The San Antonio Spurs open the 2023-24 NBA season at home against the Dallas Mavericks in one of the more anticipated tipoffs of NBA opening week. The second of two games on NBA Wednesday features Rookie of the Year favorite Victor Wembanyama's debut.

Wemby wowed in the preseason, even in limited minutes. Wembanyama averaged 19.3 PPG and 2.8 blocks per game in only 21 minutes across four preseason games.

The Mavericks are no slouches on the other side of this matchup, even though all the hype surrounds Wembanyama's NBA debut. The Mavericks have two of the top 30 players for the 2023-24 NBA season in Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. Acquiring Irving right before the trade deadline last season, the Mavs did not have time to get things together and narrowly missed qualifying for last season's playoffs.

Expectations are much higher with an entire season together this year for the star pairing of Doncic and Irving. If the Mavs stay healthy, there is no reason why they can't be one of the contenders in the NBA's Western Conference.

Dallas Mavericks betting news

The Mavericks will be the better of the two teams to take the floor in the second game of ESPN's NBA Wednesday doubleheader. While many will tune in initially to watch Wemby, Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving are likely to control this game and offer an early glimpse of a Mavs team that should be in contention all season.

The ceiling will be limitless for two of the best ball-handling and most creative scorers in all of the NBA this season. But, as with any team Kyrie Irving suits up for, the floor will be quite low. The Mavs took a significant risk and used a lot of assets to acquire and keep Irving, who at his best is one of the best players on the planet.

Early in the season, expect the Mavs to look great, and if Irving can keep the drama to a minimum, Dallas can be a contender.

San Antonio Spurs betting news

While most media attention in San Antonio has focused on Wembenyama, the Spurs are not without talent around the rookie big man. Keldon Johnson has improved yearly during his four-year career with the Spurs.

Johnson led the team in scoring last season. If he's healthy, expect him to do it again this year. It would not be surprising to see Johnson increase his scoring output (22 PPG last year) for the fifth straight season, especially with Wembenyama helping draw attention.

Add in Devin Vassell and Tre Jones making up an above-average guard pairing, and there is actually more talent than one might expect from a team that won the No. 1 pick in the NBA lottery. Adding a potential star in Wembenyama could help the Spurs fight for a playoff spot this season and, if Wemby realizes his potential, be a title contender in the years to come.

Mavericks vs. Spurs predictions: Mavs to spoil Wemby's debut

Expect Victor Wembenyama to have a few jaw-dropping moments in his NBA debut that flash what many think is future MVP talent. While that will delight those tuning in to see his debut, expect the Mavericks to spoil Wemby's first NBA game-winning to open the season.

The Spurs are excited about the future with good reason, but the Mavericks are the more talented and seasoned team heading into the 2023-24 NBA season.
