Mat Latos has reportedly undergone surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee after slipping and falling while throwing.

That sounds bad, and it just might be, but the Reds, so far, are downplaying the injury. They say Latos he will attempt to resume throwing again in 10 days. As for actually pitching, that remains to be seen. Recovery time from meniscus tears depend on the person, but 2-4 weeks before regaining full range of motion seems to be common.

Obviously, that’s a setback, but not the type that would cost Latos significant time. It’s possible Latos could be ready in time for Opening Day, or at least the first few weeks of the season. He seems unlikely to miss more than a couple of starts, at most.

With that said, this is now the second surgery Latos has undergone since the end of last season. He had bone chips removed from his throwing arm in October.

Since he’s had the surgery already, it’s more of a question of whether Latos will be ready rather than him being a true injury risk as a result of the tear. Because of that, owners should hold off making any drastic decisions about his draft stock at the current time. If by mid-March Latos isn’t pitching in Catcus League contests, then move him down boards, since he will almost certainly miss time. If he has started pitching, then don’t make any big adjustments since he’ll likely be ready by the first or second week of the season.
