Open Championship 2022 live golf results, highlights from Sunday's Round 4 as spectacular Smith takes Open glory and McIlroy's long wait goes on image

Cameron Smith produced one of the all-time great rounds in Open Championship history to pip Rory McIlroy to glory at St. Andrews.

McIlroy was chasing his fifth major, and a first in eight years, and opened up a two-shot lead by the turn.

The Northern Irishman produced a bogey-free round and birdied Holes 5 and 10. However, solid and tidy golf was not enough to repel Smith, who conjured something otherworldly.

The Australian’s putting stroke has been labelled the finest on the professional circuit and he backed up those claims emphatically with a remarkable run of five consecutive birdies from 10 to 14 that turned the tournament on its head.

An eighth birdie of a bogey-free 64 came on the final hole, meaning Smith carded 20 under to beat Tiger Woods’ 2000 Open record at St. Andrews by a stroke.

McIlroy an eagle on the last hole to match the spectacular eagle Cameron Young found on Hole 18, but settled for par, meaning he finished in third, two and one shy of Smith and Young, respectively.

It will surely rank as a truly deflating experience for the 33-year-old world No. 2, whose wait to once again win one of golf’s greatest prizes goes on.

He did at least make a better fist of things than Viktor Hovland, the overnight joint-leader who carded a Sunday 74 to finish tied for fourth on -14 alongside Tommy Fleetwood.

How Cameron Smith beat Rory McIlroy with record-breaking display

Smith had already served notice of being among the very best in the sport. He won the Tournament of Champions with a PGA Tour record score of 34 under-par in January and backed that up with glory at the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass.

However, this was truly something else, especially when considering the 12th-hole meltdown that occured on Sunday at Augusta in April. Smith’s 30 on the Back 9 is the lowest over a closing nine holes in Open history. As far back as records go, no player had held the 54-hole lead at a major, hit every green in regulation in the final round and lost until Smith overhauled McIlroy today.

His 64 is the second-lowest final round by an Open winner, matching Greg Norman’s efforts in 1993 and one shy of Henrik Stenson’s majestic round at Royal Troon in 2016.

When did Rory McIlroy last win a major?

McIlroy won the 2014 Open and added the USPGA before the end of the year. It felt improbable at that time that an ongoing eight-year wait would follow. Back on familiar ground and buoyed by several practice rounds with Tiger Woods, it felt like McIlroy’s time, only for Smith to fail to read the script.

Sunday marked McIlroy’s 17th top-10 major finish in the interim period, including all four this season. Given the position he was in heading onto the back nine, this one probably hurts more than any other near miss.

"I expected someone to come from the pack. The two Camerons played really well and made life difficult for me," McIlroy told Sky Sports afterwards. "I played a controlled round of golf but where I needed to make some birdies at the start of the Back 9 I just couldn’t.

"I came a couple short of what I thought I needed. I thought I needed to get to 20 under but I gave another good account of myself this week. I’ve got to keep my head down and keep moving forward."

Open Championship 2022 result, updates and highlights from Sunday's Round 4

(All times BST)

6:50pm: Having held a share of the lead overnight and not dropped a shot all day, McIlroy somehow drops to third behind Smith and Young after a par on the last. That will really sting for the Northern Irishman, this really felt like the day the wait would be over. But he ran into a man in Smith, who played the round and back nine of his life.

6:42pm: Rory looks for that bit of magic but his chip scoots past the hold. Cameron Smith is the 2022 Open champion.

6:38pm: McIlroy is shy of the green. He needs a miracle.

6:36pm: WELL THEN!!!! Young holes an eagle put for a two on 18. He is alongside Smith on 19 under. It won't last as a birdie looks a formality for the leader, but McIlroy standing on the tee has just had a good look at what needs to be done. Smith puts to finish on an incredible -20.

