Cowboys vs. Steelers final score, results: Dak Prescott completes 'Sunday Night Football' comeback with late TD drive image

In a highly anticipated meeting between two famed NFL franchises on Sunday night, it was the Cowboys that came out on top.

After a lengthy weather delay pushed kickoff on “Sunday Night Football” back over an hour, Dallas used a go-ahead touchdown connection between Dak Prescott and Jalen Tolbert with 20 seconds remaining to topple Pittsburgh 20-17.

The two defenses dominated the matchup in the first half, as neither team scored a touchdown in the first two quarters. The Cowboys took a 6-3 lead into halftime, struggling to finish their drives as Prescott finished with two interceptions and a lost fumble — as well as an unpleasant sideline confrontation with WR CeeDee Lamb.

However, Dallas' offense came through when it mattered most. It scored its first touchdown of the night early in the fourth quarter thanks to Rico Dowdle, and despite Pittsburgh taking a late lead on a Pat Freiermuth touchdown, the Cowboys stormed down the rain-soaked field at Acrisure Stadium, using their final chance, a fourth-and-goal play, to take the lead.

The Steelers' defense remained tough in all four quarters though, and T.J. Watt recorded 1.5 sacks on Prescott. Offensively, Pittsburgh did manage two touchdowns, but its run game was mostly ineffective. Justin Fields threw for just 131 yards, though he did manage a turnover-free outing.

Despite Mike Tomlin's squad coming into Week 5 just four points against the Colts away from being undefeated, it's now dropped to 3-2 this season in a tough AFC North. Dallas, now 3-2, needed a win for momentum purposes, as it's dealt with various injuries lately and now approaches matchups against three of the NFC's best teams in Detroit, San Fransisco, and Atlanta.

The Sporting News tracked live updates and highlights from Sunday night's matchup between the Cowboys and Steelers, two of the most historic franchises in the NFL. Here’s what you may have missed.

Who won the Cowboys vs. Steelers game?

All times ET

1:00 a.m. — That'll do it. The Steelers try to work a miracle with some laterals, but Dallas ends the play and secures a win. It was a last-minute comeback for the Cowboys on the road against a tough Steelers team, a huge win for their momentum moving forward.

12:57 a.m— Pittsburgh gets the ball back without any timeouts to use and down by three. This is now Monday morning football, and the Steelers are down to their final chances after the huge Prescott-to-Tolbert touchdown.

Cowboys 20, Steelers 17

12:51 a.m. TOUCHDOWN — The game comes down to a 4th & Goal on the four-yard line, and Prescott comes through. He finds Jalen Tolbert near the front of the end zone for a massive score, giving Dallas the lead on the road with just 20 seconds remaining.

12:50 a.m. — Prescott comes up just short of a rushing touchdown, so on 2nd & Goal, the Cowboys give the ball to Dowdle. He nearly fumbles the game away, but Prescott jumps on the ball to keep the Cowboys alive for another play. Either way, the forced fumble prevented Dowdle from giving Dallas the lead.

12:45 a.m. — On 3rd & 9, Prescott comes up huge with a 10-yard completion to Ferguson, then sets up Hunter Luepke for an 18 yard-gain that results in 1st & Goal. This game is being set up for an exciting finish.

12:42 a.m. — At the two-minute warning, Dallas is at Pittsburgh's 33-yard line. Dowdle continues to run well, and Prescott has made some nice short-yardage throws. A field goal wouldn't be worth much at this point, so the Cowboys are playing for the end zone.

12:39 a.m. — Prescott completes a nine-yard pass to Lamb, putting the Cowboys in Steelers territory. This could be a pivotal drive for Dallas not just in this game, but moving forward in its 2024 season.

Steelers 17, Cowboys 13

12:35 a.m. TOUCHDOWN — Fields just shovels the ball to his tight end, Pat Freiermuth, who does the rest from a few yards out. The Steelers take the lead at home with under five minutes remaining.

12:33 a.m. — Fields completes a pass to Pickens for 22 yards, but a late shove out of bounds on Dallas gives the Steelers some extra yardage. The Steelers' offense has 1st & Goal with a chance to take the lead.

12:30 a.m. — Najee Harris picks up the one yard that the Steelers needed on fourth down, moving the chains. Pittsburgh is into Cowboys territory with under eight minutes remaining.

12:24 a.m. — Prescott is picked for the second time tonight. Joey Porter Jr. comes away with the football, and Pittsburgh will have another opportunity to tie or take the lead.

12:19 a.m. — Dowdle continues his big night with a 13-yard gain on the ground. The running back is up to 69 rushing yards and 27 receiving yards tonight.

12:16 a.m. — As the Cowboys begin another drive, offensive lineman Zack Martin went down with an injury.

12:10 a.m. — Pittsburgh goes three-and-out. The Cowboys will get the ball back, looking to make it two-straight scoring drives.

Cowboys 13, Steelers 10

12:04 a.m. TOUCHDOWN — Prescott finds his running back, Dowdle, in the right corner of the end zone. The Cowboys finally have their first touchdown of the game, and they take the lead in the final frame.

