The stage is set for the 151st Open Championship.
On Thursday morning, 156 of the world's best golfers will begin their quest for the Claret Jug in the final major of the year. This year's venue is Royal Liverpool Golf Club, on the shores of the Irish Sea in northwest England.
As is often the case at the United Kingdom's most prestigious tournament, the competitors will be keeping an eye on the sky throughout the weekend. Unpredictable weather is one of the biggest challenges they'll face in the tournament.
The forecast for the first two days looks promising, with relatively clear skies expected. But conditions are expected to worsen as the weekend progresses, with rain predicted for Saturday and Sunday. It could make for a dramatic final round as wet conditions wreak havoc on the field.

Thursday: First round
Players can look forward to beautiful conditions for Thursday's first round.
Clear skies are expected throughout the day, with temperatures ranging from 14-17 degrees Celsius (57-63 degrees Fahrenheit). Winds will be between 10 and 15 mph.
There appears to be no clear advantage for players in the morning or afternoon waves, as the weather is expected to remain the same throughout the day.
Friday: Second round
Showers will begin overnight Thursday and continue into Friday morning, but conditions are expected to clear by early afternoon. This gives a clear advantage to the players teeing off in the afternoon wave — and a disadvantage to those playing their rounds in the morning.
The temperatures and winds will remain virtually the same as on Thursday, with highs around 17 degrees Celsius (63 degrees Fahrenheit) and winds topping out at around 15 mph.

Saturday: Third round
Conditions will begin to deteriorate on Saturday morning. Steady rain is expected throughout the day, with heavy rain possible in certain areas. No players should have an advantage based on when they tee off.
If there's any good news, it's that the winds will be slightly calmer, with gusts topping out at closer to 10 mph. Temperatures will continue to hover around 17 degrees Celsius (63 degrees Fahrenheit).
Sunday: Final round
The worst weather of the tournament is expected to arrive Sunday. The BBC is forecasting "thundery showers," with rain expected to fall for another full day. After two days of wet weather, the course will likely be slow by the time the leaders come down the stretch.
Temperatures will be slightly warmer, with highs near 19 degrees Celsius (66 degrees Fahrenheit). Winds will remain close to 10 mph.

If there is any lightning in the area, tournament organizers could be forced to stop play. If it becomes impossible to finish the event on Sunday, competition will resume Monday.
