Jermell Charlo is willing to risk it all to enhance his legacy in boxing. The undisputed super welterweight champion faces Canelo Alvarez for the latter’s status of undisputed super middleweight champion on September 30 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The 12-round bout, plus undercard action, will air on Showtime PPV and PPV.com.
Having fought for super welterweight belts since 2016, Charlo defeated John Jackson, Tony Harrison, Jeison Rosario, and Brian Castano to emerge as the undisputed champ. He has been out of action since May 2022 after suffering a broken wrist during training. Inactivity could play a factor, and Charlo will also be stripped of his WBO 154-pound title the moment he steps forward to face Canelo.

“It’s tough, but it’s a task that has to happen. Sometimes, to make the best fights in boxing, you have to take chances and risks and you have to do some things,” Charlo told Fight Hub TV via Boxing Social. “That is just the nature of this game. We want to continue to put on for the sport because fights like this make the sport of boxing very noticeable. We have to continue to do these things.”
Canelo is the -288 favorite (per Sports Interaction), but many have questioned his skills following hand surgery. At 33, he has sustained a lot of wear and tear, and training videos online have people questioning what he has left. However, nothing seems to bother Canelo, who told Premier Boxing Champions he’s feeling better than ever.
“I still feel young, fresh, and I never think about the end of my career,” Canelo said via Boxing Scene. “I just train and fight every year, and we’ll see. We’ll see in the future, but [I’m] still young. I feel great, I feel strong, and I feel [I’m at] my best.”