6:32pm: McIlroy's shot to fashion this opportunity was immense, can he find the birdie to match? No! Again it's agonisingly close. Meanwhile, on 18, Smith opts not to chip and gets out his trusty putter for another outrageous bit of golf. It's to within a few feet. That will be a birdie, a bogey-free 64 and the Open Championship unless McIlroy somehow eagles the last.

6:27pm: Smith on 18. He's birdie, par, par on here this week. He's up to the edge of the green but that's a bit of a tricky pitch. Young shows he still believes with a fine stroke of his own. On 17, McIlroy brings one down to avoid the dreaded road. He will have a put for birdie. He's not made one since 10 and this would be beyond timely.

6:25pm: Young leaves his birdie attempt short and that's the end of his bid for the Claret Jug, barring anything absurd. Smith has a tricky par put to negotiate and has just heard the crowd delight at McIlroy nailing his tee shot. Smith drains it! Is that the two-putt from trouble that wins the Open?

6:22pm: Hovland misses his par putt on 16. A day that promised so much for the 24-year-old has turned into a real slog. Now here's Smith's putt up and around the bunker on 17. It's decent, but it will take nerves of steel along with that exemplary stroke for him to save par, as McIlroy has on 16.

6:19pm: Decent attempt from McIlroy, left to right and then right to left, but he can't find the moment of magic he needs on 16. Knee-trembler left for par. Some signs of nerves from Smith on 17? He's shy of the greenside bunker, while Young's approach is a beauty. The American has a great chance to go to 18 under and Smith faces a battle to save par.

6:15pm: Leaderboard update: -19: Smith (16), -18: McIlroy (15), -17: Young (16), -15 Hovland (15), -13: Harman (F), Fleetwood (17), Johnson (17).

6:10pm: Fine effort from Smith - does he hit bad putts? - but he'll to settle for par. He leads the Open by one shot with two to play. Behind him, McIlroy is left off the 16th tee and that doesn't give him much to work with for his pitch shot.

6:07pm: You know the drill...McIlroy sends a long-range attempt on its way. It looks good but it just doesn't make it. He's got three more holes to make up a stroke and hope a rampant Smith doesn't do likewise. At 16, Young's approach roles back off the green but he recovers with a lovely put up and over the bump. That'll do nicely to save par.

6:00pm: Smith's tee shot on 16 hangs right and gives him nice access to the green. Hovland and McIlroy are out of the rough and onto the green at 15. Each have long putts on a hole where dropped shots really don't feel like an option. Speith completes his fourth under-par round of the week to join DeChambeau in the clubhouse on 12 under.

5:56pm: Nasty little left to right does for Young, who is unable to join McIlroy on 18 under. That was on the 15th green, where Smith shows he is human by settling for par. Back on that tee, McIlroy has found the rough but the lie looks okay.

5:54pm: McIlroy misses top side. A fine effort but another birdie opportunity goes begging and Smith's lead remains. Hovland also can't pick up a shot and stays on 15 under. You'd have caused a few raised eyebrows if you'd predicted neither man collecting a shot on that fairly straightforward par 5. Pressure does funny things.

5:50pm: McIlroy opts to putt rather than pitch at 14. He's on the green but will do very well to make birdie. Smith, meanwhile, has got himself into some nonsense off the tee at 15. But the lie is good and he gets to the green on the par four. It's a long-ranger but, frankly, who'd bet against him making it in this mood?

5:40pm: This is just electrifying from Smith, whose eagle putt at 14 went to within inches. A formality to tap in and Cameron Smith leads the Open Championship.

5:45pm: For anyone playing St Andrews Bingo, Spieth has just putted off the road at 17. He holes his follow up to save par.

5:35pm: McIlroy at 13. There's a chance of him three-putting here, but that's a superb long-range attempt. It stops up just short. Another fine shot, it'll be another par. However, those have been dropping for Smith. It doesn't feel like McIlroy will simply be able to do this in regulation.

