LIV Golf London results, highlights: Charl Schwartzel pacing field after Friday's Round 2 image

The Centurion Golf Club continued to be difficult for golfers during Friday's Round 2 action at LIV Golf London. Only eight players closed the day under par after nine finished there after the first day of the event.

Though many players have had issues during the first two days of the tournament, the South African players continue to perform well. Two of them top the leaderboard with 2011 Masters winner Charl Schwartzel leading the field by a wide margin.

Schwartzel shot 5 under during the first day of the event and managed a 4 under on Friday to take a 9 under score into the weekend. That's good for a three-stroke lead on the second-place golfer Hennie Du Plessis, who is the only player challenging Schwartzel.

Beyond the two South Africans, only three other players are multiple strokes under par. They are Peter Uihlein (-4), Ollie Bekker (-3) and Scott Vincent (-2).

Lurking just beyond those competitors is Dustin Johnson. The top-ranked player on the LIV Golf tour got off to a rocky start and was shooting as high as 3 over during his round Friday. However, he worked his way back to even par Friday to give him a chance to compete for first should Schwartzel trip up on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Phil Mickelson struggled immensely on Friday. He shot 1 under par in the opening round but carded a 5 over on Friday and ranks tied for 26th among the 48-player field. Suffice to say that he is out of contention for the win this week.

The Sporting News tracked Round 2 of the LIV Golf London event. Below are the highlights from Friday's play as well as the results for Mickelson and Johnson.

LIV Golf London live updates, highlights from Friday's Round 2

(All times Eastern)

2:12 p.m. — Ratchanon Chantananuwat finishes the day with a par putt. That closes the second round of LIV Golf London with Schwartzel up three strokes.

2:09 p.m. — Du Plessis can't make his birdie putt but converts on an easy par to finish at 6 under par for the day. Schwartzel makes his to extend his lead to three strokes as he is 9 under par through two days. That will just about wrap up action from Round 2 of LIV Golf London.

2:07 p.m. — Both Schwartzel and Du Plessis hit excellent shots from off the green to give themselves a chance at birdie putts. The two South Africans are positioned to compete with one another for the tournament win on Saturday.

2:03 p.m. — Peter Uihlein finishes his day up with a birdie putt to drop him to 4 under par. He is currently four back of Schwartzel and alone in third place.

2:02 p.m. — Du Plessis may get bailed out a bit after his wayward second shot. There may be a temporary immovable object in his way, so he may get relief on his next shot.

1:59 p.m. — Hennie Du Plessis sends his second shot on the Par 5 even further left than that of Schwartzel. He will have trouble scrambling for par, so Schwartzel should have a chance to extend his two-stroke lead.

1:56 p.m. — Schwartzel hits his second shot on the Par 5 into a bunker near the green. He will have a chance to scramble for par to maintain a lead.

1:53 p.m. — Dustin Johnson can't quite finish up with a birdie putt. He ends up finishing even for the day to remain at 1 under par for the tournament,

1:35 p.m. — Louis Oosthuizen made a beautiful-looking putt to continue pushing the Stingers ahead in the team competition.

1:04 p.m. — Dustin Johnson couldn't make a short birdie putt to overtake Schwartzel on the leaderboard. "It just hit something and went right," Johnson said of the putt.

1:02 p.m. — Scott Vincent continues to move up and down the leaderboard, and he just double-bogeyed. He moves down and Ollie Bekker, who birdied after a double bogey, moves into fifth place.

12:56 p.m. — Dustin Johnson is heating up! He hit another shot very close to the flag and will have a chance to get to 3 under and avoid a tie with Peter Uihlein.

12:55 p.m. — Stinger GC continues to lead the team competition. They are at 11 under over the two days of action while the Crushers GB (6 under) is in second. The Majesticks (5 under) are also within striking distance.

12:53 p.m. — Peter Uihlein drops a shot and all of a sudden, Dustin Johnson is in a tie for third place.

12:48 p.m. — Schwartzel is able to make another birdie to get to 7 under for the tournament. Du Plessis is keeping some pressure on him, as he makes a birdie as well to stay two back of Schwartzel.

12:46 p.m. — Johnson was unable to sink a birdie putt to push him to 3 under. Still, he is trending in the right direction and is certainly in the contest with six holes to go on Day 2.

