Teofimo Lopez headlines a rare Thursday fight night when he defends the WBO and The Ring super lightweight titles against Jamaine Ortiz on February 8. A few days before the Super Bowl, the fight in Las Vegas airs on ESPN+ in the U.S.

A 2015 Golden Gloves gold medalist, Lopez turned pro in 2016. "The Takeover" beat Richard Commey in 2019 for the IBF lightweight title and Vasiliy Lomachenko in 2020 for the WBA, WBO, and The Ring belts. On top of the world, Taylor lost the belts against George Kambosos Jr. in 2021. He has since won three in a row, beating Pedro Campa in 2022 for the NABF super lightweight title.

Taylor last fought in June, beating Josh Taylor to win the WBO and Ring belts and regaining the confidence he lost after the Kambosos fight.

"Jamaine is tough. I would know, because I faced him back in the amateur days in 2015 for the National Golden Gloves Championship. I'll show the world that champions don't flinch when faced with challenges," Lopez said. "They rise and shine the brightest when the stakes are highest. This one is for all my people on the Takeover Express! Let’s show the world once again what real boxing looks like."

Ortiz made his pro debut in 2016. After fighting Joseph Adorno to a draw, Ortiz beat Mahir Albright and Jamel Herring in 2022, the latter for the NABF lightweight title. He lost against Lomachenko in October 2022 but established himself as a tough challenge for the former champion. "The Technician" last fought in September, beating Antonio Moran.

"This is the most important fight of my career," Ortiz said. "It’s my first world title bout. I believe this fight will bring out the very best in me, and I’m looking forward to coming home as the new champion!"
