Eagles' QB depth chart: Gardner Minshew set to take over if Jalen Hurts misses time with injury image

A nearly perfect season for Jalen Hurts and the Eagles has hit a major bump in the road.

Hurts suffered a sprained shoulder in Philadelphia's 25-20 win over the Bears on Sunday, according to multiple reports. It's unclear how long the injury will keep him sidelined, but the consensus seems to be he is doubtful to play against the Cowboys this weekend.

Hurts has been the driving force behind the Eagles' spectacular season so far. He is averaging 300 total yards and 2.5 total touchdowns per game and finds himself right in the thick of the MVP race. If he has to miss time, it would be a huge loss.

So who is next up at quarterback for Philly? Here's a look at the team's depth chart under center:

Eagles QB depth chart

1. Jalen Hurts

Obviously, Hurts is No. 1. He's been one of the best offensive players in the NFL this season and has a strong case for MVP provided he doesn't miss too much time down the stretch.

He's reportedly now dealing with a sprained shoulder on his throwing (right) arm. His status is "in doubt" for Sunday's game in Dallas, per John Clark of NBC Sports Philadelphia. The good news for Eagles fans: Clark says the injury shouldn't affect him into the playoffs and isn't considered serious. With that said, it appears likely he'll miss at least one game and possibly more.

2. Gardner Minshew

The fourth-year quarterback is in line to make his third start as an Eagle against the Cowboys on Saturday.

His two previous starts both came in 2021. The first was in a 33-18 win against the Jets in Week 13, when he went a spectacular 20 of 25 through the air with 242 yards, 2 touchdowns and a 133.7 passer rating. The second was in a less impressive 51-26 loss to the Cowboys in which he finished 19 of 33 with 186 yards, 2 touchdowns and 1 interception.

He does have two years of experience as the Jaguars' starter under his belt, but he lost his last 8 games in a row for the team. He went a combined 7-16 as a starter in his time in Jacksonville.

3. Ian Book

If Minshew were to suffer an injury as well, the only other option on the active roster is Ian Book. The former Notre Dame star is in his second year in the NFL, and his first with the Eagles.

Book was drafted by the Saints in 2021, and was forced into action as their starter in Week 16 last year. He finished the game 12 of 20 with 135 passing yards, 0 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. He was waived by New Orleans in August 2022 before being claimed by Philly just one day later.
