GGG vs. Sergiy Derevyanchenko fight results: Big drama as Golovkin escapes with unanimous decision to reclaim IBF title image

NEW YORK — Not the kind of "Big Drama Show" that Gennadiy Golovkin was thinking.

Sergiy Derervyanchenko gave GGG everything he could handle and more, but Golovkin was announced as the winner by unanimous decision (115-112, 115-112, 114-113) to claim the IBF world middleweight title at Madison Square Garden, and live on DAZN, on Saturday night.

Golovkin (40-1-1, 35 KOs) dropped Derevyanchenko in the first round with a right on top of the head and opened up a nasty gash over his right eye with a left hook in the second, but had it rough the rest of the way through. Derevyanchenko emptied out his ammunition in the 10th round, especially, hurting GGG with a barrage of blistering shots, having earned his respect and arguably even the victory — depending on how you see it.

But when it was all said and done — controversial or not — the 37-year-old Golovkin walks out of MSG as a two-time world middleweight champ. Here's how the fight unfolded.

GGG vs. Sergiy Derevyanchenko live updates, results, highlights

Main event: Gennadiy Golovkin edges Sergiy Derevyanchenko by unanimous decision to claim the IBF middleweight title

11:47 p.m.: The scorecards are announced and Gennadiy Golovkin wins by unanimous decision by the scores of 115-112, 115-112 and 114-113.

Round 12:  GGG lands a left hook early, but Derevyanchenko comes right back with a flurry of shots. Left-right combo lands for Derevyanchenko, but Golovkin comes back with a sweeping right hook. An uppercut lands moments later for GGG as well. Another uppercut lands during the waning seconds. Hell of a fight. Let's see how the judges score this one in New York City, as Derevyanchenko's corner applies heavy gauze over that right eye. SN has GGG winning by a slim margin, but honestly, this could go the other way justifiably. 10-9, GGG (115-112, GGG)

Round 11:  A better round for GGG, but this is clearly not the "Big Drama Show" he envisioned. The 12th and final round next. 10-9, GGG (105-103, GGG)

Round 10:  Derevyanchenko's busy style is paying off for him. He's pummeling GGG this round. Wow. He has Golovkin in trouble, stinging him with combinations. A blistering display from the Ukrainian. Derevyanchenko emptied out his arsenal that round and threw everything at GGG, even prompting the former world middleweight champ to clinch. 10-9, Derevyanchenko (95-94, GGG)

11:30 p.m.:  Derevyanchenko has clearly earned GGG's respect thus far. More than earned his respect. His rugged style is definitely a test for GGG tonight.

Round 9: A riveting uppercut from GGG to start the round. But as the frame continues, it's Derevyanchenko fighting back and stinging Golovkin with some blistering shots of his own. 10-9, Derevyanchenko (86-84, Derevyanchenko)

Round 8:  Golovkin asserting his power punching once again this round, driving back Derevyanchenko. But regardless of how hard he's being hit, Derevyanchenko keeps moving forward. Still, GGG got the better of the exchanges this round, including a solid right-left combo. 10-9, GGG (77-74, GGG)

Round 7:  Most of the round being fought phone-booth style in close quarters, with GGG reminding Derevyanchenko of his power by wrapping around his guard with some powerful right hooks. Both boxers fighting fire with fire as the bell sounds. Solid fight thus far. Derevyanchenko's cut is being monitored closely after each round, as something to keep aware of moving forward. 10-9, GGG (67-65, GGG)

Round 6:  Derevyanchenko has dug all the way back into this fight after that first-round knockdown and second-round gash. Another busy, high-volume punching display, with the Ukrainian getting inside enough to take the round. But GGG did land a left that popped Derevyanchenko's head back and followed that with a right uppercut to end the frame. 10-9, Derevyanchenko (57-56, GGG)

Round 5:  Derevyanchenko splitting GGG's guard with a stiff right down the middle, but Golovkin eats the punch. A rapid three-piece combo follows moments later from the Ukrainian. He's "The Technician" for a reason, sneaking in and sticking plenty of pinpoint punches, including a late body shot that seemed to make GGG grimace in pain. Another round for Derevyanchenko. 10-9, Derevyanchenko (48-46, GGG)

Round 4:  GGG has a habit of sticking his head out with his gloves in front of his face, but forehead exposed. Derevyanchenko is using that window to pepper Golovkin with a busy, high volume of punches. He takes the round behind that activity. 10-9, Derevyanchenko (39-36, GGG)

