Cameron Smith has the potential to add a significant amount of prize money to his already lucrative golf career this week at the Masters.

Smith, one of the golfers who defected from the PGA Tour to the controversial LIV Golf Series last season, will doubtless look to earn a second major victory after finishing tied for second at Augusta National in 2020. He won the Open Championship in 2022 just before leaving for LIV Golf.

The defections by PGA Tour pros to LIV Golf have resulted in bolstered purses for the PGA Tour's top events, the Masters included. The winner of this year's tournament stands to make $2.7 million of the $15 million purse, which tops golf's four majors.

In that sense, the exodus of PGA Tour players to LIV Golf has been lucrative for golfers on both sides. And, judging by the money Smith has already made in just over a season in the new Saudi-backed league, it's hard to argue it wasn't a smart financial decision by him.
