MacKenzie Weegar contract details: Flames give newest defenseman an eight-year extension image

Defenseman MacKenzie Weegar and the Flames have agreed to an eight-year, $50 million contract extension, the team announced Wednesday. The deal carries an AAV of $6.25 million.

Weegar was a part of the deal that sent RFA forward Matthew Tkachuk to the Panthers. In addition to Weegar, the Flames also acquired star forward Jonathan Huberdeau, who was signed to an eight-year extension earlier this offseason.

The 28-year-old blue liner was going to be a UFA next summer but instead, he is locked into Calgary's future.

Weegar has developed into one of the premiere two-way defensemen in the league. He played primarily alongside Aaron Ekblad in Florida, recording 44 points last season with eight goals and 36 assists.

The Flames were one of the best defensive teams in hockey, as their 2.51 goals allowed per game was the third-lowest mark in the league. Adding Weegar to a group that already has Noah Hanifin, Chris Tanev and Rasmus Andersson gives Calgary one of the deepest D-cores in the NHL.

Considering the Flames were able to not only acquire Weegar and Huberdeau in the Tkachuk trade but also extend them as well makes the deal even better for GM Brad Treliving and the Flames.

Weegar's contract extension is for the maximum eight years, carrying an AAV of $6.25 million. In total, Weegar will earn $50 million over the course of the deal.

The defenseman is in the final season of a three-year contract he signed in 2020 with the Panthers. The extension will not start until the 2023-24 season and will run until the summer of 2031.

He has a full no-trade clause in the first four years and a modified no-trade clause in the back four.

MacKenzie Weegar stats

Weegar's points production has never stood out. Ekblad racked up more of the points along the blue line in Florida while Weegar sat back and manned his own zone.

However, he has out up back-to-back 30+ assist seasons and should be a consistent 40-point scorer in Calgary.
