Just over two months ago, Xander Schauffele was the nearly man of the golf majors; the bridesmaid on the four biggest days of the year. Twelve top-10 finishes in his major career, and no titles.

It's time to change the record.

Schauffele withstood pressure from Bryson DeChambeau and Viktor Hovland to win the PGA Championship in May. At Royal Troon on Sunday, a flawless final round of 65 saw him triumph at the 2024 Open Championship, his score of nine under par putting him two shots clear of the excellent Justin Rose and Billy Horschel.

His challengers performed well in the improved conditions on Scotland's west coast, but minor mistakes were their undoing. Overnight leader Horschel was made to pay for two bogeys in the front nine. South African Thriston Lawrence gained four strokes before the turn but could not sustain the momentum. Rose had just the one blemish at the par-four 12th, but critical birdie putts refused to drop in.

Schauffele, by comparison, started well and simply got better. As the pressure increased, so did his accuracy. Four birdies from the 11th through the 16th saw him wrestle control of a previously competitive leaderboard, and he never looked likely to lose it. "I had this sense of calm," he said of his emotional state as he approached the 18th. "I told myself to just hit it down there like you have all day long." He did.

The 30-year-old is the first man to achieve the double of US PGA and Open titles in the same year since Rory McIlroy a decade ago. His triumph here ensures all four majors are held by Americans for the first time in a single year since 1982.

On the evidence of the past two months, he won't give his up lightly.

Open Championship live updates, results, highlights from Sunday's Round 4

(All times Eastern.)

1:45 p.m.: A moment Xander Schauffele will never forget.

1:30 p.m.: Lawrence catches the lip of the bunker and the ball almost hits him square in the face. He recovers admirably to his a fine approach shot and give himself chance of a par finish.

1:21 p.m.: Lawrence misses the birdie putt on the 17th, and that should be that, barring a miracle on the 18th from the final group.

1:17 p.m.: Schauffele holds for par, and a final round of 65. A sensational performance. Rose makes a fine birdie to move within two, and a likely second place.

1:13 p.m.: Rose and Schauffele land on the green almost exactly level distance from the pin. They've both been outstanding today. The American has just played the key shots better. He salutes the grandstands at the 18th green as they cheer him home.

1:04 p.m.: Schauffele plays it safe: lovely length on the first putt and a tap-in for par. He's nearly there.

12:59 p.m.: If Schauffele holds firm here, it'll be the first time all four majors have been won by Americans in a single year since 1982. The winners back then? Tom Watson (x2), Raymond Floyd, and Craig Stadler.

12:54 p.m.: Schauffele moves to -9! Once again, the American just quietly gets the job done. Rose makes the birdie to stay within three, but this is beginning to look done.

12:49 p.m.: Henley makes his first gain since the fifth and moves to -5. Scheffler completely mishits his tee shot on the 18th and looks like he wants this day to end. Rose has a 51-footer for an eagle, but that was always tough.

12:38 p.m.: It's happened again: Rose's birdie putt holds its line and skirts past the hole. He can hardly believe it. He's played very well today, but it's not quite been enough. Schauffele can't reel off a third straight birdie, but he still leads by two.

12:36 p.m.: Another HUGE birdie putt from Lowry! If he could get another at the 18th, he might just about be in the conversation. Either way, he's hit the two best putts of the day.

12:24 p.m.: Rose with a second birdie putt in a row that misses by mere inches. He stays at -5 through 14 holes, and he can't quite believe it. Schauffele rolls one to the lip, and it drops in — he moves to -8. Meanwhile, Brown makes a lovely birdie to move back under par.

12:17 p.m.: Lawrence does his best to rescue par at the 12th, but he can't quite manage it. Schauffele leads.

12:12 p.m.: For the first time today, Lawrence seems to get a touch of nerves. His tee shot on the 12th ends up in scrubland, and only the legs of some spectators stops his second shot bouncing deep into the rough. Schauffele quietly moves level at -7.

12:01 p.m.: So unlucky for Justin Rose! That looked in all the way until it hugged the left edge and rolled away. He drops to -5.

11:58 a.m.: Rose is unlucky to pick out the very edge of some longer grass to the rear right edge of the green. As a result, the chip doesn't have as much pace as he would like. He's battling at the moment to stay in touch. Lowry saves par at the 14th after finding the bunker, but he needs to make some gains now.

11:46 a.m.: Big puff of the cheeks from Rose as he saves par at the 11th despite a misjudged birdie putt. Schauffele joins him at -6. Jon Rahm signs off for the week with a 68 final round to finish in a tie for eighth place.

11:41 a.m.: A beautiful shot from Schauffele, lifting the ball from the edge of the rough to land within three feet of the pin. He's very much in this. Horschel gets a bit too heavy handed at the 10th green and slips to -4.

11:39 a.m.: Calum Scott claims the silver medal as the best-performing amateur at this championship. A final round of 76 sees him finish at +8.

