle with the Tigers since signing a six-year, $140 million contract in '21. The former Cub hasn’t shown any signs of turning things around and could fall out of the top 300 rankings if he continues to struggle at the plate.
Other Fallers
Andres Munoz, RP, Mariners (Initial Rank: 143, Updated ROS Ranking: 272)
Josh Bell, 1B, Guardians (157, 283)
Triston McKenzie, SP, Guardians (89, 202)
Jose Abreu, 1B, Astros (78, 190)
MJ Melendez, C/OF, Royals (119, 231)
Notable Injuries
Injuries continue to pile up throughout the season, as Yankees superstar outfielder Aaron Judge (hip) and Texas Rangers ace Jacob deGrom (elbow) recently landed on the injured list.
However, we did also see some returns. Phillies star outfielder Bryce Harper (elbow) miraculously made his season debut on Tuesday, needing less than six months after undergoing Tommy John surgery on his right elbow in late November.
Some of the most significant injuries in April were O’Neil Cruz (ankle), Robbie Ray (elbow), Jeffrey Springs (elbow), and Logan O’Hoppe (shoulder). All of them were in the top 300 heading into opening day but are now out for either the majority or all of 2023.
The good news is fantasy stars such as Texas Rangers shortstop Corey Seager (hamstring) and Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve (thumb) are expected to return soon.
