Australian golf legend Greg Norman is planning a sensational one-off comeback at this year's British Open.

The 67-year-old has been retired from professional golf since 2009, but he revealed in an exclusive interview with News Corp that he wanted to play in the 2022 major at St  Andrews, which will be the milestone 150th edition of the famous event.

"I'm filling out the entry form now [for the British Open]," Norman said. "I think I'm going.

"It's the 150th, I'm a past Open champion, I love St  Andrews.

"If there's a moment in time that I would consider going back and teeing off one last time, maybe this is it."

Norman had great success at the British Open during his career, winning the event in 1986 and 1993 and recording 10 top-10 finishes during his 27 starts at St  Andrews between 1977 and 2009.

With British Open organisers stating currently that no wild cards would be awarded for the event, Norman would likely have to get into the main field via qualifying.

However, a special provision might be created for the Shark, given his legendary status in the game, his pedigree as a previous winner of the event and the fact it's a special edition of the tournament.

Norman has been in the headlines in recent weeks, with his support for a Saudi Arabian Super Golf League as chief executive of the competition causing controversy.

The Shark himself believes his involvement in the proposed new Middle Eastern league cost him an invite to the Masters Tournament.

"I normally get an invitation every January when they go out as a past major-winner," Norman said. "Not this time. Although they did send me a grounds pass on the night before the first round.

"Look, I'll be honest with you: Yes, the criticisms have stung a little bit.

"But I'm a big believer that you can't run through a brick wall without getting bloody. I'm willing to run through this wall because I'm a big believer in growing the game of golf on a global basis."
