LIV Golf Bedminster results, highlights: Henrik Stenson in lead heading into final round image

Henrik Stenson and Patrick Reed started the second round of the LIV Golf Bedminster event tied atop the leaderboard.

That was about the only commonality between the two on Saturday.

Stenson overcame a rough early start — including a double bogey on his third hole — to shoot 2 under for the round. With that, he took the outright lead at 9 under heading into the third and final round Sunday.

Stenson was able to right the ship on the par-5 eighth hole, where he notched an eagle to move one stroke behind Reed for the lead. He then carded four birdies — plus two bogeys — in his final nine holes to take a commanding lead into Sunday's play.

Reed carded a 2-over 73, ending his day tied for third with Carlos Ortiz and Talor Gooch at 5 under. Reed played his front nine in even par before a devastating series in which he bogeyed Holes 10, 11 and 12. An eagle on the par-5 15th mitigated some of the damage, but Reed added one last bogey on 17.

Meanwhile, Dustin Johnson quietly positioned himself to challenge Stenson on Sunday. He shot a 2-under 69 that put him in sole possession of second place at 6 under.

Teamwise, 4 Aces — Johnson, captain Reed, Pat Perez and Talor Gooch — extended its lead to six strokes over Majesticks GC (Stenson, captain Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter and Sam Horsfield). 4 Aces heads to the third round at 20 under par.

LIV Golf Bedminster updates, highlights from Saturday's Round 2

All teams Eastern.

6:17 p.m.: Not a bad look, all told, but the ball stops about a foot away from. Stenson will lose a stroke and take a three-stroke lead into the third round.

6:15 p.m.: Stenson looks to have chipped a line drive left of the pin to have the slope help him . . . but he didn't put enough on it. He has to putt from just off the green to salvage par.

6:11 p.m.: Stenson takes the safe route with his third shot on the par-5 hole. He's on the fairway and now has an outside shot at birdie from this distance. More likely he gets the ball onto the green on the approach and hopes it's a makeable distance to salvage par.

6:06 p.m.: Stenson's in an interesting position. He's in the rough to the right of the fairway and just short of the lake, which separates him from the green. He may be tempted to overshoot the water but, considering he has a four-stroke lead over Johnson, may decide to play it safe and take the long way around.

5:58 p.m.: Reed (5 under) does indeed salvage a bogey. Stenson, meanwhile, centers his birdie attempt. He's at 10 under.

5:56 p.m.: Johnson birdies 18 to move to 6 under.

5:54 p.m.: Reed overshoots his par attempt and has 6 feet to save bogey.

5:52 p.m.: Reed, meanwhile, shoots his third shot from the thick stuff behind the green. He hated it, and with good reason: It caught the slope of the green and rolled to the right for a 10- to 12-foot look to save par, from the second cut.

5:50 p.m.: Stenson's approach on his penultimate hole leaves him within 4-5 feet for yet another birdie. He'd love to have that, no doubt.

5:38 p.m.: Too much break on Reed's attempt. He now falls three back of Stenson with two holes to play.

5:38 p.m.: No problem whatsoever for Stenson, whose putt looked true as soon as he hit it.

5:32 p.m.: Stenson and Reed both are in play for a birdie on the par-3 16th, though Reed is probably a foot or two closer.

5:26 p.m.: Guess who's back in second place: Reed eagles the par-5 15th, the first such result of the round that wasn't on Hole 8. That moves him to 6 under, two shots behind Stenson.

5:22 p.m.: Stenson's lead is back to three after Johnson misses a makeable par putt. The former chunks it out of the sand and takes it the length of the green, all the way into the second cut. He'll have that for birdie.

5:20 p.m.: Phil Mickelson gets a nice birdie to move to 5 over for the tournament. It was a largely insignificant shot that regardless got a huge reaction from the crowd.

5:19 p.m.: Gooch was 2 over at the end of Round 1. He's 6 under in Round 2 and right in the thick of it after this birdie:

5:17 p.m.: Stenson's drive on 15 is undone by his approach, which finds the bunker. Still in play for an up-and-down birdie.

5:16 p.m.: Pettit with a birdie to move to 5 under for the tourney, good for tied for third.

5:13 p.m.: And just like that, Stenson responds with a boomer down the center of the fairway on 15th, a par-5 hole. Great opportunity for him to get that bogey — or more — back.

5:10 p.m.: Stenson just carded his first bogey on the "back nine" on the par-3 14th. That makes things a little more interesting but he still holds a two-stroke lead over Johnson.

5:07 p.m.: Johnson finally heading in the right direction with a had-to-have-it birdie on the par-5 15th. He's three shots off Stenson with five left to play.

