Utah vs. Oregon State analysis, player props and picks
Oregon State enters the game fresh off their first loss of the season last week, 38-35 against Washington State. It was the first actual test for the Beavers this season after beating San Jose State, UC Davis and San Diego State to start the season.
DJ Uiagalelei and the passing game struggled against the Cougars defense (17-34 for 198 yards, one touchdown and one interception). But the team's strength has been the defense and run game all season. Led by Deshaun Fenwick's 101 yards, Oregon State tallied 242 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.
The problem was a pass defense that could not stop Cameron Ward (28-34 for 404 yards and four touchdowns). But the Beavers rallied in the fourth quarter and made it interesting, scoring 21 points and closing the gap to three points.
The Beavers may not have to worry about their secondary against Utah, though. With Cam Rising still sidelined as he recovers from a torn ACL, the Utah passing game has been dreadful (157 YPG).
If they can't pass, how have they gone 4-0 to start the season? Easy — by relying on their run game (165 YPG) and defense. Opponents have averaged just 51 YPG on the ground and have scored just 9.5 PPG.
Those numbers benefitted from playing Weber State, but their other three opponents were all from Power 5 conferences: Baylor, Florida and UCLA.
Bet(s) to consider:
Under 44.5
Utah does not have a potent offense and will struggle to move the ball against a good Oregon State defense. The Beavers will lean hard on their run game while sprinkling in enough pass attempts to keep the Utes defense honest.
Oregon State will be content to chew up the clock via the run game, scoring enough to win a low-scoring, hard-hitting battle.
DJ Uiagalelei, passing yards
He could have some success passing against a mediocre Utah pass defense. But between the Utes pass rush and rushing attack chewing up the clock, he may not have the opportunity to throw enough to go over his total.
Consider the Under.
Damien Martinez, rushing yards
Martinez has rushed for more than 80.5 yards in every game this season. The Utah defense has been holding teams to around 50 YPG, but the Utes have yet to face a running back like Martinez.
Consider the Over.
Utah .
Consider taking Utah to win straight up, but only if you are convinced the Utes will start Cam Rising. Yes, he'll have to knock off some rust, but he's a solid veteran quarterback that will be able to exploit a suspect Oregon State secondary.
