Aaron Rodgers coach history: Inside the Jets QB's revolving door of HCs, from Mike McCarthy to Jeff Ulbrich image

Aaron Rodgers has been in the NFL for quite some time. The Jets' star quarterback is in his 20th season in the league and first full campaign as the starting quarterback for New York.

The illustrious career for the 40-year-old quarterback includes a Super Bowl win, Super Bowl MVP, four league MVPs and 10 Pro Bowls to his name. And he's not done yet, as the Jets have Super Bowl aspirations for 2024.

Whenever a team has a player Rodgers' caliber at quarterback, high expectations come with him. So when the Jets got out to a 2-3 start to the 2024 season, something had to give, and the New York front office elected to fire head coach Robert Saleh. He was in the midst of his fourth season with the Jets, but lasted just five weeks before he was let go of his duties.

Now it's Jeff Ulbrich at the helm, with the Jets promoting the defensive coordinator to interim head coach. It gives Rodgers yet another head coach in his lengthy NFL career.

Just how maybe coaches as Rodgers had? The Sporting News details the full list of coaches that have worked with the veteran quarterback over the years.

Aaron Rodgers coach history

With the recent firing of Saleh and promotion of Ulbrich to interim head coach, it gives Rodgers his sixth head coach in his NFL career.

Here's a breakdown of all six coaches for Rodgers.

Mike Sherman

Rodgers' first coach in the NFL was Mike Sherman, who was with the Packers at the time when Green Bay drafted the QB in the first round of the 2005 draft.

The 2005 season was Rodgers one and only campaign with Sherman as his head coach and he never really got to play under him. Rodgers was the backup to Brett Favre that year, making just three total appearances on the season. Sherman was fired by Green Bay after posting a 4-12 record, his one and only losing season in his six years as head coach of the Packers.

Mike McCarthy

After Sherman was fired, Mike McCarthy took over as head coach of the team in 2006. It was his second stint with the team after previously serving as the quarterbacks coach for the 1999 season.

Rodgers sat behind Favre for the first two seasons with McCarthy at the helm, learning from the veteran QB before finally getting the starting job in 2008 after Favre announced his retirement. That's what kicked off a decade-plus run of dominance from the McCarthy-Rodgers duo.

The quarterback enjoyed his best seasons under McCarthy. After failing to make the playoffs his first season as the starter, the Packers went on a run of eight consecutive postseason appearances from 2009 to 2016. During that span, Green Bay won a Super Bowl, defeating Pittsburgh in Super Bowl 45. Rodgers took home Super Bowl MVP that season.

After winning the Super Bowl, Rodgers earned his first league MVP honor in 2011, a recognition he would repeat with McCarthy as his coach in 2014. Despite the Packer winning the NFC North five times, including four in a row from 2011 to 2014, the team never got back to the playoffs.

In 2017, Green Bay went 7-9 and missed the postseason. The next season wasn't any better, as McCarthy was released by the team after posting a 4-7-1 record, ending the duo's time together in Green Bay.

Joe Philbin

When McCarthy was let go in early December of the 2018 season, Joe Philbin was tabbed as the interim head coach. The Green Bay offensive coordinator held the interim title for the final four games of the season. The Packers went 2-2 to close out the 2018 season at 6-9-1.

Philbin did not get the head coaching job for the next season, and elected not to stay on the staff.

Matt LaFleur

After a season as the Titans offensive coordinator, Matt LaFleur was hired by Green Bay to be the next head coach of the team, giving Rodgers another head coach to work with.

Rodgers and LaFleur's relationship wasn't always smooth sailing, but the two got the job done. The team won 13 games the first three seasons in a row in the LaFleur era, thanks to MVP-worthy seasons out of Rodgers in 2020 and 2011, giving him his third and fourth career league MVP honors.

However, the two could not get over the hump in the playoffs. Green Bay lost in back-to-back NFC Championship games in 2019 and 2020, and lost in the divisional round in 2021. The team then went 8-9 in 2022, missing the playoffs.

There already was speculation about Rodgers potentially retiring throughout the year, and it was unclear if he would return to the Packers in 2023. While he did decide to stay in football, he demanded a trade to the Jets, and in the 2023 offseason, his wish was granted.

Robert Saleh

When Rodgers forced his way to the Jets, he joined Robert Saleh in New York. Saleh had been hired by the Jets in 2021, posting back-to-back losing seasons to start his tenure with the club.

There were high expectations for the group in 2023, but as Jets fans know all too well, that hope vanished within four plays of the season. Early in the season opener, Rodgers tore his Achilles, ending his 2023 season before it could truly get started.

With a healthy Rodgers at the helm of the offense in 2024, once again, the Jets had playoff aspirations. However, after a 2-3 start to the season, Saleh was fired.

Jeff Ulbrich

With Saleh fired after Week 5, Jeff Ulbrich was tabbed as the interim head coach for the remainder of the 2024 season. He started the season as the defensive coordinator for New York.

He and Rodgers will get their first game together with the new relationship in Week 6 when the Jets host the Bills on "Monday Night Football."
