A healthy Vergil Ortiz Jr. is ready to conquer a new division when he faces Fredrick Lawson in a super welterweight fight on January 6. The fight in Las Vegas airs on DAZN worldwide.
A Golden Gloves silver medalist in 2016, Ortiz made his pro debut later that year. In 2021, the talented Texas-born fighter scored stoppage wins over former champion Maurice Hooker and former world title challenger Egidijus Kavaliauskas. His last contest was in August 2022 against Michael McKinson, who he also stopped via the power punch to add to his 100% knockout-to-win ratio.
Ortiz was supposed to fight Eimantas Stanionis at one point, but Ortiz’s lingering issues with rhabdomyolysis got in the way. He now hopes to leave his health issues behind him.
"Headlining my first card in Las Vegas after over a year of inactivity is just what I needed," said Ortiz. "I am very motivated to put on a great show like I always do, and to show everyone that I’m still here."

Lawson turned pro in 2011. Born in Ghana, "General Okunka" is 3-2 in his last five fights. After losing against Charles Hatley in 2021, Lawson returned to action in 2023, beating Collinson Korley and Estevan Villabolos, the latter contest in April.
