De Gea is like something from The Matrix - Redknapp image

David de Gea is "like a character in The Matrix", according to former England midfielder Jamie Redknapp, who says there has only ever been one better goalkeeper in the Premier League.

The Spain international made 14 saves in an incredible display for Manchester United on Saturday as they beat Arsenal 3-1 at the Emirates Stadium.

De Gea's performance saw many, including coach Jose Mourinho, hail him as the best in the world, while he said he felt "unstoppable" when upsetting Arsene Wenger's side.

And Redknapp has also been left impressed and pointed to two saves in quick succession that resembled the heroics seen in the hit film starring Keanu Reeves. However, he still thinks Old Trafford legend Peter Schmeichel is the only one who could have topped him.

"I must admit I got it wrong about David de Gea when he arrived in the Premier League," ex-Liverpool and Tottenham player Redknapp wrote of the 27-year-old in The Daily Mail .

"I remember seeing this wiry 20-year-old [sic] in goal whose kit looked too big for him. I thought: ‘Surely he is not built for the physicality of the Premier League?’

"Since then, he has made all his critics eat their words. I do not think I have seen a better shot-stopper than De Gea.

"He is like a character in The Matrix the way he looks as if he is slowing the ball down before making a save!

"What De Gea lacks in physical presence he more than makes up for in agility. You will struggle to see a better double-save this season than his effort to deny Alexandre Lacazette and Alexis Sanchez.

"But where does De Gea sit among the best ever Premier League keepers? For me, he is second only to Peter Schmeichel, who is still the No.1.

"Schmeichel was so imposing. Time and again you would be put through one-on-one, make a great connection and feel convinced you had scored - only for him to pull off a sensational save."