11:22 a.m.: A roar from Lawrence as a fine approach lands five feet from the pin. He sinks the putt to take the lead. Horschel holds for par, as does Rose at the 10th.

11:14 a.m.: Problems for Horschel at the eighth as he misses what looked a routine par putt after getting a lucky contact on the way out of a bunker. He slips back to five under. Henley is inches from a birdie at the ninth, but he stays a shot further back.

10:57 a.m.: "Just like a big teddy bear, isn't he?" says the announcer as Lawrence joins the leaders at -6. There'd be quite the celebratory picnic if he wins this. Meanwhile, Sam Burns birdies the Postage Stamp and is now just four strokes back with 10 holes to play. He's not out of this yet.

10:57 a.m.: Just as it looked like he was on the charge, Scheffler has fallen to -2. A double bogey is a horrible way to finish the front nine. Is that his chance gone?

10:53 a.m.: Rose raises a fist to the crowd as he joins Horschel on six under par. There's a steely eyed look to the Englishman today. Schauffele attempts to join them but just can't find the length.

10:48 a.m.: Schauffele with a birdie at seven, but Horschel moves to -6! Good pressure putt there. He regains the outright lead.

10:40 a.m.: Schauffele and Scheffler each move to four under, so we now have seven players separated by a single stroke.

10:35 a.m.: Here comes Shane Lowry! A third birdie at the Postage Stamp this week moves him to within a shot of the leaders.

10:31 a.m.: Par for Lawrence and Henley — who played a fine bunker shot — at the fifth, as a huge cargo plane descends into nearby Prestwick Airport. The roar of those engines would've been nothing compared to the crowd at the sixth had Rose sunk that birdie putt, but it just didn't have the legs.

10:24 a.m.: Russell Henley makes the most of a superb tee shot on the fifth to move within a stroke of the leaders. Lowry birdies at the seventh and is back to -3.

10:19 a.m.: Horschel moves back to five under! Great response to that dropped shot, and the pressure is back on Rose. Lawrence follows suit to join the leaders at -5.

10:15 a.m.: Schauffele skirts the edge of the hole but can't quite make the birdie. At the fifth, Rose pars to stay at five under. Meanwhile, Jon Rahm has dug himself out of some trouble at the 11th, escaping with a bogey. He's not quite out of the running yet. Daniel Brown is also now at one under after back-to-back bogeys in a tricky start here.

10:05 a.m.: Another birdie and another fist-pump from Rose. He leads the Open at -5. 

9:59 a.m.: Horschel drops a shot at the third, and he's back to four under, level with Rose. The first sign of nerves for the day? No such worries for Thriston Lawrence, who moves to -4. We have a three-way tie for the lead.

9:55 a.m.: Shane Lowry sinks a birdie putt from over 56 feet! What might that do for his chances? He's now three off the lead and, surely, feeling confident.

9:44 a.m.: A chance goes begging for Rose as he rolls a birdie putt inches wide. Horschel may already feel luck is on his side, having sent his tee shot at the second right into the spectators only to end up with an enviable lie.

9:31 a.m.: Rose birdies the second! The Englishman moves onto four under with Horschel. Scheffler picks up a stroke on the third and is now just one behind. Can Horschel respond with a birdie at the first? Oh, you bet he can. Superb putt.

9:28 a.m.: Horschel, West Ham bag in tow, hits the final opening tee shot of the day. It's a good one.

9:03 a.m.: Here's Justin Rose, still clad in his claret sweater. He comfortably finds the fairway. Playing partner Xander Schauffele does likewise. They both look locked in here.

8:57 a.m.: Scottie Scheffler and Daniel Brown are off and running. The latter found the rough off the first tee, but it doesn't look too thick.

8:38 a.m.: Justin Thomas tees off just four strokes behind Horschel... and it's a horrible shank that nearly lands on the beach. He'll stay where he is and try again. In the end, it's a triple bogey to start his round, which moves him to +3 overall. What a wretched way to start.

8:21 a.m.: Jon Rahm is a man on a mission: birdies on the first three holes has put him within three strokes of the leader!

8:00 a.m.: Justin Rose is here, and he's wearing a claret-coloured sweater. Does he believe?

7:56 a.m.: Phil Mickelson is out here making pars from lies like this.

7:24 a.m.: Cameron Young is inches from a superb eagle putt on the fourth. He makes the birdie and moves to one under for the day, and seven off the lead.

6:46 a.m.: Home favourite Bob MacIntyre, a week on from his Scottish Open triumph, is at one under through the front nine. A top-20 finish isn't out of the question.

6:12 a.m.: Jordan Spieth hasn't had the best weekend, but boy, he enjoyed this. The 2017 champion is three under through the first eight holes today.

5:18 a.m.: What a start to the day from Harris English — a birdie on the first for the American. It's even better when you look at how the wind is whipping up that flag...
