Olympics track and field Day 8 results: Sha'Carri Richardson, Rai Benjamin among gold-medal winners image

Day 8 of the Olympics' slate of track and field events proved a captivating watch for the masses, with some of the world's greatest athletes showing out — or falling flat — on the world's biggest stage.

Among those to conjure up magic across the track was American sprint star Sha'Carri Richardson, whose 10.09s split in the 4x100m relay was enough to secure a gold for the United States. Richardson has always been considered one of the country's finest track stars. On Friday, she showcased her talent on the world stage, bursting like a cannon to overtake Daryll Neita and Great Britain for the top spot on the podium.

A similar occurrence took place for American hurdler Rai Benjamin, who bested his longtime rival, Norway's Karsten Warholm, to claim gold in the 400m hurdles. Benjamin faltered in the event in Tokyo, ending his 2021 Olympics in tears after placing second behind the nightmarish Norwegian. On Friday, he cut a composed figure, however, warding off Warholm's frightening pace on the opening 200m then kicking into gear in the race's final paces to secure the win. He now cements his spot as one of the finest-ever hurdlers.

Not everything was quite as smooth as Richardson's and Benjamin's runs, however. USA's 4x100m men's relay team was disqualified from their final meet, a faulty baton swap spelling disaster for the Americans in the cursed event (again). Canada took advantage, with sprint legend Andre De Grasse securing the country's second-ever gold in the event.

All told, Friday's festivities were nothing if not eye-catching. With precious few events remaining, now is the time to be cherishing the athletic marvels one gets to witness on a nightly basis. Perhaps that will make this year's epic Olympic Games linger a little while longer in the eyes of those who have been following along.

Live track and field updates, highlights from 2024 Olympics

3:48 p.m.: Benjamin takes gold! He holds off Warholm in the opening 200 meters then kept his composure in the final stretch, while Warholm faltered. He redeems himself for his silver medal showing in the 2021 Olympics with a gold in Paris!

3:45 p.m.:  The crown jewel of tonight's slate of events — the men's 400m hurdles final — is on the horizon. Should be an enticing watch between Norway's Karsten Warholm, USA's Rai Benjamin and Brazil's Alison dos Santos.

3:30 p.m.: Additional gold medals in the men's triple jump and women's 10,000m, with Spain's Jordan Diaz and Kenya's Beatrice Chebet taking the top prize in their respective events.

2:40 p.m.: Plenty of interest in the women's shot put final. And for good reason. In the end, it's Germany's Yemisi Ogunleye who takes home the gold, recording an event-best mark of 20 meters.

2:10 p.m.: Is there really any surprise? Dominican Republic's Marileidy Paulino takes home the women's 400m gold with a stunning 48.15s time, a new Olympic record!

1:51 p.m.: USA men's loses again, suffering from a sloppy pass between Coleman and Bednarek! Canada takes gold with Andre De Grasse anchoring the side! The U.S. will be disqualified for its showing!

1:47 p.m.: Next up: the men's 4x100m final. Fred Kerley, Kenny Bednarek, Christian Coleman and Kyree King look to bring home USA men's first gold in the event since 2000.

1:34 p.m.: Richardson takes home the gold for Team USA! Thomas struggled with the pass to Richardson, but she bailed the U.S. out with her eye-catching speed. Sha'Carri Richardson, Gabby Thomas, Twanisha Terry and Melissa Jefferson are gold medalists in the 4x100m relay!

1:33 p.m.: And we're off! Melissa Jefferson flying up the track but Great Britain impressing.

1:30 p.m.: The women's 4x100m relay final is just moments away. The United States will be hoping for a strong showing, with Gabby Thomas and Sha'Carri Richardson spearheading a daunting American side that looks capable of snatching gold. The quartet looked impressive during prelims. Now, they'll hope to repeat their success on the world's grandest stage.

6:10 a.m.: Impressive showing for the Americans in the women's 100m hurdles semifinals, with Alaysha Johnson and Grace Stark recording the first- and third-best times during the round, respectively. They were joined in the top-three by Puerto Rican Jasmine Camacho-Quinn.

5:45 a.m.: Kenyan Emmanuel Wanyonyi took home the semifinal crown in the men's 800m, outgunning American Bryce Hoppel to lead the pack out for the 800m final.

Wanyonyi and Hoppel appear the most likely candidates for gold, with the pair dropping 1:43.32 and 1:43.41 times, respectively. However, expect Brit Max Burgin (1:43.41) and defending world champion Marco Arop to be in contention, as well.

5:15 a.m.: Quincy Wilson, the 16-year old who runs at Bullis High School, made his Olympic debut on Friday morning, posting a 47.27s split for USA's 4x400m team in Round 1. With his run, he became the U.S.'s youngest-ever track and field participant.

The United States will compete for a gold medal after recording the third-best time during the round. It's still some distance away from Letsile Tebogo and Botswana, however, who clocked in with a field-best 2:57.76 time.

5:00 a.m.: Team USA starts the day with a flourish, as the Americans record the best time in the first round of the women's 4x400m relay. Quanera Hayes, Shamier Little, Aaliyah Butler and Kaylyn Brown are headed to the finals. And they did so with relative ease, finishing their race three seconds faster than second-place Great Britain.
