A former WBC heavyweight champion, Deontay Wilder’s attempt at a comeback starts on October 15. Inside the Barclays Center, Wilder faces off against a tough challenge in top contender Robert Helenius.

The fight is considered a WBC heavyweight title eliminator. Helenius is currently a contender for the WBA heavyweight title.

A 2008 Olympic bronze medalist, Wilder made his pro debut in 2008. He won the WBC heavyweight title in 2015 against Bermane Stiverne. It was a unanimous decision win, the first of his career in his 33rd fight (all other bouts prior to that one were won via knockout). Wilder defended the title ten times, with a draw against Tyson Fury in the middle of those defenses.

Wilder lost to Fury in a rematch in February 2020 via TKO. He returned in October 2021. In the trilogy fight Fury knocked him out in the eleventh round to retain the WBC title.

“Every time I fight, you’re on the edge of your seat, because I’m going in there 110%. I’m looking forward to this fight and coming back to Barclays Center, where some of my most exciting knockouts have occurred. I have remarkable memories there and I can’t wait to display my talent,” Wilder stated at the introductory press conference.

A 2006 silver medalist in the European Championships, Helenius made his pro debut in 2008. A European heavyweight champion, Helenius is 7-2 in his last nine fights. After losing to Gerald Washington in 2019, he beat Mateus Roberto Osorio a few months later.

In the last major boxing bout before the COVID-19 pandemic shut everything down in March 2020, Helenius beat Adam Kownacki via TKO in what was considered an upset. His last bout was a rematch against Kownacki in October 2021, where Helenius beat him again via TKO. The series win made him a contender for the WBA heavyweight title.

“I’ve promised my fans in Finland that I would bring the world title back home and sometimes you have to go through a lot to get there," Helenius stated. "But I’m going to do everything I can. We’re doing all the extra work that we need to."
