Fantasy Football Injury Updates: Is Patrick Mahomes playing in Week 9? image

Patrick Mahomes' injury had the potential to change fantasy football seasons, but with his return looking likely for Week 10, if not Week 9, the short gap his owners have had to deal with without him will soon have passed by. Mahomes hasn't yet taken first-team reps in Chiefs' practices, but it seems like all it will take is one encouraging day for Andy Reid to throw him back into the fire. If Mahomes is active, he's our No. 2 fantasy QB this week. If Mahomes is out, it'll be Matt Moore starting again. Fantasy owners will be eagerly looking for injury updates on Sunday morning ahead of start-or-sit decisions, and we'll have them below.

Is Patrick Mahomes playing in Week 9?

UPDATE 3: Mahomes is officially OUT.

UPDATE 2: ESPN's Adam Schefter reported early Sunday morning that Mahomes is expected to miss Sunday's game against Minnesota.

UPDATE 1: ESPN's Ed Werder reported on Saturday that Mahomes has "a chance" to play in Week 9 against the Vikings.

Mahomes worked as the No. 2 Kansas City QB in Wednesday's practice, with Matt Moore still getting the first-team reps. The report on Sunday from Ian Rapoport suggested there's a realistic chance Mahomes will be back in Week 10. Andy Reid had suggested after last week's practice involvement that Mahomes was "close."

If Mahomes is unable to make it back for Week 9 against Minnesota, it appears most signs point to his return in Week 10 against the Titans.

Mahomes' presence affects the whole game flow of Vikings-Chiefs on Sunday. With him there, Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce get boosts (although both are starters with Matt Moore, too). A Mahomes activation also probably leads to more throwing from the Vikings if they fall behind, helping out Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen. If Moore is starting for the Chiefs, Dalvin Cook should have a field day on about 25 carries against one of the league's worst run defenses.
