The 2022-23 PGA Tour regular season is coming to a close at the Wyndham Championship this week, but the FedEx Cup standings are far from settled.

While there are plenty of golfers who have clinched passage to the 70-player postseason field, many are still jockeying for position on the FedEx Cup leaderboard. That includes some of the top players in the sport, such as Justin Thomas and Shane Lowry.

It won't necessarily be easy for these players to work their way into the condensed playoff field. That said, many in the field will at least have a slim chance to crack the top 70 and play at the St. Jude Championship.

Who is on the outside of the FedEx Cup bubble, and how can they get into the playoff picture? Here's what to know about the FedEx Cup standings as the PGA Tour's regular season winds down:

Below is a look at the top 70 players in the FedEx Cup standings entering the Wyndham Championship.

The rankings will change throughout the final event of golf's regular season, but if the season were to end today, these are the 70 golfers who would get a chance to play at the FedEx St. Jude Championship.

Below is a look at the rest of the top 125 in the standings ahead of the Wyndham Championship.

While those golfers are behind the 8-ball a bit, they still can climb into the top 70. A win at the Wyndham Championship would be worth 500 points in the FedEx Cup standings, so players are able to rapidly rise if they put together one strong week.

The playoff hopefuls need only look to last week's 3M Open winner, Lee Hodges, as an example of that: He was 74th in the FedEx Cup standings before moving up to 33rd overall after winning the tournament.

How Justin Thomas, Shane Lowry & more can make FedEx Cup playoffs

Plenty of recognizable golfers are fighting for their playoff lives at the 2023 Wyndham Championship. Below is a look at what some of them need to achieve at the tournament in order to qualify for postseason play.

Justin Thomas

  • Rank: T-78
  • Points: 546
  • Points back: 48

Thomas will need to regain his form at the Wyndham Championship after a rough stretch that has seen him miss the cut at five of his last seven events.

The 30-year-old needs to finish 18th or better to close the points gap between him and the 70th-ranked player in the FedEx Cup standings. He more than likely will need to finish higher than that, as some of the players in front of him will inevitably gain points as a result of the event.

That won't be easy given his performance this season.

Thomas won the FedEx Cup in 2017 and has two major titles to his name — the 2017 and 2022 PGA Championships — but his 2022-23 campaign has been forgettable. Thomas has logged just four top-10 finishes and has failed to finish better than fourth in any event. He also made the cut at just one major, the PGA Championship, in which he finished tied for 65th.

There's no doubt Thomas, the No. 26 golfer in the world according to the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR), can put together a top-15 showing when he's at his best. But with how he's currently playing, it's hard to trust him to do what is necessary to make it to Memphis next week.

Shane Lowry

  • Rank: 76
  • Points: 556
  • Points back: 38

Lowry actually ranks slightly ahead of Thomas in the playoff standings, so he won't need to finish quite as strong as his fellow major winner. Still, the Irishman will at least need to finish 23rd or better to get the requisite 39 points needed to make the leap up to 70th, so he should be aiming for a top-20 finish at a minimum.

Lowry's 2022-23 season hasn't been as strong as his previous campaign, but he has only missed three cuts on the PGA Tour and has nine top-20 finishes to his name. That said, he only has one top-10 finish, and that came at The Honda Classic back in February. So, to comfortably get into the field, he will need to log his best performance of the season to date.

Adam Scott

  • Rank: 81
  • Points: 517
  • Points back: 77

Scott is another former major winner, but the Australian will need some help getting into golf's postseason. He is 77 points back of Austin Eckroat in the No. 70 slot, so Scott will need to at least log a top-nine finish to have a shot at sneaking into the end of the top 70.

The 43-year-old has posted a similar season to Lowry, missing just two cuts and posting three top-10 finishes. His issue? He has played just 15 PGA Tour events and finished no better than tied for 29th at any major. Those tournaments are worth more than the average PGA Tour event, so that's part of why he is lagging behind in this area.

Gary Woodland

  • Rank: 97
  • Points: 436
  • Points back: 158

Woodland's chances of making the FedEx Cup playoffs are admittedly slim — but not zero. The 2019 U.S. Open winner can erase his 158-point deficit with a top-three finish, but the only way he can guarantee passage into the playoffs is with a win.

Woodland has missed just five cuts during the 2022-23 season but he has only logged two top-10 finishes and four top-20s overall. He needed a good finish at the 3M Open to bolster his chances of making the postseason, but he shot 3 over to miss the cut. That could have him looking ahead to the 2023-24 season as a result.

Billy Horschel

  • Rank: 116
  • Points: 350
  • Points back: 244

Horschel is the 2014 FedEx Cup champion but if he wants to win the tournament in 2023, he has a lot of work to do. He must finish top two at the Wyndham Championship to have any chance of further fighting for a trip to East Lake.

Horschel hasn't come close to a top-two finish this season. His best finish was a tie for seventh at the CJ Cup in October but, since then, he hasn't cracked the top 10. He also hasn't made consecutive cuts since making four straight to start the season, so it looks like Horschel's 2022-23 campaign will come to a disappointing conclusion barring a season-best performance.
