In 2019, Anthony Yarde unsuccessfully challenged for light-heavyweight gold when he lost to Sergey Kovalev. Now, he will get a chance to redeem himself when he faces WBC, IBF, and WBO champion Artur Beterbiev on January 28.

The fight for three world titles will be inside Wembley Arena, in Yarde’s backyard in England.

Since the Kovalev fight, ”The Beast from the East" has gone 5-1, beating Lyndon Arthur for the Commonwealth and WBO Inter-Continental light-heavyweight titles in 2021. His last fight was a knockout win over Stefani Koykov in November, his 22nd win via the power punch.

Yarde is a massive underdog in this fight. Per BetMGM, Beterbiev is the -800 favorite, while Yarde is the +500 underdog. Despite that, Yarde is determined to get the job done. Tunde Ajayi, his trainer, believes in his fighter. A win could result in Yarde facing Canelo Alvarez or WBA light-heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol for the status of undisputed. For now, the duo will keep their focus on Beterbiev.

“…For this contest [against Beterbiev], if you’re not motivated to fight for three recognized belts – the first time ever a UK light-heavyweight has fought for three recognized belts – then I don’t know what will get you motivated,” Ajayi told The Ring. “We are totally motivated for the task at hand…His (Yarde’s) first world title was against arguably the best light-heavyweight at the time, and you could say that he’s doing it again. Both Russians. Nobody is willingly fighting these guys, but a young man with dreams and aspirations not once but twice is ready to take that, and I feel that’s so admirable and something I’ve known about him from the start. I was the first to see it.”

All of Beterbiev’s 18 wins have come via knockout. In 2017 he beat Enrico Kolling to win the IBF light-heavyweight title. He beat Oleksandr Gvozdyk in 2019 for the WBC title, and in his last fight in June, Beterbiev beat Joe Smith Jr. to win the WBO title.

For someone like Beterbiev, anyone in front of him is just another obstacle in his way. However, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t respect Yarde’s resume.

“I don’t know much about him,” Beterbiev told Boxing Scene. “We’ve watched several of his fights. He’s a good fighter, has good experience as a professional and he’s a boxer. He’s dangerous so, I have to prepare for this fight like I always do.”
