A new season of “Criminal Minds: Evolution” means the band is back together following a year away from our TV screens. Season 17 of Criminal Minds — or Season 2 of Evolution following the reboot — airs on June 6 on Paramount+.
“Criminal Minds: Evolution" is a revival of the 2005 series that ended in 2020 but returned in 2022 with Criminal Minds: Evolution season 1. The show stars Joe Mantegna, AJ Cook, Kirsten Vangsness, Aisha Tyler, Adam Rodriguez, and Paget Brewster as members of the Behavioral Analysis Unit, who use various forms of behavior analysis to attempt to find those known as unknown subjects.
Per TV Line, the new season “Investigates the mystery of Gold Star. As that conspiracy unfolds, the BAU will be met with an unexpected complication when Elias Voit (promoted series regular Zach Gilford) negotiates a deal that transfers him to federal custody — in the BAU’s own backyard!” The season will be without Josh Stewart, who played William LaMontagne Jr.
The timeline of the show airs two weeks after the season 16 finale. Before the new season, Elias Voit (Zach Gilford) was escorted onto an empty floor and greeted by a mystery figure. Showrunner Erica Messer believed not playing the waiting game was best for fans and the show.

“Part of it was how the timing actually worked out with our season ending in December of 2022, as far as we were concerned with production, and then the writer's room starting back up in January 2023,” Messer said to TV Line. “In our head, we were right there, and the story breaking the way it did, the season breaking the way it did, it felt like we were doing not quite a direct pick-up, but a couple weeks had gone by.
“That allowed Prentiss to sort of figure out what’s going on with this Gold Star mystery that she thinks had something to do with [FBI Deputy Director] Doug Bailey’s death. We didn’t want months to go by — that felt false, especially for this team who investigates in their sleep. Two weeks felt accurate, and then obviously the [WGA and SAG-AFTRA] strikes happened, and now we’re back shooting this a whole year later.”
