Hideki Matsuyama won the Masters in 2021. He took home $2.07 million in prize money and joined the select group of golfers who have taken home the green jacket over the 88-year history of the event.

Of course, Matsuyama received another perk as part of his win: He got to choose the menu for the 2022 Masters Champions Dinner.

The Masters Champions Dinner is a long-standing tradition that was started by golf legend Ben Hogan in 1952. Hogan suggested that the previous winners of the event gather for a "stag dinner" along with Augusta National Golf Club president Bobby Jones and chairman Clifford Roberts

“My only stipulation,” Hogan wrote to Roberts, per the Augusta Chronicle, “is that you wear your green coat.”

The dinner began with 11 attendees but has since grown to include a much larger and more diverse bunch of champions. That now includes Matsuyama, who became the first Japanese golfer to win the Masters with his victory in 2021.

What does Matsuyama have on his menu for Tuesday night's 2022 Masters Champions Dinner? His choices are inspired by dishes from his home country.

What is Miyazaki Wagyu?

Miyazaki Wagyu is a type of beef that comes from Japanese black cattle. The cattle are raised in the Miyazaki Prefecture in Japan and they are 100 percent purebred, as HolyGrailSteak.com details.

Treated like royalty by ranchers who raise them, Miyazaki Wagyu cattle are carefully recorded, documented, and tracked. This way, anyone can trace their lineage, age, farm, and lifeline. This transparency ensures authenticity and that consumers are receiving the best quality Miyazaki Wagyu beef.

Translated as “Japanese cow,” Wagyu beef is best known for its signature marbling, which results in its exquisite flavor, texture, and tenderness.

So, Matsuyama's main course is a high-quality Japanese steak served with mixed mushrooms and vegetables. Sounds pretty good.

What was served at the 2021 Masters Champions Dinner?

Dustin Johnson got to choose the Champions Dinner menu in 2021 after winning the Masters in 2020.

Johnson's menu had an American flair to it, but like Matsuyama, he chose steak as the main course.

  • Appetizers: Pigs in a Blanket and lobster & corn fritters
  • First course: House salad or Caesar salad
  • Family-style sides: Mashed potatoes and spring vegetables
  • Main course: Filet mignon and miso-marinated sea bass
  • Dessert: Peach cobbler and apple pie with vanilla ice cream

Who pays for the Masters Champions Dinner?

According to Golf Today, the outgoing champion pays for the dinner. So, Matsuyama will be fronting the bill for this year's dinner. He should be able to afford it easily after taking home $2.07 million from the Masters last year.
