Cameron Norrie beats David Goffin in five-set thriller to reach Wimbledon 2022 semifinals image

Cameron Norrie admitted that adrenaline had carried him to victory after he became the first British player to reach a singles semifinal at Wimbledon since 2016 by beating David Goffin in five sets on Centre Court.

In another all-action display, Norrie recovered from losing the first and third sets to oust unseeded Goffin, who was inspired again, 3-6, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5.

The Grand Slam final four debutant was emotional as he looked ahead to a clash with top seed Novak Djokovic in the 2022 semifinals on Friday.

"I managed to stay as patient as I could," the 26-year-old told BBC Sport, having won six fewer points than his Belgian opponent but kept his nerve on his way to a gritty triumph.

"It was all adrenaline; I used my legs and tried to get the ball in the court. Winning a match like this — I'm in shock, I don't know what to say. All the sacrifices I've had to make have paid off."

The last British man to reach the semifinals at SW19, Andy Murray, went on to become champion, and Norrie will have to deny Djokovic a fourth successive title to keep his hopes of repeating that feat alive.

"I'm going to enjoy it and take it to him," Norrie said after the Serb recovered from two sets behind to beat Jannik Sinner earlier on Monday. "I'm looking forward to it. I'm so happy to get through with such a great family and team here."

Djokovic is on a run of 26 unbeaten matches at Wimbledon ahead of his meeting with the ninth seed, stretching back to 2017.

David Goffin 6-3 5-7 6-2 3-6 5-7 Cameron Norrie* — NORRIE WINS

Centre Court goes wild as Norrie survives deuce to reach the semifinals. An ace takes him within a point of victory, then Goffin passes him with an excellent forehand from the baseline - but two Goffin errors send him through. After a compelling contest with a cruel outcome for Goffin, Norrie is heading for a semifinal against Novak Djokovic on Friday.

David Goffin* 6-3 5-7 6-2 3-6 5-6 Cameron Norrie — NORRIE BREAKS

Norrie's determination to stay in the points pays off, Goffin looping a shot long and then brutally losing out after a drop shot exchange at close quarters. A long fourth point from Goffin leaves Norrie a game from victory and the crowd ecstatic. Could this be it?

David Goffin 6-3 5-7 6-2 3-6 5-5 Cameron Norrie*

Not for the first time, Norrie speeds through his service points on his way to staying in the match. Goffin unsuccessfully challenges an ace to make it 40-0, then puts his opponent on his heels with a huge forehand that is returned into the net. He's not as successful with a forehand down the line seconds later, and we're level once more.

David Goffin* 6-3 5-7 6-2 3-6 5-4 Cameron Norrie

Goffin makes a mockery of those aspersions of fatigue, mixing up a commanding service game to win to love while facing precious little pressure. He's a game away from a semifinal against Novak Djokovic.

David Goffin 6-3 5-7 6-2 3-6 4-4 Cameron Norrie*

Norrie initially continues to make his misfiring first service game of this set a fading memory, then recreates it to give Goffin hope at 40-30. Goffin can only loop Norrie's deciding serve tamely in front of the Briton, who sees a smash come back before winning with a forehand volley.

David Goffin* 6-3 5-7 6-2 3-6 4-3 Cameron Norrie

A line challenge proves pivotal as Goffin edges the back of the baseline with a shot to make it 30-15 after Norrie had been celebrating. Norrie follows up with an ace on second serve, and an exhilirating final point, featuring just about every shot possible from these players, ends with Norrie hitting the net with a drop shot. No let-up from the would-be first-time semifinalists.

David Goffin 6-3 5-7 6-2 3-6 3-3* Cameron Norrie

An ace gives Norrie the ideal start to the game, proceeding to hold to love via Goffin fizzing two backhands wide. Goffin perhaps looks like he's tiring more of the two, which could mean nothing in light of his resilience against hard-hitting Norrie so far.

David Goffin* 6-3 5-7 6-2 3-6 3-2 Cameron Norrie

Norrie wins his first point of the set on Goffin's serve, then benefits as the server hits the net cord and watches the ricochet spin wide. The scoreboards are on the blink here, but there's no doubt who wins the next three points, Norrie offering Goffin little to think about apart from a useful lob in the final point, which Goffin smashes away to his delight.

David Goffin 6-3 5-7 6-2 3-6 2-2 Cameron Norrie*

We're approaching two hours of gripping play in this combative match, Goffin perhaps showing a little of his exertions as he loops a shot from the baseline out of play, then races to the net to reach a drop shot which he skims into the net. An easier service game than his first for Norrie, who has run 20km less than Goffin so far.

