Reid Detmers threw the second no-hitter of the 2022 MLB season — and the first individual no-no of the year — Tuesday, blanking the Rays 12-0 in Anaheim.
He also became just the 25th rookie in MLB history to throw a no-hitter and the second in as many seasons. The Diamondbacks' Tyler Gilbert threw a no-hitter in a 7-0 win over the Padres last Aug. 14.
At 22 years and 306 days, Detmers is the youngest pitcher in Angels history to throw a no-hitter, and the youngest in MLB to throw a no-hitter since the Marlins' Anibal Sanchez (22 years, 191 days) in 2006. Detmers was making just his 11th career start Tuesday.

This was the Angels' first no-hitter since 2019 and the first individual one for the franchise since 2012, when Jered Weaver no-hit the Twins.
Welcome to the club @rdetmers !!! A night you’ll never forget! Cheers!!

The left-hander was in control the entire night. He was perfect through the first five innings before walking Taylor Walls to lead off the sixth. Walls was quickly doubled up on a hard grounder to first baseman Jared Walsh.
In the seventh, Brett Phillips reached on a questionable error by Walsh in the seventh. Those were the Rays' only baserunners.
The game ended on Yandy Diaz's grounder to shortstop Andrew Velasquez, who flipped a high throw to Walsh for the final putout.
What a moment!

Detmers befuddled the Rays with a masterful mix of fastballs and breaking balls. He struck out just two batters and threw a season-high 104 pitches.
In an on-field interview after the game, Detmers had few words. He said he "blocked out" the pressure and thanked his teammates for their performance.
The game was out of hand early, with the Angels leading 8-0 after three innings. Kevin Cash and the Rays made their feelings known about it when Phillips was called in from the outfield to pitch the bottom of the eighth. Mike Trout hit a home run, Shohei Ohtani doubled off the wall and Anthony Rendon homered left-handed to make it 12-0 heading into the ninth.

This is the sixth time in franchise history the Rays have been no-hit. The previous one was Felix Hernandez's perfect game for the Mariners in 2012.
The Angels appear to be on the verge of something special this season. They're now 21-11, they've won six of their last seven, and they lead the American League West by a game over the Astros. They'll close out their series against the Rays on Wednesday.
