Fantasy Baseball Rankings: Biggest risers

Elly De La Cruz, Blake Snell, Josh Naylor, Spencer Steer, Ezequiel Duran, Craig Kimbrel, and Maikel Garcia all saw the most significant increases compared to their ranks in early June. Andrew Abbott, Nolan Jones, Spencer Torkelson, Gavin Williams, and Jordan Walker cracked the top 300 after not making the cut in the previous rankings. Let’s take a look and see how these players have fared so far in 2023 and what to expect moving forward.

Elly De La Cruz, 3B/SS, Reds
June’s Rank:
263 Updated ROS Ranking: 14

De la Cruz is one of the most exciting players in all of baseball. The 21-year-old speedster was promoted on June 6 and continues to be a fantasy machine. He is slashing .325/.363/.524 with four home runs, 16 RBIs, 28 runs, and 16 stolen bases over his first 30 big league games. De La Cruz's speed and raw power are off the charts, and he will be a fantasy monster for many years. The Reds rookie phenom’s power grades out at 70, while his sprint speed is in the 100th percentile. Fantasy owners who were lucky enough to add him off the waiver wire got a league winner that could single-handedly carry them to a fantasy championship.

Blake Snell, SP, Padres
June Rank:
221 Updated ROS Ranking: 59

Snell went on an incredible run in June and was an ace for both the Padres and fantasy owners. He owned a 0.87 ERA, 0.68 WHIP, and a whopping 53:8 K: BB across 31 innings (four starts). The 30-year-old lefty went through a dominant stretch where he allowed more than one earned run just once over eight starts. Snell’s 31.3 strikeout percentage is in the 91st percentile, and his whiff percentage is in the 93rd percentile. The southpaw saw his ERA drop from 5.40 in mid-May to 2.85 at the break. Snell has become a fantasy ace who could rise in the rankings if he continues to build on his impressive run.

Other Key Risers
Spencer Steer, 3B, Reds (June’s Rank: 185, Updated ROS Ranking: 94)
Josh Naylor 1B/OF, Guardians (216, 121)
Craig Kimbrel, RP, Phillies (228, 138)
Ezequiel Duran, 2B/3B/SS, Rangers (218, 122)
Maikel Garcia, SS, Royals (298, 211)

Fantasy Baseball Rankings: Biggest fallers

Tim Anderson, Ryan Helsley, Jake Cronenworth, Nolan Gorman, Cal Raleigh, Liam Hendriks, and Lars Nootbaar all saw the most significant decreases compared to last month’s rest-of-season rankings. Let’s take a look and see how these players have fared so far in 2023 and what to expect moving forward.

Ryan Helsley, RP, Cardinals
June Rank:
123 Updated ROS Ranking: NA

Since mid-June, Helsley (forearm) has been sidelined with a right forearm strain. The 28-year-old righty was four-for-seven in save opportunities while posting a 3.24 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and a 33:11 K: BB across 25 innings before landing on the injured list. Jordan Hicks has taken over the closer role in St. Louis while Helsley has been sidelined. Since moving to ninth inning, Hicks is seven-for-eight in save opportunities, posting a 2.16 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, and 10.8 K:9 over his past 8.1 innings. Helsley has been cleared to throw and could be on track to return at the end of July. With the injury risk and Hicks performing well as the Cardinals' primary closer, Helsley might not regain the ninth-inning role when he returns and is no longer in the top-300 rest-of-season rankings.

Lars Nootbaar, OF, Cardinals
June Rank:
164 Updated ROS Ranking: 287

Nootbaar was a trendy sleeper in 2023 drafts due to his ability to hit for average and get on base. The 25-year-old lefty has had a disappointing '23 campaign, slashing .259/.358/.382 with five home runs, 25 RBIs, 37 runs, and five stolen bases over 258 plate appearances. He is occasionally on the bench due to a crowded Cardinals outfield that includes Jordan Walker, Dylan Carlson, Tommy Edman, Tyler O’Neill, and Brendan Donovan. Nootbaar’s BB percentage is in the 94th percentile, and he is starting to heat up by collecting a hit in nine of his past 10 games. If Nootbaar can continue to rack up the hits, he might climb back up the rankings, but he likely won't be in the top 200 again until he consistently produces run production for the Cardinals and fantasy owners.

Other Fallers
Liam Hendriks, RP, White Sox (June Rank: 145, Updated ROS Ranking: 264)
Tim Anderson, SS, White Sox (84, 183)
Jake Cronenworth, 1B/2B/3B, Padres (147, 265)
Nolan Gorman, 2B, Cardinals (161, 282)
Cal Raleigh, C, Mariners (139, 240)

Notable Injuries

Injuries continue to pile up, as Angels' outfielder Mike Trout (hand), Yankees' slugger Aaron Judge (foot), Astros' outfielder Yordan Alvarez (oblique), and Astros' second baseman Jose Altuve (oblique) are all on the injured list. Cleveland's Triston McKenzie has also been shut down for multiple weeks after he was diagnosed with a partially torn right UCL.

However, we did also see some returns. Tigers' outfielder Riley Greene (fibula) returned from a long layoff over the weekend, and Braves lefty Max Fried (forearm) began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Gwinnett on Sunday. Cardinals' outfielder Tyler O’Neill (back) is also on a rehab assignment and is on track to return after the All-Star break. Trevor Story (elbow) is closing in on a rehab assignment and could make his season debut after the All-Star break.