David Goffin* 6-3 5-7 6-2 3-6 2-1 Cameron Norrie

Goffin sees out his service game considerably more comfortably than Norrie did, firing two aces on his way to holding to love. He was grimacing in pain because of apparent shoulder pain after the first point, but it doesn't seem to have unduly bothered him as he moves in front again.

David Goffin 6-3 5-7 6-2 3-6 1-1 Cameron Norrie*

The net tape saves Norrie from going 0-30 down with a double fault, then Goffin can only find the net from a Norrie smash and is beaten by an emphatic forehand down the line. Goffin slices a superb return to make it 30-30, then unleashes a forehand winner to earn a break point which he cannot take.

A lethal cross-court backhand gives Norrie advantage from a second deuce, seeing off the game when Goffin sends a forehand wide.

David Goffin* 6-3 5-7 6-2 3-6 1-0 Cameron Norrie

Norrie has been a slower starter in sets this evening but he pushes Goffin at the start of the fourth. A Goffin volley at the net bewilders Norrie, who sends a cross-shot wide, and a clattering rally between the pair finishes with a Norrie drop shot wobbling the net.

David Goffin* 6-3 5-7 6-2 3-6 Cameron Norrie — NORRIE WINS THE THIRD SET

Norrie was geeing the crowd up during that break of serve. He's in no mood to take his time now, racing to 40-0 before passing up two set points. Fans in the crowd have their hands over their mouths — but they've no need to fret as Norrie serves out the game. Fifth set, here we come.

David Goffin* 6-3 5-7 6-2 3-5 Cameron Norrie — NORRIE BREAKS

Prince William and British former contender Tim Henman are deep in conversation in the stands, and Norrie boosts their optimism by taking it to deuce. Goffin think he's won the game but Norrie challenges successfully, then wins his second break point by scampering onto a drop shot and scooping it across court and out of Goffins' reach. At last, a game that seemed to have everything ends with Goffin finding the net.

David Goffin 6-3 5-7 6-2 3-4 Cameron Norrie*

It would take some bravery to predict who's going to blink first in this set. A delightful drop shot takes Norrie to 40-15, then he repeats the trick, Goffin responding by sending his return long. Norrie has his fist out again, offering a couple of determined shouts in a set he must win to stay in this tournament.

David Goffin* 6-3 5-7 6-2 3-3 Cameron Norrie

Goffin comes to the net again and is wrong-footed by a Norrie backhand, then answers another winner with a backhand that narrowly drops in, drawing a fist pump from him. Both players go full-throttle from the baselines, Norrie winning a break point that he cannot take. Goffin holds from deuce.

David Goffin 6-3 5-7 6-2 2-2 Cameron Norrie*

Norrie nudges ahead again, surviving a spectacular Goffin winner at one point - a hallmark of most games in this match - and securing the game with a serve that Goffin cannot return with any purchase.

David Goffin* 6-3 5-7 6-2 2-2 Cameron Norrie

A glimmer of hope for Norrie at 30-30 extends to deuce. Goffin reacts with menace, smashing a winner and firing in a deciding serve that Norrie can only return into the net.

David Goffin 6-3 5-7 6-2 1-2 Cameron Norrie*

Norrie roars encouragement at the crowd after making it 30-30 following Goffin's latest baseline backhand winner, then thunders two forehands away in another draining-looking service game for the home player.

David Goffin* 6-3 5-7 6-2 1-1 Cameron Norrie

If Norrie could even convert half of his chances, he'd be making Goffin work much harder here. As it is, his range continues to desert him in front of a hushed Court No 1, winning a single point as Goffin holds with more help from the other side of the net.

David Goffin* 6-3 5-7 6-2 0-1 Cameron Norrie

The fourth set begins with a scintillating rally, Goffin's tight defence paying off after he successfully races to the net. Norrie wins two points comfortably, then spins a drop shot wide for his 34th unforced error, redeemed by two Goffin errors to hand him the game.

David Goffin* 6-3 5-7 6-2 Cameron Norrie — GOFFIN WINS THE THIRD SET

It's a routine hold for Goffin, Norrie again failing to find his range as he hangs a shot narrowly long at 40-15 to concede the third set.

Norrie is off for a toilet break, as well he might after winning only 46 percent of his first-serve points during that set, to Goffin's 82. The stats aren't much better for second serves: Goffin led 55-17.

David Goffin 6-3 5-7 5-2 Cameron Norrie* — GOFFIN BREAKS

Goffin looks frustrated with his entourage and has something to say to them as Norrie builds a 30-15 lead, then produces a scintillating backhand winner to draw level. The Belgian races to the net to fire a forehand past his opponent, who sends a routine shot long to hand back the momentum.

