Legalized sports betting has exploded onto the scene in the United States following the reversal of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA) in 2018. Since then, 33 states plus the District of Columbia have legalized sports betting in some capacity, and this number is sure to increase in the coming years.

Is sports betting legal in New York?

New York legalized sports betting at their commercial casinos in 2013, but legal online sports betting didn't go into action until January 2022. This also includes residents being able to bet on sports via mobile and retail. Additionally, the first in-person sportsbook opened in New York in July 2019.

How do I bet on sports in New York?

New Yorkers over the age of 21 can make online, mobile, and retail wagers, but all legal sports bets have to be made within state lines.

Mobile sportsbooks utilize geolocation to track your phone’s internal GPS chip. When betting online, users are prompted to download a plugin to make legalized bets. If making retail wagers, bettors can head to one of the many casinos across the state of New York.

Can I bet on college sports in New York?

Residents cannot bet on any New York Division 1 collegiate teams, including individual player props during the college basketball and football seasons. Additionally, NY residents cannot bet on in-state collegiate events, such as college football bowl games, college basketball conference tournaments, and March Madness games.

However, NY residents can bet on college sports and teams that are located outside of the state. This means they can place futures bets on conference championships, the Heisman Trophy, or over/under win totals.

Where can I bet on sports in New York?

Currently, nine online sportsbooks operate in the state of New York, along with 11 retail sportsbooks. Those 11 retail sportsbooks are affiliated with various commercial casinos and tribal casinos across the state. When it comes to online sportsbooks such as FanDuel, DraftKings, etc., they have partnerships with the local teams in the state.
