Ronnie Hillman, a former NFL running back who was the leading rusher on the Broncos' Super Bowl 50-winning team, has died at 31.
Hillman's family announced his death in an Instagram post on Hillman's account Thursday.
"It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved son, brother & father, Ronnie K Hillman Jr.," the family wrote. "Ronnie quietly and peacefully transitioned today in the company of his family and close friends."
Hillman had been battling an aggressive form of cancer — renal medullary carcinoma, which affects the kidneys — since August. He had been placed in hospice care after catching pneumonia, as his former teammates Orlando Franklin and Derek Wolfe announced Wednesday.
"It's not looking good," Wolfe told Denver's 104.3 The Fan on Wednesday. "He has pneumonia and I'm putting it out there just to send positive vibes his way."
Wolfe added that he loved playing with Hillman during their time together with the Broncos.
"Great football player, great person, great teammate, just an all-around great dude," he said.
Hillman played five NFL seasons after being a third-round pick out of San Diego State at just 20 years old. His best campaign came in 2015, when he led the Broncos in regular-season rushing yards with 863 and scored seven touchdowns.
Denver won Super Bowl 50 during Hillman's career year, and the Broncos provided a statement shortly after his death about what he meant to the team.
We are deeply saddened by the untimely passing of former Denver Broncos running back Ronnie Hillman. A key contributor to the winningest four-year period in franchise history, Ronnie was part of two Super Bowl teams and led the Broncos in rushing during our Super Bowl 50 championship season. Soft-spoken with a warm smile and quiet intensity, Ronnie was drafted by the Broncos in 2012 and grew into a dynamic player and well-respected teammate. He will be fondly remembered by our organization, which extends its heartfelt sympathies and condolences to the Hillman family during this difficult time.
Plenty of tributes to Hillman from NFL fans — former teammates and media who covered him — poured in after his death.
Rest in Peace Ronnie! My prayers go out to his family! Continue to watch over us King! #Aztecs4Life pic.twitter.com/L4VwTWd2bb

Ronnie Hillman led the 2015 Broncos in rushing yardage & TDs. Demaryius Thomas led the team in receiving yardage. In the game that clinched the No. 1 seed they had the opening & closing TDs.

Ronnie Hillman was the definition of an undiscovered gem as a nothing-ranked HS prospect in the late 2000s. Was a bad ass at San Diego St and only needed two years to prove it.
