In a rematch of last season's AFC Championship game, the Kansas City Chiefs host the Baltimore Ravens in the 2024 NFL season opener on Thursday, September 5.

Shortly after news of the game got out, the Chiefs were listed as a slight home favorite against the team it defeated 17-10 in this past season's AFC title game. Baltimore acquired RB Derrick Henry in the offseason while Kansas City added former Ravens WR Hollywood Brown.

Baltimore QB Lamar Jackson is the reigning NFL MVP. Kansas City QB Patrick Mahomes captured Super Bowl 58 MVP honors after the Chiefs defeated the 49ers, 25-22.

Baltimore Ravens betting news and analysis

The addition of Henry should help lighten the load on QB Lamar Jackson, who owns a 2-4 playoff record after the loss to Kansas City in the AFC Championship game.

Henry (8,268) has the most rushing yards in the NFL dating back to 2018 while Jackson owns the most among quarterbacks during that stretch with 5,258. Jackson led the Ravens with a team-high 821 yards on the ground last season.

Henry signed a two-year deal worth $16 million. Henry's reached the scary age of 30 for a running back, and he's taken as much or more punishment than any back in the NFL.

The Ravens captured the AFC North division title with a record of 13-4 last season. Baltimore also had the fourth best ATS record in the league at 12-7 including playoff games.

Baltimore lost two key linebackers on defense in Jadeveon Clowney (Panthers) and Patrick Queen (Steelers).

At BetMGM, the Ravens are the third betting favorite to win Super Bowl 59 at odds of +900. The Chiefs are the favorite at +550 and the 49ers follow at +600.

Kansas City Chiefs betting news and analysis

The Chiefs are 9-2 in Week 1 games under head coach Andy Reid. One of those two losses came in last year's season opener when the Lions upset the Chiefs, 21-20, at Arrowhead Stadium.

That marked the second straight loss by a Super Bowl champion in a season opener after the Bills beat the Rams, 31-10, the previous year.

Kansas City upgraded its wide receiving corps after the Chiefs led the NFL in dropped passes last season. The addition of Brown and Texas WR Xavier Worthy gives KC some insurance with the likely suspension of Rashee Rice for his off-field transgressions.

The Chiefs finished with the second-best ATS record in the NFL at 13-7-1 last season. That owed largely to their perfect performance in the postseason. The Chiefs were underdogs in three of those four games including the Super Bowl.

  • Chiefs 26 Dolphins 7 (-4.5)
  • Chiefs 27 Bills 24 (+2.5)
  • Chiefs 17 Ravens 10 (+4.5)
  • Chiefs 25 49ers 22 (+2)

Kansas City retained the services of its best defensive player in DT Chris Jones. Jones led the Chiefs with 10.5 sacks last season. He inked a five-year deal with $95 million in guaranteed money. The Chiefs lost top CB L'Jarius Sneed to the Titans during the offseason.

Ravens vs. Chiefs 2024 NFL season opener prediction

It's a little early for a prediction, but it's hard to envision Kansas City losing a second straight season opener at home. Mahomes and TE Travis Kelce are back to lead the Chiefs to what could potentially be a third consecutive Super Bowl win.

Pick: Kansas City -3
