Explained: Why India were awarded five penalty runs against USA in 2024 T20 World Cup encounter? image

India played a high-intensity clash against co-hosts United States of America at the Nassau County Stadium in New York. As both teams battled out for a top spot in Group A, the stakes only increased as the match progressed.

USA scored 110 runs in their 20 overs on a low-scoring pitch in New York. Chasing 111, both Indian openers, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were sent back to the pavilion by Saurabh Netravalkar.

As the game progressed, India were awarded five runs to their total, as USA breached the over-rate time limit. Here's what happened in New York!

Why were India awarded five penalty runs against USA at 2024 T20 World Cup?

The International Cricket Council (ICC) formulated a permanent rule in March 2024, regarding the over-rate in limited-overs cricket.

Ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024, the ICC announced the penalty of five runs, if the fielding side failed to maintain a certain over rate. USA failed to maintain the over-rate against India and were penalised by five runs.

The USA were penalised in the 16th over, as India were nearing the 111-run target. Courtesy of the five extra runs, the Men in Blue chased the total with nine deliveries to spare.

What is the ICC rule regarding the over-rate in T20Is?

The ICC formulated a rule regarding slow over-rate in limited-overs cricket. As per the rule, the fielding team is allowed one minute of time between two overs, to get settled and start bowling the next over.

To err is human, and teams miss the timing quite a few times. Any team will be given two leeway warnings by the on-field umpires. If a team breaches the limit for the third time, the batting team will be awarded five extra runs to their total, as a penalty suffered by the fielding side.

If the team does it for the fourth time, five more runs will be awarded. The trend will repeat for every breach after the third count.
