NFL Week 2 Betting Picks: Spread pick of the week

All data presented is as of Friday morning.

Bears (-2.5) at Broncos

This game opened at even odds, but the line slightly moved in Chicago’s favor. After a shocking defeat at the hands of the Antonio Brown-less Raiders, we learned a few things about the Broncos. Joe Flacco looked a lot like the “elite” quarterback we saw in Baltimore (21-for-31, 268 yards, TD). Outside of Courtland Sutton and Emmanuel Sanders, Flacco seemingly doesn’t have many reliable options to throw the ball to. Further, while the duo of Royce Freeman (10 carries for 56 yards, one catch for five yards) and Phillip Lindsay (11 carries for 43 yards, four catches for 23 yards) performed decently, the offense was very vanilla and predictable. Most importantly, defensive-guru-turned-head-coach Vic Fangio’s dynamic pass-rushing duo Von Miller and Bradley Chubb didn’t record a single sack against what was supposed to be a weak Raiders offensive line (Denver’s entire defense was shut out in that category).

While the Bears had a disappointing and embarrassing Week 1 performance of their own, any low-scoring, defensive-oriented battle will likely swing in their favor. They allowed just 10 points in a hard-fought battle against the Packers and Aaron Rodgers in their opener, so how do you think Flacco and company will fare? Bet on the Bears and remember how dominant they were at times last season when their offense was performing at an average level.

NFL Week 2 Betting Picks: Moneyline pick of the week

Patriots (-1840) at Dolphins

This feels like cheating, doesn’t it?  No matter what your personal betting strategy is, I think it’s safe to say that it would be the most shocking sporting event in your lifetime if the Patriots lose to the Dolphins this Sunday.

OK, maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but these odds give New England a 94.8-percent implied probability to win the game. While you would only make a cool $5.43 on a $100 bet, you’re essentially guaranteed money by betting on the Patriots in this spot. (If you’re a high-stakes bettor, this is a great time to build the bankroll.)

Miami is an organization in disarray. Multiple players have reportedly asked to be traded. Their defense just allowed Lamar Jackson to look like the best quarterback in the sport’s history and surrendered 59 points in the process. Ryan Fitzpatrick looked like, well, Ryan Fitzpatrick, and the offense mustered only 10 points in Week 1, as well.

While the 19-point spread is another conversation due to New England’s tendency to run out the clock and pound the ball up the middle with comfortable leads, Tom Brady simply has too many offensive options at his disposal to not succeed in this situation. New England’s defense should also have a field day. Bet as much as you’re comfortable with on the Patriots to win outright.

NFL Week 2 Betting Picks: Over/under pick of the week

Cardinals vs. Ravens (OVER 46 total points)

Per BetQL’s Line Movement Dashboard, 70 percent of the total tickets and a whopping 94 percent of the total money has gone on the OVER in this matchup. After watching Kyler Murray morph from a draft bust to a superstar in the span of a few quarters, the public is all over the idea that this will be a high-scoring affair, and I agree. We all knew there would be a learning curve for Kliff Kingsbury’s “Air Raid” offense in the NFL, and it might have only lasted a few quarters. Murray looked poised as he saw more snaps, and the offensive scheme in general looked dynamic toward the end of their Week 1 overtime tie against the Lions.

Meanwhile, we all know what Lamar Jackson and company did to the poor Dolphins. Although he didn’t have to run out of the pocket in that contest, he was a thrower first, which was a noticeable deviation from his playing style last season. If he continues to take shots down the field and Murray does the same when it’s his turn, the point total should smash the OVER.