12:45 p.m. —  Neither Schwartzel nor Du Plessis can get long eagle putts to fall on a Par 5. Du Plessis had a 380-yard drive so his inability to take advantage of that could prove costly in his race to compete with Schwartzel.

12:32 p.m. — Mickelson's birdie attempt scrapes the hole but doesn't go down, continuing his frustrating day on the course.

12:31 p.m. — Johnson makes the eagle putt to drop to 2 under par. He is now in a tie for fourth and is four shots behind Charl Schwartzel.

12:25 p.m. — Dustin Johnson just had a nice landing on the green and will have a makeable eagle putt. He is at even par and could become the eighth player to sink under par with a strong shot on the green.

12:22 p.m. — Mickelson has a tough shot coming up from the rough and on a slope that will place him over the ball. Lefty us at 3 over for the tournament and is 10 strokes off the lead.

12:11 p.m. — It's a roller coaster for Schwartzel. He just shanked his tee shot and now will have to play it from very thick rough.

12:07 p.m. — Wow, Schwartzel makes another lengthy birdie putt. He is now 7 under par and has a four-strong lead on Du Plessis and Ulhlein.

12:03 p.m. — Mickelson was able to sink his birdie effort while Johnson did the same. Johnson is back down to even par and is tied for seventh place.

12:02 p.m. — Hennie Du Plessis nearly nailed a hole in one. He shot stopped just shy of the cup but will give him an easy tap-in birdie to put him back within two of Schwartzel.

12:01 p.m. — Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson both nearly made eagles but Johnson's tailed off to the side while Mickelson's skidded past the hole. They each have good birdie chances which will help to erase some of their struggles during Round 2o f the tournament.

11:55 a.m. — Schwartzel does, indeed, get his shot back. He sinks a simple birdie putt to work his way back to 6 under for the tournament. He is ahead of Du Plessis and Uihlein by three strokes.

11:54 a.m. — Ian Poulter and the Majesticks GC are making a run near the top of the team leaderboard. Sam Horsfield and Ian Poulter have them two strokes back of String GC, which has led for most of the tournament to date.

11:49 a.m. — Pablo Larrazabal has gotten to 1 under for the tournament. He is one of eight players under par right now and is having a very strong round.

11:47 a.m. — Charl Schwartzel brings his second shot within a few feet of the hole on a Par 4. That will give him a chance to make up his dropped strong on the ninth hole.

11:40 a.m. — We're roughly at the halfway point of today's action, as most players are through nine holes. Schwartzel continues to hold a two-stroke lead. It's getting windier on the course, too, so there is plenty of intrigue set to play out over the last couple hours of play.

11:36 a.m. — Speaking of Schwartzel, he dropped a shot on the ninth hole to drop to 5 under. He still has a two-stroke lead on Hennie Du Plessis, but the pressure is on for him to stay ahead.

11:35 a.m. — Ollie Becker is starting to work his way to the top of the leaderboard. Centurion Golf Club is his home course and he is now at 2 under par, three strokes behind the leader Schwartzel.

11:33 a.m. — Schwartzel was out of position on the difficult ninth hole and got onto the green in three. He'll have a difficult par putt upcoming to stay at 6 under for the tournament.

11:31 a.m. — Branden Grace moves back under par after a nice birdie putt. He is one of three South African golfers, and members of Stinger GC, that are in the top 8 and are under par.

11:25 a.m. — Mickelson saves par on the 11th. He makes a mid-length putt to do so.

11:24 a.m. — Phil Mickelson clangs one off the flag stick again after launching a ball into the woods on a Par 3. He continues to be a whiz with the iron, but he may have trouble making par on the 11th hole.

11:17 a.m. — Schwartzel very nearly sunk an incredible birdie putt around two sprinkler heads. It didn't quite have the right line but it was extremely close and set up an easy par save for him.

11:15 a.m. — Both Mickelson and Johnson miss their birdie attempts. Mickelson has four pars and four bogeys on the day so far, as he struggles to find consistent form.

11:13 a.m. — Horsfield sinks his bride putt to move to 2 under par. He's putting together one of the best rounds of anyone on the course and is just four shots off the lead. Charl Schwartzel just hit a ball to the back of the green, so Horsfield may gain a shot, as Schwartzel has a difficult two-putt upcoming.