5:30pm: Leaderboard update: -18: Smith (13), McIlroy (12), -16: Young (13), Hovland (12), -13: Fleetwood (14), Johnson (14).

5:28pmCameron Smith has a share of the lead. The Australian's feted putting stroke is on fire. That's four birdies out of four now and six under for the round. Can McIlroy respond? He's got a better shot at doing so than Hovland, who followed up his recent birdie but plonking his tee shot at 13 into a fairway bunker.

5:23pm: McIlroy misses down the hill and will remain on 18 under. On 13, Smith's second shot is a beauty. He'll take a stab at a birdie and a share of the lead. Hovland makes birdie and is one off the lead. How are your nerves, Rory?

5:20pm: For what it's worth (very little, given what's going on in the final two groups), Bryson DeChambeau has closed on 12 under and is the clubhouse leader. On 12, Hovland hits a lovely bump-and-run to give himself a very good birdie chance. McIlroy takes the aerial route and is outside his partner's shot.

5:17pm: McIlroy will know Smith is breathing down his neck and he drives with impressive composure in 12. Meanwhile, Smith's tee shot on 13, one that got him in trouble yesterday, is on the money.

5:12pm: The par three 11th has scuppered a fair few this week, but McIlroy get out with par. And it's a good job, given the way Smith is motoring. The Australian drains a brilliant putt for his third birdie in a row on 12 and is just one behind.

5:09pm: McIlroy finds the perfect response to the Smith and Young charge with a stunning eagle putt from way downtown on 10. That makes the birdie a formality. He's three clear... or not! Smith has picked up another shot to move to 16 under and outright second as Hovland can only manage par at 10.

5:00pm: Leaderboard update: -17: McIlroy (9), -15: Hovland (9), Young (10), Smith (10), - 13: Johnson (12), -12 Spieth (13), Fleetwood (12)

4:58pm: Birdies for Smith and Young on 10! The two Camerons were four shots behind McIlroy and Hovland at the start of play, they're now all level with the Hovland in second. It's bunching up tantalisingly behind McIlroy.

4:55pm: Tremendous putt from Hovland, leaves him with a simple tap-in for parr. Over to Rory... oh, that's so close. Kisses the edge of the cup and leave a little knee tremble for par. McIlroy takes care of business and reaches the turn on one under for the round, boasting a two-shot lead.

4:52pm: Hovland pulls left off the tee at nine and is fortunate to land in the short rough. His wedge amounts to a decent recovery but doesn't leave much of a birdie chance. What's McIlroy got in response? He's 57 yards from the pin and gets it to check nicely. Far from a gimme but an opportunity to go three clear at the turn.

4:45pm: Young escapes with a bogey five on the ninth and Smith missed the sort of birdie putt he really has to make if he wants to apply pressure to McIlroy. The penultimate pair are both on 14 under and that hole was more good news for the leader.

4:40pm: Tommy Fleetwood was a touch too aggressive with his birdie putt on the par-3 12th and it lipped out. That would have moved him to 13 under and a tie of fifth with Johnson and playing partner Adam Scott.

4:37pm: McIlroy and Hovland two-putt tidily on the eighth for their pars. Young has found his ball in a bush within the alotted three minutes and will now embark upon some damage limitation.

4:32pm: Dear, oh dear. Turns out the 80-yard wide fairway on the ninth isn't wide enough for Young, who clumps his drive waaaaaay left. The hot streak is about to come to an end.

4:30pm: Rory gets his tee shot to the 203-yard par three to sit down. I wish the absolute lummox hollering "MASHED POTATO!" for every initial shot on that hole would do the same. Hovland ends up about 70 feet away. McIlroy's birdie attempt will be tricky but Hovland's is basically a non-starter.

4:22pm: McIlroy and Hovland clear the seventh with a par apiece. There are opportunities coming up for both men, especially at nine and 10. Will those holes either side of the turn decide the Open?

