The 2019 edition of the Rugby World Cup was claimed by organisers to have been the most viewed event in the history of the sport.

More than 857 million viewers around the world are said to have tuned in, with a peak in Japan of almost 55 million seeing the host nation reach the quarterfinals for the first time by beating Scotland.

The 2023 tournament will be held in France and will seek to build on the 26% increase in global viewers the 2019 finals recorded on the previous edition.
