Why are Gennadiy Golovkin's fights on DAZN? GGG's deal, record, fight schedule image

Not long after his rival Canelo Alvarez agreed to a deal with DAZN, Gennadiy Golovkin followed suit, signing an exclusive contract with the global streaming platform for three years.

That means DAZN will broadcast all of GGG's next six fights — two per year — over the course of the deal, beginning June 8 with a fight against undefeated Steve Rolls on at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Golovkin is one of the biggest names in boxing, with his pair of fights against Alvarez being considered as two of the biggest in the sport in recent memory. Beginning with his first bout against Rolls, DAZN will be the exclusive home for all of GGG's fights. Here are all the details.

Why are Gennadiy Golovkin's fights on DAZN?

Gennadiy Golovkin became one of boxing's most coveted free agents when HBO folded its boxing business in September 2018. His fight against Canelo Alvarez weeks earlier generated 1.1 million pay-per-view buys.

Enter DAZN, which coincidentally launched in the United States in September 2018. The live-sports streaming platform markets itself as the antithesis of the PPV model, offering fight fans monthly and annual subscriptions at a fraction of the price of a single pay-per-view event.

After Alvarez signed with DAZN in October, his middleweight rival GGG was considered an obvious target for DAZN. That marriage came to fruition in March 2018, stoking the rumors of a seemingly inevitable trilogy fight between Alvarez and Golovkin on DAZN.

What is GGG's deal with DAZN?

Golovkin, 37, is under contract to fight six times on DAZN through 2021, paying him a reported $100 million. That works out to two fights per year beginning with his DAZN debut on June 8 against Steve Rolls. It's expected GGG will fight once more in 2019 following that fight.

What is Gennady Golovkin's career record?

Despite some shortcomings as of late, Golovkin's boxing career has produced many more highs than lows. His career record sits at 38-1-1, with the loss and draw both coming against Alvarez. Golovkin started his career by winning 37 fights, including 33 by knockout. Although he has yet to beat Alvarez, rumors of a third matchup persist, which would give him another opportunity for a victory. Golovkin's last win came in a second-round knockout on May 5, 2018 against Vanes Martirosyan.

  • Total fights: 40
  • Career record: 38-1-1
  • Wins by knockout: 34
  • World titles held (current): None
  • World titles held (past): WBA (Super), WBC, IBO and IBF middleweight titles.
  • Last fight: Loss via majority decision vs. Canelo Alvarez for WBA (Super), WBC, IBO and vacant The Ring and lineal middleweight titles
  • Next fight: Steve Rolls

When is GGG's next fight?

Golovkin's contract with DAZN spans six fights over a three-year period. His next fight will be against Steve Rolls at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Although it's not yet confirmed, a much-rumored trilogy against Alvarez likely looms in the near future considering the amount of money and fan interest at stake.