4:59 p.m.: Stenson's on one now. He birdies his second straight hole on the 11th to take a four-stroke lead over the rest of the field. And remember, he has a double bogey on the day as well.

4:42 p.m.: Goodness gracious, that's a third straight bogey for Reed, who began the day tied for the lead at 7 under. He's now 4 under with six holes left to play.

4:38 p.m: Birdie on 13 for Ortiz to move to 4 under for the day.

4:36 p.m.: Johnson manages to salvage par, remaining at 5 under within three strokes of Stenson.

4:30 p.m.: A lot of flirtations with holes in one today, this one on the par-3 16th from Kevin Na:

4:25 p.m.: At nearly the same moment, Khongwatmai birdies on Hole 11 to move into sole possession of second place.

4:23 p.m.: Reed will bogey a second straight hole after failing to salvage par on the par-4 12th hole. He'll have a two-putt for bogey to fall to 5 under.

4:10 p.m.: Brooks Koepka, now tied for 15th, misses a par save on the par-4 ninth. His ball lips out of the hole in a near U-turn.

4 p.m.: Charl Schwartzel's short game lets him down on the back nine, as he hooks a putt left that would have moved him up the leaderboard. He'll once again have to settle for par.

3:50 p.m.: After a lot of hemming and hawing, Henrik Stenson finally hits a putt for par to stay atop the leaderboard.

3:42 p.m.: Brooks Koepka hits a nice shot to save par and stay in the top 10 on the leaderboard.

3:39 p.m.: Ian Poulter hooks a putt for birdie left of hole, keeping him at 3 under for the tournament.

3:31 p.m.: Strike that. Stenson gets an eagle on the eighth to move into a tie for first at 7 under. Reed's birdie attempt still pending.

3:30 p.m.: Another nice shot by Reed, who takes the wedge to get out of the sand on the eighth hole. He's looking at 5 feet for another birdie to move him three shots ahead of Johnson and Stenson.

3:16 p.m.: Reed with a 10-foot birdie on Hole 7 to get back to 7 under, two strokes clear of Johnson and Stenson, both at 5 under.

3:09 p.m.: Stenson's tee on the par-3 fourth lands rolls off the green into the second cut, on the slope just feet away from the water. Near disaster there.

3:05 p.m.: Johnson misses a makeable birdie putt on the eighth and will remain in a tie for second at 5 under.

2:56 p.m.: Johnson finds the bunker on the par-5 eighth. He'll look to birdie here to get back into a tie for first with Reed.

2:40 p.m.: Meanwhile, 4 Aces has the outright lead at 15 under, two shots ahead of Majesticks GC (-13), with 13 holes left to play.

2:34 p.m.: Johnson moves into a share of the lead with teammate Reed after a birdie on Hole 6.

2:31 p.m.: Westwood with the second near-hole in one on the par-3 fourth. He'll have a foot for birdie.

2:29 p.m.: Reed somehow missed a footlong par attempt on the par-3 fourth hole and is forced to two-putt for bogey. He's still in the lead at 6 under.

2:26 p.m.: Chase Koepka's birdie attempt flirts with the rim but doesn't land. Rough.

2:18 p.m.: Stenson does end up teeing off again, by the way. He shoots a double bogey on the par-4 third hole to fall back to 5 under for the tournament. He, Johnson and Khongwatmai are in a three-way tie for second.

2:09 p.m.: Lots of second-cut birdies today, this one from Lee Westwood:

2:05 p.m.: Stenson's discussing with an official whether he can get relief after his ball falls off the track into some thick stuff. Looks like he might do a re-play.

1:55 p.m.: And there's Dustin Johnson's first birdie of the day on the par-3 fourth hole. A nice left-to-right putt from 10 feet centers the hole and puts him at 5 under, two shots off the lead.

1:54 p.m.: Paul Casey (+1) and Kevin Na (-1) both with a couple of nice 15-foot birdies in the second round.

1:44 p.m.: Sam Horsfield with an impressive chip-in to salvage par:

1:34 p.m.: Reed does salvage par, but again hits the thick stuff off his drive on Hole 2. Just missed the second cut.

1:26 p.m.: Lovely birdie from Sam Horsfield:

1:22 p.m.: Reed's approach on Hole 1 is out of the thick stuff. Not an elegant approach but he has a shot at an up-and-down par from the second cut.

1:19 p.m.: Matthew Wolff with the first highlight-worthy shot of the day, nearly getting a hole in one on the par-3 fourth hole. He'll tap it in from an inch to move to 2 under for the tournament.

1:15 p.m.: The crowd counts down to the start of the second round. And we're off from Bedminster.