4:15pm: Speith's eventful round continues with a birdie at 10, moving him back to 12 under. Smith goes close but not close enough to his birdie on seven. That would have moved the Australian level with Hovland. His namesake rolls one around the cup and in and Cameron Young is tied for second. Four birdies in five holes, all having dropped a shot at the first, is a stunning run from the American.

4:08pm: McIlroy rolls a clever long-range putt up and down the undulating route to the sixth hole. He likes it and runs, slightly puppyish, after his shot to pop his marker down. That's a birdie chance. Talking of which, Hovland comes agonisingly close to clawing a shot back with a brilliant uphill attempt. He needs something like that to drop for him before McIlroy's cushion becomes too substantial. It doesn't increase here though, with the leader's birdie attempt stopping near enough on the lip! It's as you were at the front.

4:00pm: Leaderboard update: -17: McIlroy (5), -15 Hovland (5), -12: Young (5), Smith (5), Scott (8) Fleetwood (7), Johnson (7)

3:55pm: Lovely eagle putt from McIlroy to a matter of inches. He tidies up for his first birdie of the round. The lead will be two unless Hovland pulls this one out...the Norwegian is just wide to the left!

3:52pm: Exceptional approach to five from McIlroy and he has an eagle chance. The Northern Irishman has gone level par through he first four and he's now entering a part of the golf course he has ripped up over recent days. Hovland's third shot is a gap wedge from behind the bunker and he leaves himself a makeable birdie putt uphill. Given where McIlroy is, it feels like one he has to sink.

3:47pm: Speith's rampant run comes to an end as he bogeys 12. Smith and Young trim the gap with birdies on five. They're down to 14 under, within a stroke of Hovland.

3:42pm: Hovland is unable to save par and McIlroy leads the Open outright. That's a lovely position to be in heading to the fifth, where birdies have been on the cards for pretty much everyone lately. Unless you're poor old Scottie Scheffler, who seemingly cannot buy a putt right now.

3:40pm: Now Hovland is in a bit of trouble on four. His approach was almost 80 feet away from the flag and he now has a tricky putt to make par. World number one Scottie Scheffler has just bogeyed the par 5 fifth. That's a rotter and probably ends his lingering hopes. Dustin Johnson picks up a shot on the same hole, meaning he's also on 12 under alongside Jordan Spieth, who has been tearing things up with a run of four birdies in seven holes.

3:32pm: Cameron Young drains a lovely putt down the hill at the fourth. That's back-to-back birdies after his dropped shot on the first. Playing partner Cameron Smith makes par and they're joint second on 13 under, three strokes behind McIlroy and Hovland

3.30pm: Very clinical from McIlroy so far, which is similar to how he played yesterday. He wasn't too far from the fairway bunker as he started off the third tee, but he ends up not far short of the green. Meanwhile, Celli has secured the Silver Medal after birdying at the 18th. Brilliant by the Italian who finishes the week five under!

3.20pm: Tyrell Hatton has earned himself a reputation for being one of the waspish golfers on the tour, but he has played some excellent golf this week and he's now up to joint-four on 11 under! Spieth has just joined him on the same score with his third birdie of the day.

3.10pm: Smith making moves! A birdie for the Australian at the second and that moves him to within three shots of the co-leaders. Smith already looks a bit looser than he did yesterday. This is more like how he played on Friday!

3.05pm: Pars! Hovland and McIlroy both had good looks at birdie putts at the first, but neither could hole. Comfortable pars. No gains, but that will settle the nerves of the pair.

3.00pm: Hovland and McIlroy are away! There's no doubting who the crowd favourite is - McIlroy got an excellent reception as he was announced before teeing off. He might have to show some patience over the first few holes. Keep in mind it wasn't until around the turn that McIlroy found his groove yesterday.

2.50pm: Cameron Smith and Cameron Young have started their final rounds. They start four shots back from the leaders, Hovland and McIlroy. They are perhaps the only ones who can truly apply some pressure. This is where the serious stuff starts!

