Two sides having contrasting end-of-year campaigns face off in Genoa, as South Africa meet Italy in the third match of their autumn tour.
These sides have plenty of experience when it comes to success and failure, but the historical form guide has been flipped on its head, as the Springboks, yet to win this autumn, face an unbeaten Italy side who last week toppled Australia for the first time in their history.
Italy's historic win over Australia was a close-run match to say the least, with Wallaby debutant Ben Donaldson missing the crucial conversion from Caderyn Neville's last-gasp try that would have swung the scoreboard back in their favour. Alas, he was unable to notch the two points, meaning Italy hung on to win 28-27, although the Azzurri should arguably have already been out of sight, with Tommaso Allan kicking just 10 of the 18 points on offer to him, missing a conversion and half of his four penalty attempts.
🙌 How good were those scenes in Florence 🇮🇹

It's been a tale of tight scorelines and late tries for South Africa, too, but in both of their matches this autumn, they've ended up on the losing side. A lacklustre first hour in Dublin saw the Springboks trail Ireland 16-6 with 15 minutes remaining, and despite two late tries from Franco Mostert and Kurt-Lee Arendse, missed conversions coupled with a late Johnny Sexton penalty saw Ireland take the spoils with a 19-16 win.
Their follow-up match against was just as tight, as the sell-out crowd in Marseille bore witness to a fantastic match, featuring drama from the first whistle. Pieter-Steph du Toit's illegal and frankly dangerous clear-out in a ruck saw the 2019 international player of the year sent off with just 12 minutes gone, while 2021 winner Antoine Dupont also saw red after taking out a flying Cheslin Kolbe in mid-air. Red cards aside, it was a fantastic match, with Sipili Falatea's late score and Thomas Ramos' penalty settling matters for France in the dying minutes.

The Italians will be wary that despite beating Australia, the world champions are an entirely different proposition to face, and the fact that South Africa have lost both their games this autumn will only add fuel to the fire in Genoa. However, Italy's management of high-stake situations seems to get better by the game, and if they're still in the arm wrestle approaching full-time, don't be surprised to see them pull off yet another shock.
Try of the Round goes to a @federugby player for the second week in a row! 🇮🇹

Italy vs. South Africa lineups
Hot-stepping full-back Ange Capuozzo crossed for two tries against the Wallabies, finishing off a brilliant passing move through the hands in the first half before dummying and darting to the line to put Italy within touching distance of victory in the second. He retains his place at the back, as does Pierre Bruno, who scored the opener against Australia after crossing twice against Samoa the week prior.
Talismanic fly-half Paolo Garbisi pulled out of the team just prior to kick-off against Australia, with Tommaso Allan starting in his place. Garbisi is still not fit enough to face the Springboks, meaning Allan again wears the No. 10 jersey, with Garbisi's place in the squad taken by Edoardo Padovani. His late penalty gave Italy their crucial six-point lead against Australia, and Padovani is joined amongst the replacements by Garbisi's younger brother Alessandro, who didn't make it off the bench in Florence.

It's a much-changed Springboks side following their ill-disciplined loss to France in Marseille. Pieter-Steph du Toit is banned for this game, while Deon Fourie, who came off the bench for Kwagga Smith, was sin-binned for the final 10 minutes, giving France a one-man advantage as they turned the game around. Franco Mostert shifts from lock to the back row, while Smith reverts back to the bench in Fourie's place, with late withdrawal Jasper Wiese back in the No.8 jersey after missing the clash against France.
Wingers Cheslin Kolbe and Kurt-Lee Arendse had mixed fortunes in Marseille, with Kolbe being recklessly tackled in mid-air by Antoine Dupont early in the second half. This awful challenge saw Dupont sent off and Kolbe forced off for a concussion check, but the Toulon speedster has been passed fit to start this match. Arendse crossed for the Springboks' only try of the second half just three minutes later, but Falatea's late score ripped the game from their grasp. Both players will be hoping for more success this time out, both in terms of their exploits out wide, and on the scoreboard.
South Africa XV: Willie le Roux, Cheslin Kolbe, Damian de Allende, Andre Esterhuizen, Kurt-Lee Arendse, Damian Willemse, Faf de Klerk; Ox Nche, Bongi Mbonambi, Frans Malherbe, Salmaan Moerat, Marvin Orie, Siya Kolisi, Franco Mostert, Jasper Wiese