11:10 a.m. — Mickelson, Johnson and Horsfield all land on the green in two shots at the 10th hole. The trio should each have a chance to make a birdie.

11:08 a.m. — Schwartzel got a nice bounce off the tee at the eighth hole. He was heading into the rough but his shot came back into the fairway.

11:06 a.m. — LIV Golf made an important announcement during its broadcast. Bryson DeChambeau is officially set to join LIV Golf. That means he will no longer be playing on the PGA Tour.

11:04 a.m. — Schwartzel makes another par. He is playing steadily and is maintaining a three-shot lead.

11:03 a.m. — Phil Mickelson misses another putt after curving it around the hole. He will drop another stroke on what is proving to be a difficult day for him. He is moving to the back nine now, where he played better on Thursday in Round 1.

10:59 a.m. — Dustin Johnson just missed making back-to-back birdies. Meanwhile, Sam Horsfield drops a stroke to get to 1 under par for the tournament. He is making a bit of a move and is just five shots off Charl Schwartzel's lead.

10:57 a.m. — Pablo Larrazabal sinks a putt to move to even par. He is tied for seventh place with other golfers including Sam Horsfield and Scott Vincent.

10:52 a.m. — Sam Horsfield makes a beautiful second shot from the fairway into the green on the Par 4 ninth hole. He landed close to the cup while Dustin Johnson also ran his ball onto the green. Phil Mickelson found the green too, but he is much further from the hole and will have to navigate a massive slope on his birdie attempt.

10:49 a.m. — Charl Schwartzel's lead continues to grow. He now leads Hennie Du Plessis by three strokes after Schwartzel made a nice par save with a mid-length putt and Du Plessis missed a short one to save par.

10:46 a.m. — Branden Grace and Peter Uihlein switch places on the leaderboard. Uihlein birdies to drop to 2 under par while Grace bogeys to move to 1 under. Uihlein is now tied for third while Grace is tied for fifth.

10:43 a.m. — Sam Horsfield makes a good-looking birdie putt on the eighth hole. Mickelson follows that up with a nice par save to keep him at 2 over. Horsfield is at even par.

10:40 a.m. — Mickelson's second shot out of the rough was near-perfect. It careened off the flag stick and bounced off the green. Still, he did well to get it up there and should be able to scramble for a par save.

10:36 a.m. — Charl Schwartzel hits another green in regulation. He will have a long birdie putt and with how he's putting, he could get it close to the hole.

10:34 a.m. — Mickelson's drive off the tee finds the rough. It looks like it took a deep dive, so he will need to get a good lie to save par.

10:29 a.m. — Dustin Johnson can't make his birdie effort. He should make par on the hole, but he is now eight shots off the lead. He'll need to make a move over the last 12 holes of today's action to put himself in contention.

10:28 a.m. — Charl Schwartzel is red hot. He makes another long birdie putt on a Par 3 to get to 6 under. He is now ahead of Hennie Du Plessis by two strokes while Ollie Bekker and Branden Grace lurk four strokes behind.

10:25 a.m. — Dustin Johnson, who is 3 over par on the day, just hit a nice second shot onto the green. He will have a birdie chance that could help him generate some positive momentum after a poor start.

10:18 a.m. — Phil Mickelson saves bogey after his wayward tee shot. He is now 1 over par for the tournament but is still certainly within striking distance of Schwartzel.

10:16 a.m. — Strike that — Charl Schwartzel just nailed a long birdie putt. That gives him a one-shot lead on Du Plessis at 5 under. There are just six total players under par right now.

10:15 a.m. — Phil Mickelson's fourth shot was a long putt from just off the green. He gets it close to the hole, but he can't sink it. He will drop at least a stroke.

10:14 a.m. — Hennie Du Plessis hit a nice third shot from off the green to set up a nice par putt. That should keep him tied for the lead with Charl Schwartzel.

10:08 a.m. — Uh oh. It appears that Phil Mickelson may have hit his ball out of bounds. That could put him in a bit of trouble.

10:07 a.m. — Sergio Garcia, who is at 1 over par, just hit a nice second shot on a Par 4. He could get back to even par and put himself right in the thick of contention on this moving day of sorts.