2.45pm: Some final preparations from McIlroy on the practice green. Hovland arrived at the course nearly an hour later than the Northern Irishman who has chosen to have a walk around, have some lunch, do some gym work and hit the range. Even after achieving so much in the game, McIlroy will be feeling the nerves!

2.35pm: Eagle! Exceptional from Italian amateur Filippo Celli at the 14th as he holes an eagle! Celli is now six clear of the nearest amateur, Aaron Jarvis, who is in the clubhouse. That might well be enough to secure the Silver Medal!

2.25pm: Sadom Kaewkanjan has just made a birdie at the 16th and that has given him a chance to match the round of the week at 64! Two more birdies over the final two holes and he would card a 63! What a week it has been for the Thai golfer. Can he finish off in style?

2.10pm: Jordan Spieth and Patrick Cantlay have just started their final rounds of the week and the pair have both started with pars at the first! That could have been better for Spieth in particular who had a look at a birdie putt, but couldn't convert. Interestingly, 12 of the 18 holes are playing under par today!

2.00pm: Leaderboard update: -16: McIlroy (-), Hovland (-), -12: Young (-), Smith (12), -11: Kaewkanjana (16), SW Kim (-), Scheffler (-), -10: Ancer (16), D Johnson (-)

1.45pm: We're starting to get some stars stepping up to the first tee. Shane Lowry has just started his final round. He electrified the crowd with back-to-back eagles yesterday! US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick is also about to tee off very shortly. He will start seven back from the leaders.

1.35pm: The tee times everyone is waiting for... 2.00pm - Jordan Spieth, Patrick Cantlay, 2.10pm - Matt Fitzpatrick, Adam Scott, 2.20pm - Dustin Johnson, Tommy Fleetwood, 2.30pm - Si Woo Kim, Scottie Scheffler, 2.40pm - Cameron Young, Cameron Smith, 2.50pm - Rory McIlroy, Viktor Hovland.

1.25pm: It's been a gentle morning and early afternoon in this final round of the 150th Open. Hovland and McIlroy have such a commanding lead that it's going to be very difficult for anyone to bridge the gap before we get to the last five or six pairings, but Burns and Schauffele have provided some entertainment. The headline acts are still to come!

1.10pm: Another eagle! That's two eagles for Robert MacIntyre today! He's just converted a 40-foot putt on the 12th green to move to six under for the tournament. There have been some great moments from the Scot this week, but his overall golf has been inconsistent - today sums that up!

1.00pm: Three-in-a-row! Not many players have made major moves in the early stages of today's final round, but Xander Schauffele has now made three birdies in-a-row! The Belgian is now at eight under for the tournament and he's only at the fourth! He's probably still too far back to truly trouble the leaders, but Schauffele is making some gains.

12.50pm: Leaderboard as it stands: -16: McIlroy, Hovland, -12: Young, Smith, -11: SW Kim, Scheffler, -10: D Johnson, -9: Fleetwood, Fitzpatrick, Scott, -8: Spieth, Cantlay

12.40pm: Anticipation is building as McIlroy arrives at the Old Course. He will start his final round on 15 under, but will he still be the co-leader by the time he tees off at 2.50pm? Just as there was yesterday, there are a lot of gains to be had out there.

12.30pm: Burns is back in the clubhouse and he has been speaking about the conditions on the course. "Probably the most benign conditions we've had all week," he said after a round of 64. "A little softer with the rain and not as much wind. It's definitely more gettable."

12:20pm: World number three Jon Rahm is now at the first. It's been a frustrating week for the Spaniard, and that has been clear in his facial expressions and body language. He's fought the urge to snap his putter in two! However, a good final round could still push him up the leaderboard.

12.10pm: An excellent final round by Burns who cards a 64 - that's the joint-lowest round of the week! The American holed a 20-foot putt at the 18th to finish off and that moves him on to six under for the tournament.