David Goffin* 6-3 5-7 4-2 Cameron Norrie — NORRIE BREAKS

Goffin gets lucky with a net cord and sees his opponent send a shot long, only for a double fault and two superb winners on Norrie's forehand and drop shot to take the game to deuce. Goffin then finds the net and is beaten by a bludgeoning Norrie winner from the baseline. His advantage is reduced to one break.

David Goffin 6-3 5-7 4-1 Cameron Norrie*

That's the tonic Norrie needs, racing into a 40-0 lead and serving out the game. He now needs to find two breaks quickly.

David Goffin* 6-3 5-7 4-0 Cameron Norrie

Norrie challenges a wide call at 15-15 and it's well wide. Even the crowd knew it was. Another shot ends up in the bottom of the net, and another, and Goffin holds comfortably for a 4-0 lead.

David Goffin 6-3 5-7 3-0 Cameron Norrie* — GOFFIN BREAKS

This set is suddenly running away from Norrie. Goffin is just too strong and too precise, setting up three break points and taking the first with a backhand passing shot after a net cord forces Norrie to the net.

David Goffin* 6-3 5-7 2-0 Cameron Norrie

Goffin's forehand once more puts him in control of a game. Just to mix things up, he dispatches a backhand winner after Norrie's return drops in the middle of the court. A second serve hits the line and skies off Norrie's racquet, giving Goffin a very impressive start to this set.

David Goffin 6-3 5-7 1-0 Cameron Norrie* — GOFFIN BREAKS

Goffin looked annoyed after letting that second set slip away, but his concentration hasn't faltered. Some loose Norrie strokes and a stunning Goffin return set up two break points, and Norrie whips a forehand wide to concede the break.

David Goffin* 6-3 5-7 Cameron Norrie — NORRIE WINS THE SECOND SET

Norrie breaks again and snatches the second set! Norrie flattens a backhand and Goffin can't get it back into play. The Belgian somehow digs out another one cross-court but Norrie puts the forehand away for two set points. A terrific return right onto the baseline mean Goffin can only plant the ball into the net, and the crowd get to their feet. We're level on Court 1!

David Goffin 6-3 5-6 Cameron Norrie*

This time, it's a love hold for Norrie, who seemed buoyed by some crowd chants just before he served there. These men will soon know who awaits them in the last four (once news filters through from Centre Court) — Novak Djokovic has come from two sets down to defeat Jannik Sinner 5-7 2-6 6-3 6-2 6-2. Because of course he has.

David Goffin* 6-3 5-5 Cameron Norrie

Norrie has certainly upped his game but Goffin is still playing superbly. Some tremendous hitting ends with a forehand winner and an ace levels the set at 5-5.

David Goffin 6-3 4-5 Cameron Norrie*

A smart challenge from Norrie and a better serve-forehand combination digs him out of trouble and gets the crowd noise up. He double-faults at game point but battles through to take the game with an unreturned serve.

David Goffin* 6-3 4-4 Cameron Norrie — NORRIE BREAKS

Well, well, well! Suddenly, Goffin plays his loosest game of the entire match. A poor forehand — probably the first he has hit all day — gives Norrie two break points, but he saves the first with two expert volleys after a net cord. Then, from nowhere, a double fault! We're back on serve.

David Goffin 6-3 4-3 Cameron Norrie* — GOFFIN BREAKS

This time, Goffin punishes more Norrie mistakes. That forehand just hasn't fired and Norrie finds himself 0-40 down, He changes things up with a drop shot but it lands too far from the net, giving Goffin a simple backhand winner.

David Goffin* 6-3 3-3 Cameron Norrie

Some precise hitting gives Goffin a routine hold to love — just what he would want after putting that pressure on the Norrie serve.

David Goffin 6-3 2-3 Cameron Norrie*

Norrie starts with a double fault and a wayward forehand, then comes a simple backhand that goes long and practically draws a gasp from the crowd. He saves three break points with some big serves and composed play at the net, but Goffin drags it back to deuce after a 28-shot rally in which both players ran more than 90 metres. When Goffin sends a backhand long at advantage Norrie, the Brit puffs out his cheeks — that was a big hold.

David Goffin* 6-3 2-2 Cameron Norrie

Norrie closes out the opening point at the net but Goffin's first serve proves too hot to handle. He slices a volley wide after a rare net approach but another serve-forehand one-two sees out the game.

David Goffin 6-3 1-2 Cameron Norrie*

Goffin scrambles around the baseline like a Yorkshire terrier to keep the point alive, but Norrie is starting to hit his marks. Another unreturned serve gives him a love hold and an early lead in this second set.

David Goffin* 6-3 1-1 Cameron Norrie

Shot of the match from Norrie as he lobs Goffin from deep off the backhand side, but it's 15-15 after another masterful shot from Goffin at the end of a long rally. The first Goffin double fault brings up 30-30, but Norrie can't apply the pressure, and it's a comfortable hold in the end.