Round 3:  Derevyanchenko lands a lunging left hook to put GGG on notice of his own power during the first minute of this round. And he follows that up with a flurry of punches. He's putting some pressure on Golovkin. Just when it looked like Derevyanchenko was winning this round, Golovkin lasers a stiff right to Derevyanchenko's face, knocking his head back, with the best punch of the round. He takes another round, but Derevyanchenko had some good moments there and definitely grabbed GGG's attention. 10-9, GGG (30-26, GGG)

Round 2:  A left to the body followed by a left hook that raked across Derevyanchenko's face and GGG is in firm control, as — no surprise — the way more powerful puncher. Derevyanchenko's corner tending to a gash over his right eye already. 10-9, GGG (20-17, GGG)

Round 1:  Both fighters feeling each other out as expected early on here. Golovkin with a right upstairs and a left to the body. Moments later, GGG drops Derevyanchenko with a flurry of close punches, including the right on top of the head that seemed to do it inside. Derevyanchenko gets up and digs back into the fight immediately, but has felt GGG's power. (10-8, GGG)

10:54 p.m.:  Michael Buffer announces both fighters and here comes the opening bell.

10:49 p.m.:  After Derevyanchenko made the quick entrance, the crowd is chanting "GGG! GGG!" as the former world middleweight champ is on his way to the ring. The crowd erupts upon seeing him. This main event is minutes away now.

10:42 p.m.:  The three national anthems have been performed. Tracy Morgan, Wesley Snipes amongst the celebrities here at the Garden, as both fighters are about to make their ring walks.

10:30 p.m.:  About time for that action. The crowd here at MSG roars upon seeing GGG on the big screen. That pop is going to get much louder when the man makes his ring walk, trying to become a two-time world middleweight champion.

10:17 p.m.:  GGG-Derevyanchenko about 15 minutes away. WBC interim lightweight champion Devin Haney all smiles here at Madison Square Garden.

Co-main event: Israil Madrimov batters Alejandro Barrera with fifth-round TKO; Junior middleweight

Round 5:  Madrimov is repeatedly going to the body with the left to set up a right hook upstairs. Barrera's midsection must feel like jelly at this point. More body shots, more hooks across the chin. This is a real beating going on. And the ref has seen enough, waving off the fight. Too many unanswered shots from Madrimov. An overhand right and left sealed the win. That was a good stoppage.

Round 4:  Madrimov is battering Barrera to the body and the beating is definitely taking a toll. 10-9, Madrimov (40-35, Madrimov)

10:00 p.m.:  As this co-feature continues, Sergiy Derevyanchenko is doing his best to enter a zone and get locked in for later tonight in what will be the biggest fight of his life.

Round 3:  Barrera is trying valiantly to find his footing and dig his way into this fight, but Madrimov remains in firm control, landing a stinging shot during the waning seconds of the round. 10-9, Madrimov (30-26, Madrimov)

Round 2:  Madrimov is clearly trying to deliver his own "Big Drama Show" early on here. He's lunging with his left hooks. 10-9, Madrimov (20-17, Madrimov)

Round 1: Madrimov drops Barrera with a picture-perfect left hook early here. Barrera gets up off the mat and survives the round. (Madrimov 10-8).

9:45 p.m.:  Israil Madrimov and Alejandro Barrera are in the ring and this co-main event is about to begin.

Ivan Baranchyk blasts Gabriel Bracero with fourth-round TKO

9:30 p.m.:  A vicious overhand right landed across Bracero's chin. He tried to hold onto Baranchyk's waist but crashed face-first to the canvas. Although he managed to get back on his feet, his corner jumped up onto the ring apron and threw in the towel to end the fight, awarding Baranchyk with the fourth-round TKO.

9:20 p.m.:  Through two rounds, Baranchyk has his hands full with Bracero, who's throwing and landing with bad intentions.

9:10 p.m.:  After several one-sided blowouts on the undercard, we're getting started with the main card as Ivan Baranchyk squares off against Gabriel Bracero. Baranchyk is coming off of a loss at the WBSS against Josh Taylor but enters the fight as a huge 30-1 favorite.

The entire undercard for GGG vs. Derevyanchenko is free to view across DAZN's  Twitter , Facebook and YouTube platforms between 7-9 p.m. ET.
