The Premier League 2022/23 season wrapped up its final day, handing down the final two verdicts in the relegation battle and the race for European places.
Everton got the win they needed to stay up thanks to an Abdoulaye Doucoure goal in the second half, though it wasn't all smooth sailing.
When Leicester took the lead in their match, Everton fans were momentarily grappling with the scenario they could be going down, until Doucoure sent Goodison Park into a frenzy. A key Jordan Pickford save in stoppage time prevented a late Bournemouth goal which would've sent Everton down.
Going down to the Championship with Southampton will be Leeds United and former Premier League champions Leicester City. A leaky defense cost Leeds once again on the final day against Spurs, a 3-1 loss that was a microcosm of their season. And Leicester fell agonisingly short of safety, leaving their supporters puzzled on the rapid decline of their club.
Aston Villa nabbed the final European place by virtue of their home win over Brighton. That secured 7th place and a spot in the Conference League in 2023/24 for a team that was once in the relegation zone. Villa finished ahead of Spurs and Brentford, who both finished out of Europe.

Premier League final day live updates, highlights
Full-time
Final: And that's it. The Abdoulaye Doucoure goal was enough to keep Everton up. Leicester put themselves in position to stay up, but the Everton win ended their hopes. Jordan Pickford made a stoppage-time save that salvaged the win.
Aston Villa's win clinched 7th place and Unai Emery capped a sensational managerial performance to lift the Villans from the relegation places to Europe.
Brentford finished their season by doing the double on Man City. Meanwhile, Arsenal thumped Wolves, Roberto Firmino scored in his final Liverpool appearance, and Harry Kane reached the 30-goal mark.
85th: As long as Everton win, they're safe. As long as Villa win, they earn the Conference League spot. We're down to the final five minutes of the season.
78th: SOU-LIV, ARS-WOL goals. Liverpool have made it 4-4 at St. Mary's, while Arsenal have hit for five against Wolves.
66th: LEI-WHU goal. A Wout Faes goal means that Leicester are well on their way to doing their part and winning the game. But they'll need Bournemouth to score against Everton to stay up. They need Everton to drop points.
Southampton extended their lead against Liverpool, Arsenal added another as well, Man United went ahead over Fulham, and Crystal Palace level in a game against Forest that means little.
60th: EVE-BOU goal. It's Abdoulaye Doucoure who blasts a shot from the top of the box and they would be safe should this result hold, with Leicester and Leeds going down.
49th: LEE-TOT goal. It's looking bleak for Leeds, who are now down 2-0 at home to Spurs after a Pedro Porro goal. It appears that Leeds will join Southampton and one other team down to the Championship.
48th: SOU-LIV goal. The first goal of the second half belongs to Southampton, who overturn a 2-0 deficit at home to go up 3-2.
Half-time
Half-time: As things stand, it's Leicester City who would be safe (thanks to the Harvey Barnes goal) with Everton and Leeds going down, while Aston Villa cling to the final Conference League berth.
It was noteworthy in that first half that Harry Kane scored again (No. 29 on the season), and that Roberto Firmino got one in his final match for Liverpool.
43th min.: AVL-BRI goal. Deniz Undav scores for Brighton on a delicious ball from Julio Enciso, and Aston Villa are not in the clear yet in their quest for Europe.
36th min.: LEI-WHU goal. Harvey Barnes puts Leicester up 1-0 and with Everton's 0-0 draw, it's Everton going down at this juncture with Leeds.
30th min.: SOU-LIV, ARS-WOL, CHE-NEW goals. They're free scoring in the games that don't have any standings implications, while Aston Villa have locked down their match against Brighton with a 2-0 lead.
17th min.: ARS-WOL, SOU-LIV goals. Arsenal take a quick two-goal lead courtesy of Granit Xhaka, while Roberto Firmino nets a goal in his final game to double Liverpool's lead.
10th min.: CHE-NEW, SOU-LIV goals. In matches that doesn't have any serious bearing on the table, Anthony Gordon has the opening goal for the Magpies and Diogo Jota nets for Liverpool.
8th min.: AVL-BRI goal. Aston Villa take the lead over Brighton on a Douglas Luiz goal. And a victory for them would secure them the Conference League spot.
2nd min.: We have kickoff at all the grounds. And there's an early goal for Leeds with Harry Kane scoring right away.
20 mins to KO: Here's what Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag said about Antony's absence.
🚨🇧🇷 Erik ten Hag on Antony: "We've all seen how he came off and it didn't look great but the first assessment is not too bad and there's a good chance he's available for the final next week."
— UtdPlug (@UtdPlug) May 28, 2023
20 mins to KO: Liverpool give a final start to James Milner and Bobby Firmino, who will be moving on at season's end. Meanwhile, Leeds look to be going to a five-man backline against Spurs.
30 mins to KO: Bournemouth are missing Neto, Joe Rothwell, and Hamed Traore, but Philip Billing and Dango Ouattara are back and they are players who can make an impact against Everton.
Meanwhile, here's the scene outside Goodison Park:
