Wrexham made a return to forget to the EFL's League Two on Saturday when the non-league champions were beaten 5-3 at home by MK Dons in their first game since winning promotion.

Phil Parkinson's side return to the Racecourse Ground on Tuesday to face former Premier League side Wigan in the first round of the Carabao Cup.

The hosts are back in the competition following a 16-year absence due to their relegation from the English Football League (EFL) to non-league football at the end of the 2007/08 season.

Paul Mullin, who scored 47 goals for Wrexham last season, is out with a punctured lung he suffered in their preseason friendly against Manchester United in the USA.

Wigan manager Shaun Maloney, who scored twice against Wrexham in a 5-0 win for Aston Villa in the Dragons' last Carabao Cup appearance, has hinted that two of his loan signings could feature.

Kell Watts, who is on loan from Newcastle, makes his first start for the club. He came on as a substitute against Derby County in their season opener.

Striker Josh Magennis damaged knee ligaments in April and is not expected to return before September, while defender Jason Kerr will have been out for a year with a knee injury by the time of his anticipated comeback in November.

Wrexham vs Wigan betting odds

Relegated from the second-tier Championship last season, Wigan's League One status means they are a division above Wrexham, so they should provide another step up in quality following that baptism of fire for the League Two newcomers on Saturday.

Wigan started the season with an eight-point deduction due to a league penalty relating to financial issues. Maloney has said their focus is on reaching a positive points balance as quickly as possible and avoiding relegation, so there is a question mark around how strong a side they will put out for this game, and the bookmakers have them as clear underdogs.

Wrexham, too, may not place excessive importance on England's secondary cup competition ahead of three league matches in seven days starting with their trip to AFC Wimbledon on Saturday. A first win of the season would, however, be an ideal way to ease the pain of their comprehensive opening defeat.
