Argentina aim to continue their perfect record in the early stages of CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying when they travel to face Peru on Tuesday.

Defender Nicolas Otamendi scored the only goal in a largely forgettable encounter with Paraguay, making it three wins from three on the road to the 2026 World Cup for the defending champions.

By contrast, Peru are winless across their opening games, with back-to-back defeats to Chile and Brazil following an initial goalless draw versus Paraguay.

A repeat of their fairytale run to the 2018 World Cup is already starting to look like a fading dream for Juan Reynoso's side.

Peru vs Argentina lineups, team news

Despite being 39 years of age, Peru's record goalscorer Paolo Guerrero is ready to lead the line. He could be supported by Al Qadsiah forward Andre Carrillo.

Peru projected lineup (4-3-2-1, right to left): Gallese (GK) — Corzo, Zambrano, Abram, Trauco — Aquino, Yotun — Advincula, Carrillo, Polo — Guerrero

Lionel Messi appeared as a second-half substitute against Paraguay as Lionel Scaloni exercised caution over his star man's leg knock. If he returns to the starting lineup, Nicolas Gonzalez is most likely to make way. That will mean a formidable front three of Messi, Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez.

Argentina projected lineup (4-3-1-2, right to left): E Martinez (GK) — Molina, Romero, Otamendi, Tagliafico — De Paul, Fernandez, Mac Allister — Messi —  L Martinez, Alvarez

Peru vs Argentina prediction, odds

Argentina have shown no signs of complacency after their World Cup triumph. Qatar might have been the end of a career-long quest for Messi but in many respects this feels like the start of a cycle for the nucleus of a fine team.

They are yet to concede in qualification and Emiliano Martinez will expect to continue his run of clean sheets against a team that have yet to register a goal in their campaign to date. Before you even consider Messi's additional stardust at the other end of the pitch, this feels like an incredibly tall order for Peru.

Prediction: Peru 0-2 Argentina
