The second grand slam of the year has begun as 2022 champions Novak Djokovic and Iga Swiatek head to Roland-Garros looking to defend their titles.

Rafael Nadal's withdrawal has left the men's field much more open, while world number one Swiatek looks like the player to beat in the women's draw.

This is a lonely year for British entries. Andy Murray pulled out shortly before the action started to better prepare for the grass-court season, while former US Open champion Emma Raducanu is injured, leaving just three of their compatriots involved when the draw began.

The Sporting News takes a look at the British players taking part in the singles tournament at the French Open.

Which British players are at the French Open?

Dan Evans

World number 25 Evans hit poor form at the wrong time coming in to the French Open, where he had never been beyond the first round.

The 20th seed's miserable run in Paris continued as he was beaten at the same stage in straight sets by wildcard Thanasi Kokkinakis.

Evans admitted his performance had been below-par from start to finish, hindered by a foot fault that appeared to swing the momentum of the match when he was a break up in the second set.

Cameron Norrie

Evans' exit has made hopes even higher for Norrie, the 14th seed overcame Benoit Paire, the world number 149, in five sets in the first round.

Norrie beat another Frenchman in Lucas Pouille in the second round before crashing out to Lorenzo Musetti in the third in straight sets.

Norrie's exit in the third round in 2022 matched his best ever finish at the tournament the previous year.

The 27-year-old has been the British men's number one since 2021 and gave his best ever showing in a grand slam at Wimbledon last year, reaching the semifinals.

Jack Draper

World number 55 Draper reached the quarterfinals in Lyon in the build-up to the French Open, losing to fourth seed Francisco Cerundolo after knocking out fifth seed Miomir Kecmanovic in the previous round.

At the age of 21, the Londoner was appearing in the main draw in the tournament for the first time but had to retire in the second set against his first-round opponent Tomas Etcheverry through injury. The Brit had already lost the first set 6-4.

Draper recorded wins over the likes of Dominic Thiem and Stefanos Tsitsipas in 2022, proceeding to beat Murray at Indian Wells this year.
