Controversial Australian star Nick Kyrgios will battle Chile's Cristian Garin in the Wimbledon quarter-finals for a place in the last four.

Kyrgios has matched his best-ever result at the All England Club - achieved on debut in 2014 - and will be looking to march on to the semi finals for a match-up against Rafael Nadal or Taylor Fritz.

In the Australian's way is clay-courter Garin, who is playing in a Grand Slam quarter final for the first time on a surface he was expected to struggle on.

The Sporting News has all the details on the tasty quarter-final contest.

Nick Kyrgios' recent form

It was an impressive win for Kyrgios over Nakashima as the Australian looked to be struggling with his level at times, but he still managed to lift when it mattered, particularly in the fifth set.

However, if the Aussie brings a similar level to the Garin match, or even the semi final if he gets through, he will struggle to be victorious against more experienced opponents.

Kyrgios hit an incredible 35 aces against Nakashima - continuing his exceptional serving performance throughout the tournament, with it being used a weapon to get him out of trouble time and time again.

The Canberran appeared to keep his emotions in check throughout the match, but that also coincided with being flat throughout as well - are the two connected?

His previous two performances prior to Nakashima showed that Kyrgios can win Wimbledon with his quality of tennis - it's just if his emotions get in the way.

Despite spending a large period of the third round match against Stefanos Tsitsipas in running battles with the umpire, line judges and even the Greek himself, the Australian world No.40 managed to win in four sets.

Kyrgios displayed an uncanny ability to serve his way out of trouble in the fourth set, finding himself 0-30 down in all of his last three service games, facing four break points including a set point across them.

However, the Canberran displayed incredible resilience, usually via his big serve, to keep Tsitsipas from getting a break and forcing the match to five sets.

Kyrgios' performance the previous round was an absolute demolition of 26th seed Filip Krajinovic, with the Aussie smashing an incredible 50 winners to 10 unforced errors, while only losing eight points on serve for the whole match.

Cristian Garin's recent form

It's safe to say unseeded clay-courter Garin was not expected to make it past the first round after being drawn against initial Wimbledon second-favourite Matteo Berrettini.

However, COVID-19 forced Berrettini to withdraw, allowing Garin to play lucky loser Elias Ymer in the first round, while opening up that quarter of the draw considerably.

The world No.43 comfortably accounted for Ymer and France's Hugo Grenier in straight sets across the first two rounds before facing a tricky encounter against up-and-coming American Jenson Brooksby.

Despite being an underdog, Garin comfortably dispatched Brooksby, albeit with a slight mid-match dip, to set up a meeting against Australia's 19th seed Alex de Minaur.

Again being expected to lose, the 26-year-old fought his way back from two-sets-to-love down to record one of the best wins of his career - and heartbreakingly deny Australians of a quarter final between Kyrgios and De Minaur.

Garin's quarter final run at Wimbledon is his best result at a major so far, bettering the fourth round he reached at the French Open and All England Club in 2021.

Can he go one better against Kyrgios?

Nick Kyrgios and Cristian Garin have never played each other before.

Kyrgios vs. Garin prediction

Just like most of Nick Kyrgios' matches on grass, the result is usually down to the performance of the Australian on the day.

The Kyrgios that came up against Tsitsipas and Krajinovic will steam roll Garin in straight sets, but the version that looked flat against Jubb and Nakashima will be up for a close contest.

Garin has performed admirably to reach the last eight but will be full of nerves on Wimbledon's centre court in the biggest match of his career.

The Chilean's best hope is to be solid on his own serve to frustrate Kyrgios, with the Australian's serve proving hard to break because of incredible serving form so far.

Kyrgios should get the job done against Garin to set up a semi-final against either Rafael Nadal or Taylor Fritz.

But we all know anything can happen during a Nick Kyrgios match.

Prediction: Kyrgios in four sets.
