Ronaldo held silent - Madrid star's record Champions League scoring streak ends at 11 image

Cristiano Ronaldo's record goalscoring streak in the Champions League has finally come to an end, with the Real Madrid superstar drawing a blank in his side's 2-1 win over Bayern Munich in Wednesday's semi-final first leg.

The Portuguese star had scored in 11 straight Champions League matches ahead of the clash at the Allianz Arena, and only a handball kept him from extending his run against the Germans.

Over the course of the record 11-match run, Ronaldo netted an astonishing total of 17 goals, including five in three matches against Juventus.

Goals from Marcelo and Marco Asensio were enough to push Madrid into a lead in the tie, but for Ronaldo it was the end of what could be viewed as a perfect season in the Champions League so far.

The 33-year-old had scored in all 10 matches in the competition so far this season, with his streak extending back to last season's Champions League final when he scored twice against Juventus in a 4-1 win.

Ronaldo had bagged an impressive 15 goals in 10 matches this term heading into Wednesday's clash and had netted in 14 of 15 Champions League matches dating back to last season.

The win over Bayern also saw Ronaldo held without a shot on target on Wednesday, the first time that had happened in Champions League clash since a clash against Napoli in Feburary of 2017.

Fortunately for Madrid both Marcelo and Asensio were on hand to give the Spanish giants a lead ahead of the second leg in Madrid.

Marcelo's first-half strike was his third of the Champions League season, a personal high for the Brazilian.

For Asensio, who came off the bench to net the winner, it is becoming a bit of a habit to score from the bench in Champions League knockout matches.

In fact, the last three goals scored by the 22-year-old in Europe's top competition have come as a substitute in the knockout rounds.