David Goffin 6-3 0-1 Cameron Norrie*

Goffin is just gliding around the court right now, dragging Norrie from side to side to put immediate pressure on his serve. Norrie at last lands the first ace of the match, but two careless shots hand Goffin break point only for the Belgian to miss by inches at the end of a punishing rally. The longest game of the match so far ends with Norrie miscuing a return.

David Goffin* 6-3 Cameron Norrie — GOFFIN WINS THE FIRST SET

This time it's Goffin who misses when changing direction in the rally, but Norrie pulls a forehand long. A one-two punch on serve and another ferocious forehand bring up two set points for Goffin, and Norrie misses to the left again. It's Goffin who goes 1-0 up.

David Goffin 5-3 Cameron Norrie*

A super passing shot from Goffin takes him to within two points of the set, but suddenly Norrie finds his footing. He finishes off a point well at the net and rips a forehand winner for 40-30, before the ball flies off the Goffin frame on the baseline. Norrie, and the crowd, are waking up a bit.

David Goffin* 5-2 Cameron Norrie

It's a comfortable hold to love for Goffin, who seals the game with an ace that sends up a puff of white. You wouldn't think it was he who'd played the most tennis at these championships.

David Goffin 4-2 Cameron Norrie* — GOFFIN BREAKS

It's Goffin who looks the more comfortable at the moment. Norrie challenges a (rather poor) line call but another backhand from the Belgian forces an error from the home favourite. But the radar on that forehand is certainly off, as three consecutive misses from that wing lets Goffin get to deuce. Another catches the middle of the net chord and we have our first break point of the contest, and just as Norrie thinks he's hit a winner on the run, it turns out it dropped wide. Advantage Goffin in this set.

David Goffin* 3-2 Cameron Norrie

We've already seen a few second serves returned straight into the net — Norrie's forehand in particular looks a little tight. Another well-timed backhand, and another second-serve return in the net, gives Goffin a hold to love.

David Goffin 2-2 Cameron Norrie*

A lot has been made of Norrie's fitness levels these days but Goffin is moving very well for a man who played five hours of tennis on Sunday. He misses from a Norrie drop shot but a fine return has the Brit on the backfoot, albeit briefly, as it proves another comfortable hold.

David Goffin* 2-1 Cameron Norrie

Three loose shots from Norrie let Goffin recover for 40-15. The Belgian then sends a forehand into the tramlines and Norrie delivers a brutal forehand for deuce at the end of a long rally. Goffin's first serve seems to be deserting him but a Norrie miss and a couple of well-angled shots means we stay on serve.

David Goffin 1-1 Cameron Norrie*

These early baseline exchanges are going Norrie's way. He forces two errors from Goffin before changing things up with a drop shot for 40-0. A super cross-court backhand levels up the scores.

David Goffin* 1-0 Cameron Norrie

Goffin sends a backhand long for 15-15, but two big first serves set up game point. A decent early rally ends with Goffin slapping a forehand into the net, but a fine backhand sees him through the opening game.

3.52 p.m.: The warm-ups are just being concluded. We're ready for play here. It's Goffin vs. Norrie for the semifinals!

3.38 p.m.: BBC footage has just shown Norrie leaving the practice courts, so we're not far from this one getting underway.

3.27 p.m.: Tatjana Maria has just won a gruelling three-set quarterfinal against compatriot Jule Niemeier, so Goffin vs. Norrie will be up next on Court 1.

3.15 p.m.: Jannik Sinner now leads Djokovic by two sets to love on Centre Court! We could be in for a major shock today.

3.05 p.m.: Norrie is bidding to become only the second British player — after Andy Murray, of course — to win the men's singles title at Wimbledon since the 1930s. There's still a fair way to go to achieve that dream, though.

Goffin is hoping to reach his first major semifinal, at the age of 31.

2.50 p.m.: Norrie produced a superb display to defeat 30th seed Tommy Paul in the previous round. His opponent today, meanwhile, came through a marathon five-set encounter with Frances Tiafoe.

The winner will face either defending champion Novak Djokovic or 10th seed Jannik Sinner in the last four. Sinner is at least part way to springing a shock in their quarterfinal, having recovered from 4-1 down to take the opening set 7-5.

2.30 p.m.: Goffin vs. Norrie is second on Court No.1 today. The match will take place after the women's quarterfinal between Tatjana Maria and Jule Niemeier, which is in the latter stages of the second set.

2:20 p.m: It's men's quarterfinal day at Wimbledon 2022 and the home crowd have a new hero to cheer. Cameron Norrie takes to Court 1 for the first time at this stage of a Grand Slam and will face the former world No.7 David Goffin, who emerged victorious from a five-set marathon against Frances Tiafoe in the last round.
