Rio Olympics 2016: Emma Coburn earns USA’s first medal in women’s steeplechase image

Emma Coburn came in third place in the women’s steeplechase Monday in Rio to become the first U.S. woman in Olympic history to medal in the event.

Coburn narrowly missed the silver. According to times posted on NBCOlympics.com, Coburn finished the race in 9:07.12 to earn bronze, fractions of a second behind second-place finisher, Hyvin Kiyeng Jepkemoi of Kenya. Coburn broke her own American record of 9:10.76.

Coburn, 25, is from Boulder, Colo.

Bahrain’s Ruth Jebet took gold on Monday, finishing way ahead of the field at 8:59.75.
