Working his way back up the ladder after losing lightweight gold, Vasiliy Lomachenko is looking to complete the ultimate comeback story. The Ukrainian wizard challenges Devin Haney for the status of undisputed lightweight champion on May 20 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The bout, plus undercard action, will air on ESPN+ PPV.
Lomachenko, who won lightweight gold in 2018, held a firm grip on the division until Teofimo Lopez beat him in 2020. He has since won three in a row, defending his country against Russia between his two most recent outings. “The Matrix,” with 11 wins via knockout, is ready to prove he is still a top fighter at the age of 35.
Haney became interim WBC lightweight champion in 2019 and was elevated once Lomachenko got promoted to "franchise champion" status. It has taken longer than expected for the two to face one another, and Haney believes a fight now will be different than what could have been in 2019.

"It's definitely tougher for him now, I'm a much better fighter than I was four years ago, much stronger, more mature, more experienced in the ring," Haney told Sky Sports. "I know he is a tough competitor, he's going to prepare well for the fight, but I will be the better man that night.”