12.00pm: Patrick Reed is enjoying himself out there this morning. The 2018 Masters champion has just produced a birdie at the 17th to go to five under for the round and tournament. Meanwhile, the TV cameras have just shown McIlroy arriving at the course.

11.50am: Sunday at The Open. It brings a different sort of pressure. How will those with a genuine chance of being named Champion Golfer of the Year handle it? On top of this, you have the pressure of playing at St Andrews. Miss this opportunity and it might never come again!

11.40am: There's no doubting who most of the fans at the Old Course are here to see today. Rory McIlroy is co-leader heading into the final round and this is an opportunity he has waited a long time for. He and Viktor Hovland will tee off at 2.50pm.

"The support that I’ve gotten this week has been absolutely incredible,” McIlroy said after his round of 66 on Saturday. “I appreciate it and I feel it out there. But at the same time I’m trying my hardest just to stay in my own little world because that’s the best way for me to get the best out of myself.”

11.30am: Burns looks likely to be the biggest mover this morning. He's on seven under for the day and is yet to bogey.

The 25-year-old from Louisiana is taking part in his second Open after finishing 76th last year.

11.15am: Thomas hits an eagle and a birdie, and Cameron Tringale earns his fifth birdie of the day. The American is currently two ahead of his 26th-placed finish last year, on five under.

11am: Sheffield amateur Sam Bairstow's mother is in tears and shares a hug with his father as she watches him finish his tournament on four over.

10.45am: Thomas has just hit his best shot of the morning, putting himself within distance from 269 yards before converting an 18-foot putt. He's now three under.

10.30am: 23-year-old South African Garrick Higgo has made the cut here for the first time, and he's hit a hat-trick of birdies and an eagle for a four-under round today. Impressive.

10.15am: Matsuyama has stolen the show so far today, going five under for the round so far to put himself two under overall.

10am: Thomas does not make the best of starts, hitting a bogey to move to one under. Partner Armitage is on par.

9.45am: PGA champion Justin Thomas and Marcus Armitage, who are both two under, have just teed off in the Open's featured group.

Sam Burns is playing in his second edition of the tournament and has just hit a third birdie of the morning to move to one under.

9.30am: Bairstow has had an excellent morning, hitting three birdies to reach four over and remain among the contenders for the Silver Medal.

9.15am: David Law and Hideki Matsuyama have been among the players starting the action today. Matsutyama is three under after a birdie on the fifth.

9am: Hovland and McIlroy are scheduled to begin their final rounds at 2.50pm local time. "We talked about footwear, what he did for the last couple of weeks - he's gone back to Norway," McIlroy said of their on-course chat.

"We kept it nice and loose. We got very close at The Ryder Cup last year. I played a practice round with Viktor when he was still an amateur at the US Openat Pebble Beach in 2019, so I've got to know him pretty well over the last few years."

8.45am: Hovland doesn't mind much of the attention being on McIlroy despite his brilliant third round here in Scotland.

"There are a lot of things that can happen with these placements," he said afterwards. "You can play fine and shoot an even par and it will bring in a lot of other guys. It will depend how the conditions are."

8.30am: Odds check: pre-tournament favourite McIlroy is now odds-on to win, with Hovland behind him. Cameron Smith offers long rewards for those still backing him, with Scottie Scheffler the outsider.

8.15am: Amateur Sam Bairstow has already started play today. Filippo Celli, of Italy, leads the way in the race for the Silver Medal - awarded to the amateur who finishes highest - on four under.

8am: Hello and welcome to The Sporting News' coverage of the final day of the 150th edition of the Open Championship.

Rory McIlroy and Viktor Hovland both shot six-under-par 66 rounds to establish a joint lead on 16 under ahead of the fourth day. Cameron Smith and Cameron Young are tied directly behind them on 12 under par.
