Casper Ruud vs. Karen Khachanov odds, betting trends, predictions, preview for US Open semi-final image

Casper Ruud and Karen Khachanov will do battle in the first men's singles semi-final of the 2022 US Open.

Prior to this year, neither player had ever made it past the third round at Flushing Meadows.

Ruud made it to the final of French Open earlier this year but was beaten in straight sets by Roland Garros legend Rafael Nadal.

This is already Khachanov's best performance at a Grand Slam event in 2022 with his best previous run coming at the French Open when he reached the fourth round.

These two players have only ever played once before with Ruud winning 6-3 3-6 6-1 at the Italian Open in 2020.

The Sporting News has all the details on what promises to be a blockbuster semi-final.

Casper Ruud vs. Karen Khachanov form and betting trends

On paper, Ruud comes into this match as a strong favourite.

The Norwegian is the US Open's fifth-seed, made the French Open final in June and beat Khachanov in their sole game to date.

While Ruud hasn't been perfect at Flushing Meadows this year, he put in his best performance last time out to defeat Matteo Berrettini 6-1 6-4 7-6 (4).

In his three previous matches Ruud had dropped a set but he was at his clinical best against the Italian.

Khachanov, meanwhile, arrived at the US Open this year having narrowly secured a seeding (27) and was drawn into fierce five-set battles across his past two matches.

The Russian came from a set down to beat 12th-seed Pablo Carreno Busta before then holding off a red-hot Nick Kyrgios in the quarter-finals

Khachanov's form coming into the US Open didn't suggest he was primed for a deep run with the 26-year-old losing three of his final five matches before the tournament.

But he has quickly shown he has the ability to play some brilliant tennis with his strong serve looming as a big weapon against Ruud.

Casper Ruud vs. Karen Khachanov preview & prediction

While Ruud triumphed in the only previously match involving the pair, that encounter came on clay, with the hard court likely to favour Khachanov.

The Russian is far more powerful than the Norwegian, standing 15 centimetres taller, and will prove a hard man for Ruud to break.

Khachanov produced 30 aces against Kyrgios in his last match, while Ruud didn't deliver any in his win against Berrettini.

Serving aside, Ruud does have recent experience going this deep into a Grand Slam event and may be better poised to handle the occasion.

Based on their previous matches so far at the US Open, expect this semi-final to go the distance.

Prediction: Khachanov to win in five sets