End of third quarter: Steelers 10, Cowboys 6

11:59 p.m. — Prescott is sacked, but gets bailed out by a defensive holding penalty. Dowdle picks up nine yards on the ground, and as the third quarter comes to an end, Dallas has a 3rd & 1 at the Steelers' 24-yard line.

11:57 p.m. — Dallas has had issues finishing its drives tonight.

11:56 p.m. — Prescott moves the chains with a completion to Jalen Tolbert, his fifth catch of the game.

11:54 p.m. — Dallas uses back-to-back 13-yard plays from Dowdle and Ferguson to approach midfield, but then consecutive false starts set up a 1st & 20.

11:48 p.m. — Fields' pass to George Pickens is incomplete on third down, and the Steelers punt. Pickens has just one reception for eight yards in this game.

11:46 p.m. — Now with an opportunity to expand on their lead, the Steelers begin their drive with a 20-yard gain from Najee Harris.

11:41 p.m. — It's another brutal series of events for Dallas in the red zone. First, Prescott is sacked by Watt once again, resulting in a 3rd & 17 the Cowboys can't do much with. Then, Aubrey's 38-yard field goal attempt is blocked, keeping Dallas from making it a one-point game.

11:39 p.m. — Prescott finds Turpin for 34 yards, and the Cowboys' offense is once again in business.

11:37 p.m. — After Prescott's earlier interception in the end zone, it looked like he and CeeDee Lamb had some disagreements on the sidelines.

Steelers 10, Cowboys 6

11:33 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — We have the first touchdown of the game, and it comes on a 16-yard completion from Fields to Connor Heyward. Pittsburgh takes the lead.

11:30 p.m. — Fields is back in the game. He completes a pair of passes to Van Jefferson, and the Steelers are moving deep into Dallas territory.

11:28 p.m. — On the first play of the second half, Fields takes a big hit and Dallas is called for roughing the passer. Pittsburgh gets an extra 15 yards, and Fields will be out for at least one play as he goes to the sidelines.

11:21 p.m. — The Steelers will begin the second half with the ball.

Halftime: Cowboys 6, Steelers 3

11:08 p.m. — The Steelers focus on running the ball out of their own end zone as halftime hits. Neither team has scored a touchdown tonight, but it remains a three-point game in Pittsburgh.

11:03 p.m. — For the second time tonight, Prescott turns the ball over deep into Steelers territory. He's picked off by Donte Jackson in the front of the end zone, and Pittsburgh takes over with under a minute until halftime.

11:00 p.m. — The biggest play of the game comes just as the two-minute warning hits. Prescott finds Jalen Tolbert for 48 yards, giving Dallas a chance to expand its lead before halftime.

10:55 p.m. — A Najee Harris six-yard run is all the Steelers can get after their fourth-down conversion, and they punt again. Penalties, turnovers and inefficiency continue to plague both offenses in what's been a low-scoring game so far.

10:52 p.m. — The Steelers go for it on a 4th & 1 right around the 50-yard line. Fields picks up the first down on a QB sneak.

Cowboys 6, Steelers 3

10:46 p.m. FIELD GOAL — Dallas settles for a field goal once again after a false start pushed its third down attempt back even further. This time, it's a 33-yarder from Aubrey.

10:41 p.m. — The Cowboys have moved the ball deep into Pittsburgh territory once again. TE Jake Ferguson picked up 27 yards on a catch from Prescott, but Dallas now has a 3rd & 11.

10:35 p.m. — Pittsburgh punts after two false start penalties and a sack on Fields. With just over 12 minutes left until halftime, neither offense has found the end zone.

10:31 p.m. — The sack for Watt was the 100th of his career. He remains one of the game's most impactful defenders, now becoming the second-fastest player to reach the significant milestone.

End of first quarter: Cowboys 3, Steelers 3

10:28 p.m. — Both quarterbacks have now fumbled. Prescott loses the ball as he's sacked by T.J. Watt and Nick Herbig, and Pittsburgh takes over just as the first quarter comes to a close.

10:25 p.m. — The Cowboys are inside the Steelers' 20-yard line after solid plays from Lamb, KaVontae Turpin and Rico Dowdle.

10:23 p.m. — Dallas takes over after the Steelers punt, and Prescott hits Lamb for an impressive 27-yard gain on third down soon after.

10:19 p.m. — Linval Joseph gets to Fields, sacking him and forcing a fumble. However, Fields jumped on the ball first, and a Cowboys challenge attempt for possession fails. Pittsburgh keeps the ball, but it brings up a 3rd & 24.

10:15 p.m. — Fields is nearly picked on a deep pass to Van Jefferson, but it falls incomplete.

10:10 p.m. — Prescott is called for intentional grounding on 3rd & 1, effectively ending Dallas' next drive. The Cowboys punt the ball away.

Cowboys 3, Steelers 3

10:05 p.m. FIELD GOAL — Chris Boswell connects from 41 yards out to tie the game. Fields threw for 23 yards in the Steelers' first series of plays, but Pittsburgh couldn't convert on a 3rd & 8.

10:02 p.m. — Cowboys DE Marshawn Kneeland went down with an injury on the fourth play of the drive. Dallas is already thin on its defensive line without Micah Parsons or DeMarcus Lawrence tonight.

9:56 p.m. — The Steelers' offense takes the field, and Justin Fields begins his night with an eight-yard designed run.