10:00 a.m. — Three South Africans are now officially leading the field. Schwartzel and Du Plessis are at 4 under each while Branden Grace is alone in third. All are members of Stingers GC.

9:56 a.m. — Meanwhile, Phil Mickelson had a nice pitch from the fringe and should be set up to make par on the fifth hole.

9:55 a.m. — Scott Vincent has run into trouble on his second hole of the day. He overshot the green, ended up with tree trouble and it came screaming through the green. It looks like he's on pace for a double bogey.

9:53 a.m. — Co-leader Hennie Du Plessis hits a beautiful second shot into the green on his hole. He will have a great look at birdie to take an outright lead over Charl Schwartzel.

9:52 a.m. — Mickelson's shot into the Par 3 was the worst of his group. He landed on the fringe of the green while both Johnson and Sam Horsfield landed in the middle of the green.

9:50 a.m. — Dustin Johnson lands on the green at the fifth hole, a 169-yard Par 3. He will have a lengthy birdie putt but should be set up for a par save.

9:47 a.m. — On the same hole, Dustin Johnson saves par on a seven-foot putt after landing in the tall grass. That's a good score for him on his second hole of the day.

9:45 a.m. — Phil Mickelson once again sends a putt around the hole, this one a par putt. He will tap it for bogey and move back to even par.

9:40 a.m. — Two South Africans — Charl Schwartzel and Louis Oosthuizen — came up just short of birdie putts but should have easy tap-ins for par. Another South African, Hennie Du Plesssis, was able to make his birdie putt and moved into a first-place tie with Schwartzel.

9:38 a.m. — Dustin Johnson's tough start continues. He hit his second shot from the tall, tall grass and it struck the green before rolling off. He can save par, but his driver woes are continuing.

9:36 a.m. — Ian Snyman hit one of the best shots of the day on his first hole. He grazed the flag stick and nearly holed out from a distance. He didn't, but it was still an excellent approach.

9:34 a.m. — Scott Vincent put his Par 3 tee right nearby the flag on his second hole. He will have a good look at birdie to make up for the bogey he had on his first hole of the day.

9:31 a.m. — Charl Schwartzel bogeys his first hole of the day as Centurion Golf Club continues to prove difficult for golfers. He was momentarily tied for the lead with Hennie Du Plessis, but his countryman also bogeyed his first hole. So, Schwartzel remains in the lead.

9:28 a.m. — Mickelson's birdie attempt skids past the hole on the left. He should tap in for par to kickstart his day.

9:25 a.m. — Dustin Johnson ran into some trouble on his first hole. It took him four shots to get to the green, so he will no longer be under par for the tournament.

9:23 a.m. — Scott Vincent drove his first shot just into the trees on the left of the fairway. He had an angle to get the ball to get to the green, but he landed it in the bunker. He will have a chance to scramble for par from there.

9:22 a.m. — Phil Mickelson's group started on the third hole. He had a nice drive into the fairway and then landed his second shot on the green. He'll have a shot at a birdie.

9:21 a.m. — Hennie Du Plessis hit his first shot of the day on the 492-yard Par 4 into the trees. He had to just punch it out and back into the fairway, setting up an important third shot into the green.

9:19 a.m. — Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson are once again in a group together along with Scott Vincent, who shot 3 under par in Round 1. All are within four shots of Charl Schwartzel's lead.

9:14 a.m. — The shotgun start has been signaled. That means that Round 2 of LIV Golf London is officially underway!

9:12 a.m. — Just 10 players shot under par during the first round. We'll soon see if the golfers can improve upon their performance on their second day at Centurion Golf Club.

9:08 a.m. — Stinger GC is leading the team competition going into Round 2. They carded a 9 under par score in Round 1, thanks to Charl Schwartzel's 5 under par and Hennie Du Plessis' 4 under. They have a six-stroke lead on Crushers GC and Hy Flyers GC, the two second-place teams.

8:54 a.m. — LIV Golf is getting ready to begin the second day of its inaugural tournament. Once again, all players will start on the course shortly after 9 a.m. ET. Charl Schwartzel currently is the leader at 5 under par while Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson are each at 1 under par.
